Chapter 14
A few minutes they pulled up to a house. A huge house. A mansion.
"You didn't tell me you lived in a castle!" Izuku exclaimed, placing his hands against the window of Hitoshi's car as he tried to take in every aspect of the building.
'Doesn't remind him of a puppy my ass.' Hitoshi thought to himself. Izuku was so easily excitable, overly enthusiastic, and clueless, that Hitoshi had no idea how anyone didn't look at him and see a small puppy.
"It's not a castle, and it's not like a live here alone remember." Hitoshi pointed out, parking his car and get out. He walked to the other side and found Izuku had already gotten out and was bouncing on the balls of his feet.
"I get a tour right?" He asked excitedly.
"No nerd, you get stuck only seeing a fraction of the house." Bakugou said sarcastically, walking up to them. He had arrived only seconds before them in his own car.
"What? That's not fair!" Izuku whined, grabbing Hitoshi's hand to complain. "Tell him that isn't fair." He said.
"Puppy, he's being sarcastic. Of course you get a tour, you are going to be working here tomorrow." Hitoshi, gently, reminded him.
Recognition crossed Izuku's features. "Oh yeah, I kind of forgot about that." He said sheepishly.
Bakugou grimaced, still pissed that Izuku had been dragged into the mafia. "Whatever, let's just get him check out, yeah?" He said, turning and heading for the front door of the house.
Izuku's eyes lit up at the thought of going in the mansion. "Wait for me Kacchan!" He called, bounding up behind his friend. There was still a dull ache through out his body, so he decided to ask Bakugou for a favor.
"Hey Kacchan?" He asked him sweetly.
"What'd you want Deku?" He asked suspiciously, but already having an idea of what he wanted.
"Can I have a piggy back ride? Please? Everything hurts." Izuku said with a pout and wide eyes.
With a huff, Bakugou turned his back to him and bent down to Izuku's level. The green haired boy cheered as he jumped on his back.
Hitoshi caught up to them, sending a look to Izuku that clearly showed his annoyance.
"Oh I'm sorry, did you want to give me a piggy back ride?" Izuku asked him, thinking he had let Hitoshi dodge a bullet.
"I'd rather you be clinging to me than him." Hitoshi said simply, catching Izuku off guard.
He turned a dark shade of red, "Well I guess-"
"Don't even think about it nerd." Bakugou growled. He was getting annoyed with the fact Hitoshi seemed to always be butting into anytime he got with Izuku. He hadn't seen the other male for years, and he couldn't even give them a little bit of space?
Izuku was torn. He didn't want to betray his childhood friend like that, but he could clearly see how it was making Hitoshi feel. He actually looked... insecure. Hitoshi Shinsou was known to Izuku by many things, not all of them pleasant, but none of them being insecure.
Hitoshi was slightly behind Bakugou, so the blond didn't have a clue to the glances he was sharing with Izuku. A look that showed hurt, but also understanding. They were friends that were ripped away from each other, he didn't have a right to step on that.
He didn't have a right regardless.
He technically held no claim to Izuku. Who's hoodies he had and who he clung to wasn't up to him. Not yet at least.
They all walked through the front door and Hitoshi started to head in a different direction than Bakugou. "Take him to see Tsuyu, I have shit to take care of." He said shortly. It was true, he hadn't been 'home' all weekend and he probably had a small mound of paperwork on his desk. That's why he left.
It wasn't because he was hurt. It wasn't because he was being stupid. It wasn't because some random barista had managed to get himself hurt and nearly given Hitoshi a heart attack in the process. That wasn't it. It couldn't be it.
All of those things would involve emotions.
Hitoshi didn't have those. He couldn't, not with his line of work.
Emotions made you weak and when you're weak, someone gets hurt.
Izuku watched Hitoshi's figure disappear down a long hallway with a frown on his face. He hated doctors and it stung that Hitoshi had just left him like that, especially since he was the one who had insisted in the first place.
"Don't mind him, he gets.... bored, easily." Bakugou said, knowing exactly what was going through his childhood friend's head at that moment.
"Bored?" Izuku asked, confusion lacing his voice.
Bakugou tried to think of the best way to explain it. He knew that what he was going to say would hurt Izuku, and it wasn't something he wanted to do. "He gets bored... of people, I guess? I don't know. The prick is heartless. When he finds someone interesting, it can only last so long before the novelty wares off. I mean, usually he gets bored of the guys he keeps in the cells and it's a... different kind of bored, but it could be applied anywhere really. Probably. Just don't take it personal, okay? He's not worth it." He said. He wasn't stupid, he knew he did a shit job at softening the blow, but he couldn't take it back now. He had committed at that point.
Izuku's stomach dropped. 'Until the novelty wares off.' He knew he wasn't special, but that didn't mean that Hitoshi hadn't somehow made him... feel special. At least for a little while.
"Y-yeah, okay." He said softly, clinging tighter to his friend's back.
He was mentally beating himself up for being such a dick. Why couldn't he just explain it better? Lighter? Or just stayed quiet? He knew he couldn't have stayed quiet. He knew Hitoshi and he didn't want Izuku to get attached just to end up like everyone else who had ever cared of The Devil. It wasn't a pretty ending.
He was still helping Todoroki deal with the aftermath.
