FEELING BAD is an awful waste of time.
The White Queen spoke to me about my issue, told me they'd forgive me in the future, and said I mustn't worry. She never said when, but I knew better than to question it. So, that being said, I took refuge in the castle while I waited for that apparent day to come.
It was a huge space, expanding over what seemed like a mile, and everything was decorated in a Winter Wonderland aura of pearly white decor. My room was at the end of the hall on the third floor, overlooking a view of the kingdom that... rejected me. I'll spare no dramatics. I could see the Queen of Heart's castle behind the forest clearing—which made me want to gag.
And I sulked at first, never leaving my room, barely eating, and remembering better times, but then I remembered that...
...I didn't care.
Okay, of course I cared, but I made my apologies, and I willingly left, and if they weren't going to forgive me, it's not my problem. It's their choice. It's Louis' choice. And in all honesty, I never meant to cause any harm! It was one of those situations where you felt like you didn't have a choice, and you weren't informed of the consequences so early on—and humility was too strong to risk coming clean beforehand.
So instead of moping about, I sucked it up, and went to explore.
"Morning Niall," I said to a knight as I passed, "is the Queen up yet?"
Oh, and I forgot to mention. I made friends with the four head guards of the castle. They were once minstrels, but grew in rank a few years ago, and now were on their 'solo careers'. By that, they meant they were just individual knights.
Niall, who was stationed outside the kitchens, smiled at me through his plain armor. "Yeh', she's up."
I smiled back. "Thank you, Niall."
"Ya' might want to ask Louis where she is, though."
"Why?"
"She had a meeting, and probably isn't in the throne room."
"Cool, cool," I said, waving at him and departing.
Making true to his suggestion, I decided to go towards the upper levels of the castle, where Louis and his other buddies would be lingering around the Queen. Unlike Niall, they were supposed to serve as bodyguards. Niall had it better though—free snacks from the kitchen.
Ascending the grand staircase, I let my fingers trail upon the glossy surface of the railing, tapping them in boredom until I reached the very top. There wasn't much to do here, so entertainment was found in the little things. It had me wishing I could be making tea in a cottage in the woods, playing fencing with my friends, or watching the stars glimmer in the sky.
It had me wishing he was still here.
"Louis," I said, as I caught sight of the three knights at the end of the upper floor, "Liam, Zayn."
The trio turned towards me as soon as I addressed them, smiles growing on their faces as they stared at me through the slits in their helmets. They were my new friends—although I still felt like losing Emma, Daniel, Harry, James, Oliver, and (not really) Draco was hard. I missed all of them (not really Draco), and I wanted them to forgive me (you guessed it, I don't care about Draco)—that rude exposer.
"Vas happenin'!" Zayn exclaimed, "Haven't seen you since yesterday, [y/n]!"
"Thought you died," Louis added.
"Almost planned your funeral," Liam said.
I laughed, coming to a stop in front of the giant mahogany door they were guarding. I guessed the Queen was in the library. Not too shabby of a meeting place, and maybe I'd get a good look at some books while I visited her.
"You guys are always so dramatic," I grinned, "no, I'm not dead."
"Thank goodness for that," Liam nodded.
"Is the Queen in there?"
Louis nodded, "doin' some light reading."
"Can I go inside?"
"Yeah, of course," Zayn nodded, pushing open the door.
As I stepped inside, I gave them all a wave, before the doors came to a close. The library was massive, with bookshelves spanning all the way to the top of the ceiling, and a balcony that overlooked a section of classing Wonderland literature. I noticed a familiar set of blonde hair curled up in a chair, and made my way over there.
I passed a copy of Tea For Twenty on the way, but pretended to ignore it.
The Queen looked up when she saw me, flashing me her pearly smile. She closed the book in her hand immediately.
"Why hello, sweetheart," she beamed, "good to see you're already up."
I hovered by her chair, unsure of if I should sit down or keep standing. I didn't really want to sit. I'd very much rather do something to keep me occupied, which on second thought, wouldn't be hard to do considering I was in a library.
"I was wondering if I could read a few books," I said, my hands clasped behind my back, "just out of interest."
She looked delighted. "Of course!"
"Any recommendations?"
"Yes, yes, there's this book called 'Doladees' over in the history section that would do you nicely," she encouraged, pointing behind her, "it's signed by Edward Doladees himself!"
Wow, that sounded boring.
But, not wishing to offend the Queen's taste in books, I gave her a polite nod, scurrying off towards the history section in search of that book. She returned to her book promptly.
The history section was probably the dustiest place in the entire castle, and I held my breath as I dusted off the shelves in search of the book. There were so many here, and they all were the same color of White. The pains of keeping an aesthetic, I suppose.
There were biographies, family trees, studies of people of both Wonderland and the White Queen's realm, and I could feel my eyes drooping as I passed through them, one, by one, by one, by....one?
My finger stopped trailing along the spines of the books when I noticed a peculiar title on one of them:
FOR PROPHECIES & LIES
"What...?" I murmured under my breath, pulling it out from the shelf, "prophecies?"
The last thing I wanted was a reminder of my lies, but something told me to look inside. It wouldn't hurt, would it? Flipping it open, I began to flip through the pages, searching for anything familiar.
Until I came across a chapter titled:
THE TWO
There was nothing on it, just those two words, so I turned the page to see if there was anything behind it. To my surprise, there was a section titled:
THE FIRST
Until the day the girl arrives
Wonderland will meet it's fate
Writhing in the world's demise
Until the jabberwockies slain.
But that was it. The paragraph ended there, and the rest of the page was filled with cartoon doodles and figurines that drew out the mentioned prophecy. That couldn't be it, could it? I could have sworn there was more to it!
"Where's the second part?" I muttered to myself, "I swear there was a second part."
My curiosity over taking me, I flipped the page again, only to be met with a second page titled:
THE SECOND
But still the one who steals the throne
And makes this Wonderland her home
She'll make the crown of hearts her own
and steals the heart of her betrothed
And then it clicked.
"Oh my god," I gasped, nearly dropping the book, "you're kidding."
It was all making sense now! I remembered the first day I was shown the prophecy back at Harry's mushroom, and I distinctly remembered seeing the prophecy ripped in half and stuck together with tape! But what if it wasn't meant to be stuck together—what if there were two different prophecies, for two different girls?
That means I wouldn't have lied at all.
I was the girl from the prophecy, just not the one they thought.
"I have to go," I called out, tucking the book under my arm, "thank you for everything!"
The Queen, who was clearly confused at my outburst, could only wave as I rushed out of the library, the wind rushing behind me. I felt like I was running on air.
And I needed to get back to Wonderland immediately.
