Lay My Heart Out Raw
We mused have driven for hours but Dylan insisted on my keeping the blindfold on for the whole journey.
"Does it have anything to do with food?" I sighed, melting into the corner of seat and car door accordingly.
"We can bring snacks if you want."
"Is it something I would consider amazing?"
"Oh definitely, I'm going to knock your socks off."
"I'm not wearing socks."
"That's how wild it'll be."
I snorted, then played with the buttons on the door to roll the window down. Cool air hit my face, it felt cold and foggy out but I couldn't tell with the darn blindfold. Though a distinct smell was in the air, it didn't feel like the desert or the wilderness. It kind of smelled like perfume but it was hard to tell from the moving car.
"How much longer?" I asked.
"Any minute, I'm just looking for a good spot to park." He answered.
Sure enough a few minutes later the car slowed to a halt. I clicked open my door and stepped out, reaching eagerly for the blindfold. Then Dylan's hands were there on mine as he laughed gently.
"Not yet not yet!" He insisted, I could hear the smile in his voice. "We're almost there I promise."
"Almost." I groaned. "It's been almost the entire way here."
He laughed again. "Okay this time I'm not stalling. Follow my lead."
He was still holding onto one of my hands, and he squeezed in gently as he pulled me along and gave me directions on where to put my feet. We were definitely going off a trail of some sort. I liked the feeling of his hand in mine. Dylan's hands were warm and smooth, just like his smiles. His fingers fit right into mine like clockwork. Someone else might have said it was meant to be.
"I smell nature but not any nature I've smelled before." I noted, climbing through what seemed like tall grass or something of the like.
"Oh boy, someone's catching on."
I stumbled through the grass until suddenly I bumped into Dylan. Apparently, he stopped and hadn't bothered to say anything. Dylan's laugh that followed however made everything better.
"Okay Mr. Impatient, you can take off the blindfold now." He said.
I sadly had to let go of his hand as I reached up to my face and pulled off the bandana. Then I gasped and stared around at everything all around me.
For miles and miles across a giant canvas of bright green were millions and millions of red splotches. The spilled over the horizon and beyond. I was standing in the middle of an ocean of flowers. Not just any flowers, bright red poppies. The same flower that seemed to haunt the corners of my whole existence and it all started when I met Dylan Clark. Of course, this would be happening here and now. It was a sure as the poppy-colored blood running underneath his skin. I held my hands up to my face and marveled at it all. It was cloudy so everything had a slight shade of blue mixed in with the plethora of delight. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.
Eventually I completed my three-sixty turn of wonderment and face him again. He had that stupid sheepish grin on his face. The real one, the grin whose edges were tinged with pure happiness and not substance abuse. He was so real and I could barely believe it, especially in times like these.
"Do you like it?" He asked, his voice came out a little quieter and more sensitive than usual.
"Dylan Clark, I'm at a loss for words." I shook my head. "What made you think of bringing me here?"
He laughed and rubbed the back of his head. "Well, you remember that dumb joke I made when we first started this whole thing? About poppies and opium or something?"
I shoved him playfully. "No!"
He cackled again. "I'm kidding! I've been wanting to come here ever since you told me we were going to California. If this isn't wonderlust I don't know what is."
"You made up the word, dummy, but I agree. This is amazing." God, I couldn't even begin to pry off the smile that was seemingly glued to my face.
He crouched down in the tall wild grass and patted the ground next to him. "Come sit and enjoy sir."
I sat down next to him and tried to contain the energetic that was flowing through my body, desperately wanting and outlet. I needed to ramble or something, I was going to explode. This cute idiot had blindfolded me and driven for hours just to surprise me with one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. He wanted to amaze me and by golly he had most certainly knocked my non-existent socks off. I had never wanted to kiss someone more, as I stared at him with the grass swaying and the flowers hitting his face. He was so handsome and gentle and I didn't deserve him. I don't deserve Dylan Clark.
"Thank you." I croaked out, just completely overcome by emotion.
"It's no problem, and surprisingly easy to find on goggle maps." He smiled again and my heart pushed painfully against my ribs.
"That's not what I meant." I glanced down at my shoes.
"Oh...?" He frowned.
"Thank you for talking to me. For wanting to be my friend. For being there for me. Thanks for knocking on my window in the middle of the night and dragging me along on this dumb, amazing road trip of yours. Thanks for saving me Dylan, I think I would have died back there in that town." I told him.
I wanted to tell Dylan everything. I wanted to lay my heart out raw before him, because I know he would handle it with his kind and soft hands and he wouldn't break it. I really, really don't deserve Dylan Clark.
He glanced down at his own shoes. "Thanks for saving me Atticus. I know you had to yell at me knock any sense in my dumb brain, but I definitely would have died more sooner than later if I hadn't met you."
I felt my heart skip a beat. "N-no problem."
My face was so hot but I could only feel thankful that I had him. We sat there in that calm silence for a bit.The slight breeze ruffling the flowers and Dylan humming a tune under his breath. The music in his brain never stopped.
"Is that why you wanted to come with me? Because you thought I could help you?"
He glanced towards me nervously. "That's... part of it. I'm sorry I've never answered this question before I'm just...nervous."
"About what?"
"That I'll scare you away again if I tell you why." He stared off at the horizon.
"I don't think that's possible." I insisted. "You can tell me you if you want, I promise I won't run away again."
He picked at the grass and pulled some of it out from the ground. "Oh-okay."
I waited patiently for him to explain. When he didn't speak for a bit I started to lose hope, when all of a sudden he scooted a little closer to me, pushing aside flowers in his wake. I suddenly realized we were very close. Dylan's oak-colored eyes, framed by his dewy blonde eyelashes, nervously looked up at me as he opened his mouth hesitantly. He looked so scared but so confident, and impossible mix only he could pull off. I could feel the answer within my grasp. I had waited so long to figure out why he wanted to come with me on this crazy trip.
"I-I...I think it's best of I just..." He trailed off.
Then he glanced up at me again, this time with a newfound confidence. Then his hands reached up to my face and I had only mere seconds to think before he grabbed the edges of my hood and gently pulled my face closer to his.
Then he kissed me.
