I'm Just Saying
I'm just saying this shouldn’t be normal.
I’m not saying that I want us all to live in fear.
I’m just saying that maybe we shouldn’t live in a world where school shootings have become so normalized that when a shooting happened down the road at the University and my high school was on lockdown instead of sitting quietly my classmates threw balls to each other and chattered and watched a movie.
I’m just saying that maybe we shouldn’t live in a country where Black people are killed by guns so often it doesn’t even make the news.
I’m just saying that maybe my little sister shouldn’t have had to grow up with lockdown drills all the way from kindergarten so that she never knew what it was like to not have to be prepared for an active shooter in school.
I’m just saying that maybe when my little brother texts that they’re on locktown my first thought shouldn’t be is this the time it’s our high school.
I’m just saying that maybe gun violence shouldn’t be so normalized that we forget gun violence isn’t just mass shootings it’s suicide and gun violence in cities and group violence and domestic violence.
I’m just saying that maybe we shouldn’t be okay with statistics that say you are three times more likely to die by suicide just by having a gun in the house no matter how you lock it up or that women with abusers are five times more likely to die if their user has access to a gun and do nothing about it.
I’m just saying that maybe we shouldn’t do nothing about it.
I’m just saying that maybe we should do something about it.
I’m just saying this shouldn’t be normal.
