Chapter 6
"What the—" Kara ran outside. I quickly got up and followed her. What the heck was that?! What's happening??
"Kara!", I shouted. "Wait! It might be a trap!"
"Trap or not, I can't let them kill my friends!"
Fuck. I ran even faster to catch up with her.
"But Kara..."
"No!"
We kept on running until we got to a clearing where— I pulled Kara behind a tree even though she tried to get to him.
The man kneeling in front of a dead rabbit.
"Let me go!", she whispered. I shook my head.
"He's gonna kill you."
"He is not going to eat Sarah's dead body!" She broke away from me.
The next few seconds passed as if in slow-motion.
Kara ran over to the man, pushed him away from Sarah. He was too surprised to react fast enough and just sat there, his mouth and eyes open wide. Kara grabbed Sarah's body, took out her knife and...
...slit the man's leg!
The next thing I remember was us sitting in front of Kara's tent. Tears were running down her face as she gently laid down Sarah's body. Started digging a hole with her hands. I tried to help, but she just shook her head.
"Let me do this." Her voice sounded strange. It was the first time she ever seemed weak and small to me. When Kara had finished digging the hole, she put Sarah into it and sobbed.
"Hey... Kara..." I wanted to say something to comfort her, but I didn't know what to say.
"She..." Kara's voice broke. "Sarah was such a wonderful rabbit. She even had a girlfriend, Coralee. I loved them both. I- I just don't know what we're going to do without her, you know? And I also feel so bad for Coralee... She already lost her boyfriend to a fox, but later, she found Sarah. They were so happy together and even though she knew nothing in this world could replace Micheal she had Sarah now and, well, she was the second love of her life. And now..." She sobbed even harder. I put my arm around her shoulders.
"That sounds horrible. But, you know, you always have to remember that both Sarah and Michael had wonderful lives. I once heard that the most beautiful thing somebody can leave for others is a smile on the faces of the ones that remember them." Kara nodded and sniffed.
"You... You're right. Maybe I should feel this way about it." She smiled a little. "We had great times together." She closed the little grave by putting dirt into it, stood up and went into the tent. When she came back, she had an even, green stone in her hand.
"Sarah loved this stone.", Kara said and put it onto the grave. "We will always remember you, Sarah." She sat down, closed her eyes and smiled even though she was still crying.
