IT WAS YOUR typical October night. Stormy, foggy, and humid in small town Hawkins, Indiana. And although it had been years since Elizabeth (though she hated her full name, so she preferred her nickname Annie) Hopper lived here, it felt like she belonged right at home.
All she needed was her little sister right by her side. Of course, that was impossible. Since her younger sister Sara had died almost half a decade ago. It seemed like yesterday when Annie and Sara were once inseparable.
Well that felt like centuries ago. The good old days.
Within four months after little Sara Hopper's death, their parents Diane and Jim divorced. Unfortunately, the judge was very harsh on Annie's father. Only allowing Annie to see her father, Jim Hopper, once a year.
As soon as the divorce was finalized, Annie's mother remarried a scientist named Dr. Martin Brenner and they moved to Indiana's capital, Indianapolis.
Soon two months after Diane and Dr. Brenner's wedding, Diane was pregnant with Annie's half-brother, Richie.
Richie as well was a jerk to Annie.
In the first place, Annie had no problem with her mother remarrying. It was just ... Annie's stepfather was nothing average.
He would act kind and sympathetic towards Annie when Diane was around, but when they were alone ... things were different.
Dr Brenner would scream at her when they were alone. He would force her to do strange things. Like painful experiments on her, or even measure her heart rate.
But one day, Dr Brenner had made an accident in his experiment.
Dr Brenner had accidentally given Annie superpowers.
Specifically, the power to read minds when desired to. As well as Telekinesis, Electrokinesis, and even Pyrokinesis.
After a few months of hiding her supernatural powers, Annie finally decided to expose Dr Brenner and her powers to her mother, Diane.
In result, Diane believed Annie was the devils' child. Causing Diane to kick Annie out of the house.
Annie sat in a public bus with a very old map in her hands and her brown messenger bag on the side of her hip, waiting for the Hawkins stop.
"Indianapolis to Hawkins stop here!" said the bus driver.
Annie walked through the thin aisle and off the bus, watching as the bus drove off into the distance. She looked around. There were only deep forest trees in front of her.
According to the map, it said that Jim Hopper's cabin wasn't too far. Meaning that the cabin was actually inside the forest and Annie would have to go looking for it.
As Annie started to walk through the dark foggy woods, a loud rustling noise was heard. Assuming it was a branch, she continued to walk on.
Annie looked at the map. "Where the hell is this place —"
While walking, Annie thought more about Sara and her dad.
Annie remembered one summer, Jim would take Sara and Annie to the police station every Saturday. While Jim worked, the girls would just spend the whole day annoying Flo, eating raspberry jam donuts, and taking Callahans' handcuffs.
She then remembered the time when Jim took Annie and Sara deer hunting. While Sara was far too afraid to even go near the shotgun, Annie had killed three deers in one shot.
Or that time when Annie and her dad went to Sara's preschool, and had beaten up all the kids who bullied Sara.
About ten minutes later, Annie heard more strange noises.
Due to her fast reflexes, Annie zapped right around to see a small skinny boy, about the same height and age as her, with a brown bowl haircut. The boy, who looked awfully scared, was holding a blue bike. Even his greenish-blue eyes were visible in the dark night.
"Wait!" Annie shouted as she ran over to the boy. He looked almost relived to see Annie wasn't some dangerous animal.
"Hey, does Jim Hopper live around here?" Annie asked him.
Pretty. Don't be stupid Will.
The boy nodded. "Um yeah he lives near the quarry. It's hard to see at night, but I think you'll be able to find him."
Annie smiled at him. "Thanks loser. I'm Elizabeth by the way. Elizabeth Hopper. But the name Elizabeth is stupid so everyone calls me Annie."
The boy looked at his shoes. "I'm Will Byers. Wait did you say hopper?"
Annie nodded. "Yeah I'm Jim Hopper's oldest daughter. He's the chief of police here in Hawkins I think. I used to live in here a while back before my sister —- I mean parents split up."
"Where did you move from?" Will asked randomly in an awkward tone.
"Indianapolis. Indiana's capital." Annie replied. "I'm in eighth grade."
Will smiled nervously. "Yeah I'm in eighth too. My mom and the chief are friends, so I think we'll see each other around. You can even meet my friends. Maybe you can play D&D with us at Mikes' house! I could teach you how to play! When I tell the party I met someone who lived in the city! Or you could join the Hawkins Middle AV club if everyone in the party is okay with it! My friend Mike is the president. And my other friend Dustin is the treasurer and secretary —"
Annie raised her eyebrows. As much as Annie hated to say it, there was no way Will Byers was popular at school. Hopefully he wasn't bullied.
