though doesn't give some as much pleasure.

Robert Cawdrey's Table Alphabeticall published in 1604 was the first single language English dictionary published. It lists approximately 3,000 words giving each a simple description. Cawdrey thought his book might help people understand the English language better. Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1775, it took eight years to compile and listed 40,000 words, also there were 114,000 quotations in it.
