October 20th World Osteoporosis Day.

Today it's osteoporosis day,

a condition where bones are weak,

those with it exercise daily

to support a frailer physique.


This condition can strike at any age,

it mainly affects women but men have it too,

in some cases it can lead to loss of mobility,

because fracturing a bone is easy to do.


Osteoporosis is sometimes called the silent thief because bone loss occurs without symptoms until there is a fracture. Bones are at their thickest and strongest in early adult life,you slowly start to lose bone density from about 35 years of age, this is a general rule, but some develop osteoporosis and lose bone density much quicker, increasing the risk of a fracture. There are certain medications that can be taken to slow down the rate at which the bone is broken down in the body, thus reducing he risk of fractures. Usually they are from a group of medicines called Bisphosphonates, this is taken once a week, also calcium and vitamin D supplements are taken daily. There are ceetain foods that are high in calcium that can be beneficial to eat, these include yogurt, hard cheese, milk, broccoli, canned sardines, figs and almonds.
