the sad truth is that the truth is sad
More yelling was heard, yelling from what Finn could only assume was the 'strawhat' boy one of Buggy's freaks talked about. She sat nervously on the makeshift bed, rubbing the raw skin surrounding her wrists.
She glanced at the green-haired boy, who sat against the wheel. The rope was still around his wrists, but barely. They were around enough to make it look as if he was still tied tightly, but Finn knew that if he was as strong as he looked that he could rip right through the restraints.
The orange-haired girl continued picking at the lock that kept her inside the small cage, leaving Finn to sit on the bed and fiddle her thumbs. She was nervous, her stomach erupting with butterflies as she waited. There was nothing to do at this point except for wait, and although she knew she should be thinking of ways to get out of there the first moment she could - her mind wondered.
She shouldn't trust - couldn't trust - these two hostages. She knew that she'd just get hurt as she always did. If her own parents were so up and willing to hurt her, why should she trust these two complete strangers to treat her with any kindness and sympathy when she didn't even deserve it?
The boy, growing antsy, began to pull at the rope restraining his feet. He grunted, earning an eye roll from the girl in the cage. The tension was thick, almost to the point where Finn wished she weren't there to witness it.
"What?" The boy asked, seeming to notice the other girl's expression.
"This is my life now," Was what the girl responded with.
Yet another conversation that shouldn't really involve Finn. She didn't know these people nor did she really care to - all she cared about at this point was getting herself out of here and out of reach from her old life.
If her parents didn't want her, then she didn't want them. She could survive without them, considering she'd gotten this far. At this point, she just needs to get out of the chains and maybe the two strangers will distract Buggy enough for her to slip out unnoticed.
"You want to trade places?" The boy sarcastically asked, glancing around the room.
The girl just ignored him, not seeming to have another snarky comment to respond with. The sound of someone outside of the room caught Finn's attention, her heart racing as she glanced to the boy with green hair.
He looked from Finn to the other girl, his chest picking up slightly. "Someone's coming."
"It's one of the freaks," Finn commented lowly, knowing who it was. She'd only been here such a short time - but she'd been smart enough to be able to pick up how certain people sounded when she walked. She hadn't cared to learn any of their names besides Buggy himself, but she was quick to pick up how each of them acted.
"I need more time. Keep them talking." The orange-haired girl spoke with wide eyes.
Finn felt nauseous due to her nerves. She knew these freaks were mean, considering who their leader was. She knew if they caught this girl with a lock pick it'd be over for all of them - even her.
Even if she hadn't had anything to do with it, she'd still get blamed. It's how it's always been.
"I don't talk. I hit things." The boy responded. Finn looked at him with a look of confusion.
"She means distract them, I think."
Just as the last syllable left Finn's mouth, one of the freaks came in on his unicycle. He rode in a circle before stopping a few feet away from the boy, dropping to the ground.
He let go of the unicycle before cautiously stepping closer to the wheel, looking the boy straight in the eyes.
The girl in the cage was turned away from the lock, one hand behind her back. Finn could see her messing with the lock pick from the side, showing she was just hiding her true actions to prevent the freak from seeing anything.
"Remember me?" The boy with long hair asked, his eyes never leaving the other boy.
"No. Must be some other homicidal, unicycle-riding clown."
Without another word, the boy on the ground threw a hard punch to the boy on the wheel. He hit him directly in the stomach, earning a slightly pained groan from the boy himself.
Finn gasped, launching herself forward without thinking. The chains rattled and prevented her from moving far, but it was enough to catch the clown's attention.
"Buggy isn't happy with you, you know? You caused him a big deal of stress by your little stunt last night." He looked at Finn with disgust. He stepped closer to her, seeming to forget about the boy on the wheel.
He recovered quickly, almost as if he hadn't had a rough hit to the gut. He just watched the freak as he approached Finn, the girl's eyes on him.
"D-don't bother him," She mumbled, ignoring his words. She was acting without thinking, something she's always done despite her constant karma. She didn't owe anything to the two hostages, yet here she was speaking up.
Stepping toe to toe, Buggy's freak looked down at her. "You going to do something about it, trash?" He moved his arm, causing Finn to flinch back slightly. This made him smirk, the corner of his mouth rising in pride.
"Whatever problems you got, solve them with me. Don't bring her into it." The green-haired boy spoke. Finn looked at the boy, seeing he hadn't even been looking their way.
She tried to look for an emotion, but failed to find any. It was odd he took the attention back away from her and toward him again, almost making it feel like her standing up hadn't been worth anything.
Not that Finn had a plan. She didn't know what she planned to do, or why she stood up in the first place. She just didn't like seeing him punch the boy so hard, and so she acted out of instinct instead of thinking first.
Which is never a good thing.
"I've been thinking about you for years," The freak said, seeming to give into the boy's jab. He stood back where he had been before Finn stood up.
Feeling sheepish and useless, she cowered back down onto the bed. She watched the scene unfold, staying silent just like she was supposed to.
