To The Forgotten

The forgotten sit there
The silence encompasses them
The emotions fill them
The reality attacks them

The forgotten are our friends
The forgotten are our siblings
The forgotten are our parents
The forgotten are our children

Everyone sees the forgotten
A simple "hello" in passing
But no one remembers them
No one talks about them

The forgotten are the lovers
Unconditional love is their power
And it's taken for granted
Like water from a fountain

The forgotten are the fighters
Wars rage in their minds unseen
Battles are won and lost
And the silent demons are relentless

The forgotten are the thinkers
Their thoughts are like mountains
Hidden under a sea, unseen
Yet the thoughts shout with a deafening and silent scream

The forgotten are the secret kings and queens
Hoping to build their kingdoms one day
Find love and joy in what they've built
But the chains of society bind them down

The forgotten is the single mother, working three jobs to feed her baby
The forgotten is the homeless soldier, who gave everything for his nation
The forgotten is your friend at school, who pretends like everything is okay but is dying
The forgotten are you and I, people who give everything we've got, knowing we'll get nothing in return

Though we may feel forgotten, left behind
Cast aside as a nobody in the grand scheme of friends
We are the backbone of our schools, our society
And the truth is that we're not entirely forgotten
