My Stepping Stones
I stare at what once was,
Hearts that beat in rhythm.
I never once stopped caring,
I never dared to stray away from memories.
These memories bounded us together,
Hands interlocked in what was to be.
Undoubtedly,
Those memories were forgotten.
I stood by your side,
Listening while you talked.
I stood by your side,
With words that hurt but only to those who see.
In your eyes,
I was a rock.
A rock leading you up a path of victory.
While I merely allowed you to get there.
As I float here,
In a sea of our memories.
You sit around thinking up more ways,
More ways to step on my stones.
I will float here,
Unable to speak what needs to be spoken.
I stare into my reflection,
Seeing what I wish but isn't.
The words you spoke dug deep into my skin,
Burying itself into my soul.
For every day you use me,
For every cry you sang to me,
I listened through it all.
Yet you never dare did the same.
You left before a tear was shed.
You left.
If only I could say what needs to be said,
If only I could bloom into a flower.
But I'm still stuck as a stone for you.
I will be,
But only for you.
To the day I break free.
To the day I spread my own wings.
To the day I become me.
What will you think,
When you see the real me?
