September 16th World Ozone Day.

Today is World Ozone Day,

a gas present in the upper atmosphere,

it protects us all from ultra violet rays,

whose effects can be quite severe.

Excessive use of chlorofluorocarbons,

has caused damage to our ozone layer,

but by cutting down on these,

it has started to self repair.

The ozone layer absorbs 97-99% of high frequency ultra violet light from the sun which can be harmful to mankind and the environment. Over use of chlorofluorocarbons led to a hole in the ozone layer extending over 29 million square kilometres over Antarctica, it will not fully recoùiver until 2060 - 2075. If mankind had not stopped the use of CFC gases then large parts of Earth would be uninhabitable by 2065, UV radiation could have risen by 65% enough to cause sunburn in 5 minutes. It was on December 19th 1944 that the UN Generan Assembley proclaimed  September 16th to be the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
