New Birds
High upon a post
the cabinet swayed
Lights dim,
Faces did fade
Strapping in
to the lift, I prepared
to fix the lamps
and any wires there
Opening the ends
I pulled panels back
then I nearly had
a heart-attack
Somehow a nest
Built inside
Baby birds
There they hide
Wires damaged
Bulbs burnt out
They caused it all
I had no doubt
Rain in the air
and nowhere to go
I wrestled my instincts
and all I know
Closing it up
and tightening each screw
There was nothing else
that I could do
I'll return
at the end of spring
I'd rather hear
those new birds sing
