Part 4 - Step Three: Adding Header Content
At this point, I want you to take a little break. Go get a mug of your beverage of choice. You are doing great and you've already done most of the complicated stuff. Believe it or not!
We are at a point now where you need to make a decision. Read each of the options below and make a choice. Your choice will determine which set of steps to follow next. Just like a Choose Your Own Adventure book! How fun! There, I said it again! Fun! Fun fun fun fun fun!
Option 1 – I am putting my book title on all the odd numbered pages and my author name on all the even numbered pages. (Or vice versa, if you want to buck the system or have some better theory on book design than I do. I just opened up the first book I found beside me, The Hidden Oracle, and looked at what Rick Riordan did.) If you picked Option 1, skip down to the "Book Title/Author Name Setup" section.
Option 2 – I want to put chapter titles for each chapter on the even numbered pages instead of my author name. (That's cool. It's more work, but the effect is lovely and it's actually a good standard for an instructional guide.) If you picked Option 2, skip down to the "Book Title/Chapter Title Setup" section.
Book Title/Author Name Setup
These instructions are a continuation of the steps above in Step Two: Setting Up Your Headers and Footers. If you haven't done those steps, you sure won't be able to do these steps without a ton of confusion, so good golly, go do those steps first!
1. Scroll to the Header that is on the first page of Chapter 1. We aren't going to do anything on this page, but I want to make sure you get your bearings and are on the same page as me.
2. Scroll to and place your cursor in the Header that is on the second page of Chapter 1. You should see that you are on the Even Page Header. The even pages usually have the author name while the odd pages usually have the book title. And look! That darn Same as Previous is back like a bad penny. Turn it off!
3. Type your author name. This should be one of the easiest steps in this whole process, but just because it's easy doesn't mean you shouldn't pay close attention to the details. Make sure you spell your name correctly!
4. Format the text. If you have some special font or style you'd like to use for your author name, apply it now.
5. Scroll to and insert your cursor in the Header that is on the third page of Chapter 1. This is an odd page header, but it's different than Page 1 of Chapter 1 because we had checked that box earlier to make page 1 in this section a "Different First Page." So we could put text on Page 1 with "Different First Page" turned on, but if we want the same text in the rest of the odd pages, we need to add it one more time on Page 3. In this case, I'm making the assumption you don't want the title on the first page of the chapter the same as you don't want the page number on the first page of the chapter.
6. Type your book title. Again, pay close attention to the details! Make sure you type your title correctly!
7. Format the text. Typically you would format even and odd page header text in the same style, though some book designers get fancy and left justify text on the even pages and right justify text on the odd pages rather than just centering everything. This is your chance to format to your preference.
8. Close the Headers and Footers.
9. Insert the rest of the section breaks. I bet you thought you were done. And you're so close! Just a couple things left. You now need to insert a section break in front of every chapter title (except Chapter 1, because you already did that one earlier).
a. Place your cursor at the beginning of the first piece of text on Chapter 2.
b. Go to the Page Layout tab.
c. Select the Breaks button and choose "Next Page Break."
d. Repeat these steps for every chapter left in your book.
At this point, you should be done. Review your work. If your headers and footers look right, give yourself an A+ because these were a ton of instructions to get these things to work!

These steps do not need to be completed if you chose Option 1 above.
