Dumbfounded
In a clever endeavor indeed
I went out riding one day upon my steed
And happened upon my brain once gone
my mind; now freed
There I spoke with a broken wheel
my hunting dog at my heel
And in a lapse perhaps I spoke too soon
discovering I had forgotten my meal
The world did spin upon its spindle
my stomach did spark and a fire it kindled
Twas at that moment I heard the Dinner-bell
and at that moment that I fell
Finding myself in the farmer's house
I heard the squeaking of a dormouse
In another room they were breaking bread
as I felt an aching in my head
Twas the farmer's daughter who did fetch me
and take me to the table side
Her eyes shone bright in the fire's flame
and if only I could remember my name
She smiled all the while as I ate
and I was famished so I cleaned my plate
At the door she bid me well
and I was now under her spell
As I made it home it began to snow
and all my lamp light was quite low
Stabling and feeding horse and dog
I barely breathe out, 'oh dear God'
For now this avowed bachelor's way
had taken a turn that very day
At one time I had thought myself very wise
until dumbfounded by her eyes
