Chapter 13
If you think that I haven't seen the little moment between you two, then you are wrong.
As soon as I have read the message on my phone, I turn my head to look at my friend who smirking at me. Shoving him playfully on the shoulder, shaking my head, I smile.
Glancing back at Lina and Caleb, I watch them going from one kiosk to another as we walk in the open market near the beach.
She stops at one shop that sells jewelry made with seashells. Turning her neck she looks at me as if confirming I am still there, then giving me a small smile her attention shifts back to the jewelry.
"Like something?" I ask standing beside her.
She scrunches her nose a little and shakes her head in no.
Abruptly, her head turns in another direction, and automatically my head also snap in the same direction mirroring her action. Caleb and Nick are standing a little far from us and beckoning us to them.
Lina holds my hand and starts walking in their direction. Without even realizing I tighten my hold on her hand, liking, the feel of the smooth and soft skin of her hand against mine.
She doesn't pull back her hand when we reach them, instead, she keeps her hold on my hand. They are standing beside a juice and snack bar. The sight of food makes me realize I haven't had anything since morning.
After buying our food, we walk back to the beach.
I watch Nick asking Lina something since he is not facing me I can't understand what he has asked her.
"No," She shakes her head and after swallowing the bite.
What he has asked her? I frown thinking.
"There is a beach party tonight, why don't you come? It will be fun." Nick asks and signs so that I can also understand.
"I don't know anyone here." She licks her lips, looking hesitant.
Caleb and Nick makes are you serious face? While my mind is trying to come up with an excuse to avoid the party. Everyone is going to be there and I don't think I am ready to face them.
I zone out of their conversation, bitterness starts to rise inside me, suddenly remembering the time when I never used to miss any party. And now I just hate even the thought of it.
A hand on my shoulder pulls me back to the present.
"Will you come with me? If I go?" She mouths to me hesitantly. "I have never been to a beach party before." She bites the corner of her lip with a nervous look.
Releasing her lip from her teeth with my thumb, I nod and smile her at reassuringly not liking the nervous expression on her face. Her lips curl up into a smile as the light blush starts to appear on her cheeks causing me to laugh at her innocent expression.
When I look over her shoulder, I find Nick wiggling his eyebrows with a smirk on his face which turns into laughter as I flip him a bird.
Suddenly, fear starts to crawl inside my heart thinking about what did I just agreed to.

Nervously, I run my hand through my hair for the thousandth time. I don't want to be a freak among everyone. I can't go. She will be there too, I don't think I can handle this.
The light in my room starts flashing, indicating somebody is knocking on my door. Since I lost my hearing, dad has installed what I call a self-made calling-system. There are two special lights in my room, one button is placed just outside my room and the second one's button is in the living room. So, whenever they want to call me or knock on my door they use these buttons. Honestly, my dad is a genius and had gone out of his way to make me feel normal.
Opening the door, I am surprised to see Lina standing there.
"Hi." She waves her hand looking a bit unsure.
Slowly my eyes roam over her, as I take in her appearance. She is wearing a flower-print dress which accentuates her small waist and flows freely down, stopping just above her knees. Straps of her flats are wrapped around her ankles get my attention as she shifts her weight from one foot to another.
"Hey." Finally, I get my voice to respond to her.
"I am sorry, I came here." She looks apologetically at me, "I don't want to go there alone, looking like a freak." She makes a face as she signs.
A laugh rises in my chest and for the first time since I agreed to go to this party, I feel relieved. A few minutes ago I was having this same thought. I have a reason to think like this, however, I don't know why she is thinking like this?
Gesturing her to come inside my room, I close the door behind. Walking straight to the mirror she starts to smooth her hair, causing me to laugh.
Turning back she glares at me.
"This humidity makes my hair frizzy." She huffs and shakes her head messing her hair.
"Messy look." She winks at me feeling happy with her hair.
"I ......... for you," she mumbles. I tried to keep a frown away from my face as I don't completely understand what she is saying.
She sighs, as uncertainty etches on her features, then signs while mouthing the words.
"I bought something for you, please don't get me wrong."
Slowly I nod my head, keeping my face free of any expression. However, from inside I am getting anxious.
She takes out a small box from her cross-purse and hands it to me. I can feel she is excited and worried both at the same time.
Opening the box I find a smartwatch and a matching bracelet.
I release a breath that I don't know I was holding, as my first thought was a hearing aid.
"Thank you, even though you don't have to gift me anything." I smile at her, which eases her nerves a bit.
"Wear it," she says, with an excited smile.
Taking the watch out of the box I wear it.
"Happy?" I smile at her childlike excitement.
"No, wear the bracelet too, on another hand." She quickly signs.
Without questioning her I wear the bracelet.
She looks at me expectantly... waiting for something.
Then I feel the vibration in my hand coming from the watch. When I look back at her, she trying hard not to smile.
"You are doing something?" I ask her.
Nodding her head she raises her hand to show me a similar looking watch on her wrist. As she presses a button on the side of her watch, I feel vibrations in my watch.
"What is this?" I can't help to keep the excitement away from my tone.
She claps and throws her head back laughing, not hiding her happiness.
"Okay, listen to me now." She mouths slowly and I raise my eyebrows at her controlling the urge to laugh as this something which I don't think I am capable of doing.
"These are special watches and both are connected to each other. So when we are within a certain mile area from each other and I press this button then your watch is going to vibrate like crazy." She signs and then presses the button on her watch and for sure the watch on my hand starts emitting strong vibrations.
"That means you have planned to keep me tied to you, huh?" I raise my eyebrows teasingly at her.
"Don't worry, it is temporary." She signs rolling her eyes, "The moment I am sure you don't need me anymore, I will let you go."
Something inside me churns hearing these words.
"Okay, so what is this bracelet about?" Ignoring the feel, I point at the bracelet, figuring this is also not just an accessory.
"Close your eyes," she mouths and covers my eyes.
Then I feel my bracelet vibrating. Opening my eyes, I don't find her standing in front of me and automatically I turn to my left side to find her smiling at me.
I give her a questioning look, then she mouths my name and I feel the vibration in my bracelet. Then with a wide grin, she walks to another corner of the room, and again she mouths my name, and this time my watch vibrates.
My mouth opens in shock.
"This will catch the sound waves and alert you when somebody will try to gain your attention. Only the device which will receive the signals will vibrate, so you can guess from which side somebody is calling you."
"Now the best part." She quickly walks to me and covers my mouth when I am about to speak.
She holds my hand in front of me and points at the watch.
Swallowing hard, I keep my eyes at the watch as she presses a small button near the strap.
"Jason... you... are... the... most... amazing... person... I... have... ever... met." One by one word starts to blink on the small screen of the watch. I blink rapidly to keep my vision clear as my eyes burn with unshed tears.
"You are perfect, your small problem can't take that away from you." As soon as I finish reading the words, I raise my head to find her looking at me with a teary smile.
