Heartbreak Girl » 5 Seconds Of Summer
❝ You call me up, it's like a broken record ❞
The day was postcard perfect, even the buses were running on time, the skyscrapers shone silver in the morning sun and the sky was an unbroken backdrop of azure.
After so many days of London drizzle, the weather Gods seemed to have decided to send the Sun.
The city folk, young and old, walked with a new bounce in their stride. Everyone looked and appeared to be enjoying the day with broad smiles on their faces.
Meanwhile, at Luke's house, he was sat with his legs spread out on the bed, strumming the guitar and bobbing his head to the music. The sweet refrain of the acoustic guitar spoke a musical language which had a hypnotic soothing quality.
He twisted his fingers in all sorts of odd shapes to form chords around the maple wood fretboard and once or twice, would slide his hand up across the higher frets.
He doesn't seem to have bothered by the perfect day, 'cause this was how he spent his time. Loosing himself to the melody of the guitar was his idea of a heavenly day.
Luke's reverie was broken by the sound of his cellphone buzzing on the bedside table. He jolted upright and stared at it, before rushing to grab it, a quiet sigh escaping his mouth.
The corners of his lips twisted into a small smile as he saw his best friend's name flashing across the cellphone screen. Immediately, he jabbed the answer button and brought the phone to his ear, the grin clearly evident in his deep voice. "Hello, Evie?"
"H-Hello, Luke," The familiar voice clawed its way into his ears, and his smile slowly faded away at the tone of her voice.
"Are you okay?" he asks the question smoothly, the baritone of his voice reverberating.
Luke and Evie have been best friends for like ever. Their friendship was the kind that blossoms in the centre of your heart - the kind of friendship that evolves from a tiny seed relishing in the warm soil to a vast splendour of a tree with many ups and downs, with the sheer brilliance and beauty in it.
So, he knows her like the back of his hand. He knows when she's sad, mad, aggravated, happy, or hurt, even when she's hiding her emotions because she was not just his friend. She was more.
"It's-Its Ash," She says, and he could hear her stifled sobs through the phone.
Of course, Luke should have known it was him. It was always Ash Wolfe. Whenever, Ash broke her heart, Evie would call Luke and he was the one to hold her tight while she cried onto his shoulder.
Sure, Ash had his good looks : the tousled dark brown hair, mesmerising deep blue eyes, strong and defined features, and his usual playful smile, could make every girls swoon and hyperventilate.
He might even seem like a knight in shining armour but, the truth is, he just turns out be a douche bag wrapped up in aluminium foil, who only cause you pain and sufferings.
"What did he do this time?" Luke asked, running a hand through his blonde hair, a habit he would do when he's stressed.
"Ash broke up with me," She sobbed harder and he could imagine her crying her pretty blue eyes out, and his heart instantly grew cold. It hurts him deeply to see her like this. "I loved him, Luke, I truly loved him."
"Shh, calm down Evie, and tell me what really happened." He urged her sympathetically.
"He said he didn't like me anymore, and he just don't feel anything for me." She poured her heart out to Luke, saying how horrible Ash was to her and how he didn't used to be like this. "I just don't know what to do anymore, Luke."
"Shh... shh, it's going to be okay," Luke whispered in reassurance, the low rumble of his voice comforting. "He's not worth it, Evie. And I promise, one day he'll realize he just lost a diamond while playing with the worthless stones."
"I'll never get over him getting over me."
"You will move on, in time, you will forget him. I know that."
"How can you be sure?"
"'Cause I know somewhere out there, a guy is waiting for you- he might actually be waiting for you to notice him. When you find each other, you'll fall madly in love and have the perfect, everlasting relationship." And that guy could be me, Evie. You could be with me happily. Luke almost said it out loud but bites his tongue instead.
Evie sniffs a little before chuckling, her chuckle sounding like the soft, rolling thunder that billows across the dark skies on a stormy night. "What would I do without you, Luke,"
"Don't worry about that. I'll be always there for you." He could feel her lips lifting upwards into a smile and her one dimple crinkling, and that made his lips quirk upwards. Her smile was like a ray of sunshine, and he was a sunburn.
"How about you come over tomorrow night, and we'll do something fun - watch movies, eat? Okay?" He asked and she hummed in agreement.
"Sure, I'll call you at ten-ish. And Luke, thanks for being my friend." She said, and he flinched as his heart stung at the word 'friend'.
"You got it. Take care." He, then, thumbed the call-end button.
It was so hard for Luke to pretend being 'just friends' with Evie when everytime he looks at her, all he wants is to be more than 'just friends'. She was everything he wanted and he was everything she could want.
They were perfect for a happily-ever-after like those straight out of romantic movies and books, if only Evie could see that. But, instead he was stuck in the friend zone.
So, as much as he enjoys the concept of being just friends, in reality, it was just a bizarre form of torture.

Gone was the open blue sky of yesterday. Above was an almost unbroken layer of shades of grey, in places a chink of light managed to break through, but otherwise it was almost as dark as pre-dawn. The air was humid and smelt of storms.
The night was no better; the air still felt humid and the stars in the sky were nonexistent, as puffs of gray blankets the sky, hiding the full moon in it's full glory behind them.
Luke stayed home the whole day, hanging around his room, waiting for Evie's call, but the time passed and she never rang him up like she promised.
Luke pulled out his cellphone and tried calling her but it went straight to her voicemail.
Hello, this is Evie Woolford's voicemail. Please leave a message.
He tried seven to ten more times, and the same thing happened - straight to the voicemail. Finally, Luke put down his cellphone with a sigh, when Evie's call rang in.
"Hey Luke!" Evie giggled happily.
Her vibrant and warming giggles wrapped around Luke's thudding heart, making him smile lightly. "Hey, I thought you were coming over,"
"Yeah, I was about to but then Ash came over," Evie said, and Luke ran a hand over his face and almost scoffed in disgust.
"He did? What did that jerk want anyway?" Luke asked, still furious over the fact that Ash made her tear up.
"We're back together, Luke!" Evie squealed in excitement. "He said he made a mistake and regrets it. He is very sorry and said he wants me back."
Everything stopped for a moment, and, then, like on cue, the thunder rolled across the malevolent sky, a negative reflection of his own heart shattering into a million shards.
"That's... that's great," Luke stammered, his soft lips stretched into a smile but didn't quite reach his icy blue eyes. They were lit with sadness, and the forced expression of the contrary on his mouth would have looked a bit comical to anyone.
"Yeah, I know," Evie sighed in happiness, "I have to go now, I'll call you later. Bye Luke!" She hung up the phone and he threw his phone on the bed, silent tears rolling down his cheeks.
No! no! no! He thought; this was not what he had planned.
They were supposed to be nestled in a cosy blanket, glued to the box, watching all their favourite movies, entranced in a sea of stray popcorn and the Oreo packets until the two of them fell asleep in each other's arms. But it never happened.
Perhaps, the logical part of him knew this was going to happen, but the less-logical part of him hoped for a miracle. It hurt him even more because he had finally made up his mind to confess his feelings for her.
How long would he have to wait until she realises that the person she could ever want was always there for her. Always fixing her broken heart. Always the best friend.
How long could Luke keep on trying before his heart officially breaks? And maybe before he stops trying for good?
Well, one thing is for sure, it hurts to love someone when you can't tell what you really feel because sometimes we get hurt without them knowing, we get jealous without the right to feel that way, we want their time without being in the position to demand for it.
But despite our heart breaking in silence, we still continue to love them because somehow, in that hurtful love, there's still hope of having simple moments with them... even if it means being 'just friends'.
