Ch.9: A Forseen Adversary

Darius found himself in a large cathedral, with a depiction of the last supper behind the main altar.

Darius walked towards the main altar, with voices of his past echoing through the massive room.

"Father is a zealot! He would see us hanged for not believing his god!"

"How dare you! Turn on your own children for thinking for themselves!"

"Witchcraft!? You accuse me of witchcraft!? You truly are mad!"

Darius saw a man at the altar he wished he would never see again.

"Father?" Darius asked.

Before Darius stood his father, a priest of extreme faith.

"My son, how you disappoint me." Said Darius' father.

"I disappoint you by turning on a unproven god." Replied Darius.

"Unproven? He performs miracles everyday, and you claim that his presence is unproven?"

"Your "miracles" are a matter of science and nature, two proven areas."

"You would trust science and nature over god?"

"I trust what is proven."

As Darius argued with his father, he felt a soft hand on his shoulder, followed by the feel of a chin.

"He believes what he wants, nothing wrong with that." Said the voice behind Darius.

Darius turned to see Alice, glowing in a heavenly light.

"Wake up, Darius." Said Alice.

Darius jumped awake, moving his arms only to see that he was held up by rope.

Darius looked around him, and realized he was being held in what appeared to be a metalworking factory.

Darius saw Alice, unconscious, and her hands tied to a pipe coming from the floor.

Darius tried to escape his binds, but to no avail.

"It is a remarkable thing, the mind, wouldn't you agree Darius." Said a voice.

From the shadows came Roxford, accompanied by two thugs.

"To think the mind has the ability to travel to other worlds, extraordinary."

Roxford gave a passing glance at Alice as Roxford's thugs untied her and took her through a set of doors.

"Your a damned murderer." Said Darius as he was untied by the other two thugs.

"Murderer? I'm a man of discovery!" Replied Roxford.

"But at what cost? Endangering the lives of not only people on this world but those of Wonderland?"

"Necessary losses."

"You bastard! Moreaux should never have trusted you! Rest his soul!"

"Rest his soul?, there must have been a confusion."

Darius was dragged through the doors, where he saw the door.

A massive blue portal, with scientists and thugs moving like gears of a ornate clock.

In a cage connected to the door was a man who appeared malnourished.

Roxford approached the cage and pointed his hand at it.

"I present to you, the great PIERRE MOREAUX."

There he was, the legendary Moreaux, weak and beaten.

"What have you done to him Roxford?" Asked Darius.

"You see, the portal requires a power source, a energy only found in the bodies of those who have entered Wonderland." Replied Roxford.

"So you will kill your own friend?"

"Again, a necessary loss."

Darius was absolutely disgusted at the evil nature of Roxford, who would betray his own friend.

Darius saw Alice, once again with her hands chained to a pipe coming from the ground.

"She has no part in this, release her, and keep me." Said Darius.

"Oh, but she does Darius, you see, she has the same ability to travel to Wonderland as you and Moreaux, you three are essential to my portal being operational." Replied Roxford.

"For power."

"Yes, Darius for power."

With that, Roxford motioned for his thugs to throw Darius in the same cage as Moreaux.

The thugs threw Darius into the cage, and he quickly got up to attack them, but was met with the iron bars locking him in.

Darius felt defeated, helpless, as he watched Roxford activate the door.

Darius had to think of a way to escape the cage, he needed to stop Roxford and save earth and Wonderland.

He needed to save Alice.

"C-Come closer." Said Moreaux.

Darius cautiously approached the weakened adventurer.

"I-Is she alright? My darling queen? I have not seen her in so long." Said Moreaux.

"The Queen Of Hearts? She is fine, she misses you." Replied Darius.

A tear rolled down Moreaux's face.

"I must return to her, she is my everything." Said Moreaux.

"And I must save Alice, there must be a way to escape." Replied Darius.

"There may be a way."

"What?"

"The door requires constant power, if it were to lose power for even a moment, it would collapse and close, if you could reach the power core and damage it, it would give us enough time to escape to Wonderland."

"Brilliant!, but how do we get out of this cage?"

Moreaux pulled a lock pick from his back pocket.

"This will aid in our escape." Said Moreaux.

Darius began to pick the lock, cautious of the thugs guarding his cage.

Darius finally unlocked the lock, cautiously opening the cage door.

With Moreaux's aid, Darius dispatched the thugs, locking them in the cage.

With the stealthy nature of a panther, Darius picked up a loose pipe, and snuck his way to the door's power core.

With a swing filled with absolute anger, Darius damaged the power core.

The power core hissed with the raw energy of Wonderland, and soon exploded, launching Darius back.

The room fell into complete madness, as raw Wonderland energy flew through the room, turning any it struck into a blue dust.

Moreaux, with the little Olympian strength he had left, fought of Roxford's thugs as Darius untied Alice.

When Darius freed Alice, they quickly ran to the door, only to be stopped by Roxford, holding a gun.

"No! I have spent too much time on this portal! Wonderland and it's power will be mine!" Roxford shouted.

Roxford, with a burning anger in his eyes, began to pull the trigger of his gun.

Just as Roxford was going to shoot Darius, A sharp ended metal pipe pierced his chest, and he fell dead.

Moreaux was revealed to be Roxford's killer.

"We must go now!" Moreaux shouted.

With Moreaux leading them, the group ran into the portal at the last minute, and in transit to Wonderland, Darius lost conciseness.