"AV club? Dungeons and Dragons?" Annie said in slight amusement.
She thinks I'm a dork.
Will went bright red. "I mean you don't have to I was just —"
Annie smiled warmly and patted Will's shoulder.
"I'll see you around at school Byers."
"See you." Will breathed.
After about half an hour later of listening to Will's advice, Annie had successfully found the small wooden cabin that belonged to the one and only Jim Hopper.
Standing at the front door, Annie knocked on the door. Feeling slightly nervous for the first time in a while.
Jim Hopper opened the door within seconds to see his eldest daughter.
Annie laid on the side of the door, smirking. "So when's the last time you shaved Jimmy?"
Without saying a single word, Jim shut the door closed.
Annie groaned as she laid her head on the door.
"Oh come on Dad, lemme in. I haven't even done anything yet."
Annie's father opened the door with an angry expression.
"You haven't done anything yet?" Jim snapped. "What the hell are you doing here? You ran away didn't you?! You should be in the city with your mother. Y'know what?! I'm calling Diane —"
Annie chuckled nervously. "Dad! Come on! First, just let me explain myself okay? You see you might wanna sit down for what crazy shit I'm about to tell you."
"Express your thoughts to me." Jim said plainly with no emotion.
And so ... Annie explained everything. From Diane remarrying a mad scientist who accidentally gave Annie supernatural powers, to when Diane kicked Annie out of the house.
"Brenner? The scientist who worked at Hawkins Lab? He's missing." Jim insisted.
"Yeah he is. He's on a 'business trip' is what Mom says. You can even ask Mom what's her husband's name if you don't believe me Jimmy." Annie told him with a grin on her face.
Jim looked at his daughter. "Don't call me Jimmy, it's Dad."
Annie scoffed in amusement. "Oh really? I didn't think you were so excited to see your favorite daughter Dad a few minutes ago."
Jim rolled his eyes playfully. "So you were a test subject of Brenner's?"
"Technically. I don't remember much of the experiments he did on me. They're too freaking painful to remember honestly." Annie mumbled.
There was something that Annie's father seemed to be hiding. Usually, Jim was very welcoming to his family. Especially his own child.
"What are you hiding in there Dad?" Annie snapped quickly. "Secret girlfriend hm?"
Jim looked into Annie's eyes for a minute. They were a pale shade of brown, just like his. After all, people used to think they were exactly alike.
Suddenly, a feminine face appeared from behind Jim. A girl around Annie's age with curly hair up to her ears.
And honestly, she didn't even look like a girl. She was dressed in baggy overalls.
A loud screech came from Annie. Jim turned around to see what Annie had seen.
"Hey loser." Annie said in shock to the girl.
"L — loser?" The girl whispered softly.
"You don't know what a loser is?" Annie asked.
The girl shook her head.
"It's like .... a idiot ... knucklehead ... a mouth-breather." Annie explained. Making the girl smile.
"Don't take it personal kid. She says that to everyone." Jim told the girl.
Annie yawned. "So, you gonna tell me who the hell this is or I am going have to ask her myself?"
Jim squeezed the bridge of his nose.
Annie rolled her eyes, walked straight into the cabin, and sat next to the girl.
"So loser, where you from?" Annie asked her.
"Bad men —"
"Okay, okay." Jim butted in. "I'll tell you who she. She was a test subject of Brenner."
And Jim told Annie everything. From the Upside Down, to Eleven.
"You've had it rough Eleven." Annie noted. "Those mouth-breathers are gone now."
Eleven rolled up her sleeve to show a small tattoo that read '011'.
Annie smiled kindly, and showed a small tattoo on her own arm that read '013.'
"You." Eleven pointed at Annie. "Very brave. Like hero."
"I guess." Annie smiled.
"Annie, why don't you go ahead and get to bed? El will show you your room." Jim said, "I have to go register you for school and call Diane."
Eleven walked into a room as Annie just stared at her Dad.
"Something wrong kid?" Jim asked.
"I missed you Dad. A lot." Annie whispered. "And not seeing your face everyday is shit."
Jim smiled. "I missed you too kid."
