Rush:
"What's the holdup, Rush? Are you done yet?"
"You still doubt me, Blackheart? I am very good at my job, you know", he answered back, thinking of all the ways he could kill his mentor. Unfortunately, he would never get away with it.
"Yeah, but you're known for your speed. Why is the target still showing signs of life?"
"I'm taking my time, you know. I don't want to be seen when I slit her throat. She's a political figure for crying out loud...I still have no idea why my father wants her killed." he retorted.
Blackheart spied the kid on his binoculars and very carefully set his prodigy straight.
"Rush, you know, as an assassin, we don't ask why the target needs to be killed. We just do it. It's like I learned in the Army-'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'. "
Immediately, Rush replied, "I know people who would kill you for saying that."
Blackheart retorted, "That happens in my line of work. I get used to it."
Rush shrugged and started stalking the poor lady in her apartment. Currently, she was just watching television, but his father wanted a big statement for her death. Usually, he was more inclined for the quiet deaths, but he wanted a straight reference from Psycho. It was a movie he'd seen before when he was...The Masked Death. He pushed those memories down and focused on the mission at hand.
He thought to himself, you know what, **** my father, I am killing her quietly and as she watched TV-a soap opera, he believed, he slowly walked into her living room and using his super speed, ran up to her behind the couch and jammed a needle into her arm with enough drugs to kill a dying moose. In the morning, she would be declared dead of an overdose. It was fitting as she already had a stash of prescription medications that were expired stashed in her cupboard and her latest bout of politics was over defending pharmaceuticals.
He felt bad for her, a recent divorcee who got cheated on by her husband with a younger girl. That had to hurt, and could explain why there was a lot of drugs she was currently using. He wished he could judge her, but he knew how it felt like when your life seemed to spiral out of control.
He cleaned up the scene, leaving no fingerprints, and left via the window, only to climb up the fire escape to the roof where Blackheart stood waiting.
"You botched the mission up", Blackheart said it matter-of-factually as if he was there himself.
"No, I didn't. The lady's dead. I did what was asked.", he argued back.
"If I wasn't your mentor, I would leave you to face trial for what you did." Rush's face grew inflamed with anger as his mentor continued, "As it is, you have potential as an assassin, however, you like disobeying authority and playing with fire. That will come back to bite you one day on the butt. And most importantly, whether you like it or not, your uncle, the Evil Hand, assigned me personally to take care of and babysit your ***. So start growing up now."
"You're not my uncle", he yelled at the top of his lungs, without caring if he was heard in this city or not. The skyline was extremely dark at this time of night and ambulances' sirens were the only sound heard for miles.
"Yeah, well I am the guy who happens to be in charge of all the assassins at the Ambassadors of Evil. One false step and I'll send you back to assassin school to relearn all the basics." Blackheart threatened Rush and sent him a scowl that even reached his eyes.
Rush relented and let logic dominate his speech, as in he kept his mouth shut. He knew what was good for him; he had no idea why he decided to pick a fight with him of all people. Maybe it was because for a long time, he was so angry at his brother that he wanted to take it out on the whole world. That could explain why, he thought to himself.
However, that did not explain why he disobeyed his father's direct orders to kill that lady in the way he was supposed to do. It had to be the fact that lady had the same name as his former grandmother...she was dead now. Unfortunately, it was all his fault and he still regretted it.
Rush huffed and let his mentor give him rigging as both of them sailed off into the night like masked vigilantes in New York.
After they settled in a clearing in Central Park, Blackheart mistook silence as a welcome opportunity to teach. "Boy", he started and Rush looked at him with a mixture of appreciation and disgust. "I was really messed up for a long time and for me, killing is a way to let all the energy off, you know?"
Rush interrupted the touching speech by responding, "I know you were not always super-powered. You were given the powers in an explosion, right?"
Blackheart's mood immediately soured. "Look, that's a story for another day, kid."
Knowing Blackheart wouldn't answer intrigued him so he opened his ears and listened to his next question.
"Why didn't you do what you were supposed to do with that lady?"
The answer lay in the back of his mind and for a while, he did not reply.
Finally, he spoke to Blackheart.
"Her name was Laura Palmer."
