Chapter 8
I pulled my head out of the water, gasping.
"86 seconds. Not bad!", Kara said impressed. "Now we have to see how long you can stay underwater while moving. Up until now, you've just been hanging in there motionless."
"Let me catch some breath first, please.", I panted.
"Of course. I'll go get something for you to fish out of the lake.", she answered and got out of the water. I closed my eyes and stayed like this until... I heard a little splash, followed by a louder one as Kara jumped back in. I opened my eyes.
"So, my bracelet is in there somewhere now. You know, the green one. Seek for it." My jaw dropped.
"Without knowing where it is?"
"I thought this was the point of seeking something?" She smirked. Kara, stop getting those wrinkles around your eyes, that's gonna kill me.
"Okay..." I took a deep breath and dove. Deeper. Further. It's not here... There maybe? No. What about that pla- Nope. Did she throw it over there? Can't find it.... My lungs started stinging. I can't give up... No, I have to find it... I couldn't stay underwater anymore. My head burst through the surface and I took a deep breath.
"Did you find it?", Kara asked after a few seconds. Still out of breath, I shook my head. "Hm. Well, you were pretty close.", she said and came over to me to dive down about a metre away from me. When she got back up, she was holding the bracelet. This was when I noticed something.
"Isn't this made out of leather?", I asked sceptically. Kara shook her head.
"Nope. Fake leather. But it looks pretty real, doesn't it?" I nodded.
"Well, we've been practicing enough for today. Let's go back home.", she added. Tired, I nodded. We got out of the water, and took grabbed our clothes and crawled out of the cave. Funny, I thought, it's easier to leave the cave than getting in it. No idea why. We sat in the sun, drying ourselves and watching birds flying close by.
"Did you notice there were intruders in our camp last night?", Kara suddenly asked.
"No. Really?", I answered surprised.
"Yes. But they ran away when they saw me with my knife."
"Oh. Well, what were they doing?"
"I think they were just walking through the forest. They didn't kill anyone."
"Alright. That's good."
We sat there in silence for a while.
"...Kara?"
"Yes?", she responded.
"If you had the chance to go somewhere - anywhere, without polluting anything, and this place would stay safe for as long as you're gone - where would that be?" Kara didn't think long.
"Brazil, I guess. It's beautiful there."
"You've been there before?", I asked.
"I lived there. I was born there."
"Oh, wow! I wish I was born in a country like Brazil! But I wasn't, I was born right where I lived until a few months ago."
"How about you?", Kara asked.
"Huh?"
"Where would you go if you had the chance?"
"Home." I swallowed. Should I say it? "But it isn't... home... The fire.." I stumbled.
"Fire?" Kara looked at me, puzzled.
"Nothing. Forget it." I interrupted her angrily. But probably rather angry to myself.
It wasn't nothing. It was a lot. And I had been such a coward.