"You killed my brother," The man then said.
Finn's eyes widened, looking at the boy on the wheel. Just like most of her time with him, she noticed he had little to no expression. Almost as if he didn't care, which wouldn't surprise her since he's supposedly a pirate hunter.
The boy with green hair looked at him, "I've killed a lot of pirates."
"My name is Cabaji," The freak said. "And a couple of years ago, you hunted us across the Goa Kingdom." He began to pull two blades from his waistband, Finn's nerves growing by the second. "You followed us for weeks, day and night, never relenting, like some kind of demon."
The boy with green hair put his head down before looking to his friend. The girl nodded, Finn noticing the small interaction between the two of them. She then made eye contact with him as he looked away, but didn't move as he looked back to Cabaji.
Cabaji looked back at the girl with orange hair, a look of slight confusion written on his face. He began to walk back toward her - probably to intimidate her the way he had successfully done with Finn - but the boy with green hair cut him off.
"Still not ringing a bell."
Cabaji chucked one of the daggers to the boy on the wheel, landing it right above his left shoulder. "You cut off his head and stuffed it in a bag. All for a few Berry."
Cabaji's tone was one that spooked Finn. She felt defenceless and helpless sitting there as if she were a waiting duck, but there was truly nothing she could do. She's done all she could, which wasn't much, but it was something. Even if she weren't chained, she was no match. She'd been taught a few self-defense moves by her father when she was a child - when he loved her - but even then, it was barely that. If she could defend herself, she wouldn't be here in the first place.
The boy sighed, shutting his eyes for a moment before looking back at Cabaji. "Okay, that sounds like me." He didn't seem intimidated at all, which shocked Finn as she was scared shitless at this point.
She had no idea how she was getting out of there of if she was even getting out of there. But she was scared either way and it terrified her even more he didn't seem bothered at all.
"Let's see if you can keep your head, yeah?" Cabaji asked. He stepped to the side and gripped onto the wheel, beginning to turn the boy around in circles.
Finn got dizzy just watching him spin in circles, and each time the dagger landed on the wood it caused her to jump. She was afraid with each and every second that went by that one of the knifes would stab the boy, but so far Cabaji's just shown he has really bad aim, much to their luck.
Knowing she was feeling something for him for no reason, she just held her legs to her chest. She looked down at the floor and just listened to the sound of the daggers hitting the wheel, shutting her eyes to distract herself.
Time seemed to go on for forever. Dagger after dagger, comment after comment from Cabaji. The boy continued to spin in circles with no reaction, seemingly bored with the situation at hand.
"You really don't fear death, do you?" Cabaji asked.
"No, I just don't fear you." The other boy was quick to respond, his eyes shut as he spoke.
Cabaji, angry with the answer, chucked another dagger toward the pirate hunter. It landed right above his arm, the arm Finn hadn't been able to reach.
"You know... I'm going to enjoy this." Cabaji said as he walked closer to the boy, unaware of the rip in the rope holding him to the wheel.
Finn had loosened the other side enough to where if he wanted to pull his hand out, he could. Now the only thing tying him to the wheel was the ropes attached to his feet, which wasn't much if his arms were free.
"As soon as Captain Buggy's finished with you, you're mine." Cabaji added.
"Uh-" The boy started, "As tempting as that sounds, I'm not going to be sticking around."
"Really? Like you have anywhere else to be. Tell me, Roronoa Zoro, where else do you need to be?" Cabaji asked.
Roronoa Zoro. That's the boy with green hair's name. Finn had heard the name before, but only rumors and gossip around town. Nothing factual - at least nothing she had thought was factual.
"I didn't used to think so." The boy - Zoro, said. He avoided eye contact, and still failed to show any emotion but this was the first thing that Finn heard leave his mouth that sounded... genuine. "Luffy changed that."
"That simpleton in a straw hat. Don't tell me you actually believe in him?" Cabaji asked with a smirk, shock evident on his features.
"I don't need to. He believes in himself." Zoro spoke as he looked Cabaji straight in the eyes. "It rubs off."
Finn felt a hint of jealousy flow through her body, wishing she had someone the way this straw hat kid had Zoro. But the feeling left as soon as it arrived as Cabaji began to laugh, as if Zoro had said some funny joke.
She watched as the girl had freed herself from the cage, somehow managing to do so without making a sound.
Zoro cut more of the rope with the dagger right above his wrist, never looking away from Cabaji. "And one more thing," He said. "Don't turn around."
Going against what he'd just been told, Cabaji turned around anyway. The girl with orange hair immediately kicked him as hard as she could, sending him back into Zoro's grip.
He held Cabaji in a chokehold as the girl grabbed one of the daggers in the wheel, cutting at the rope Finn had loosened. She then cut at the ones surrounding his feet, letting him free of the wheel completely.
By the time he was let loose, Cabaji had been knocked out from the tight chokehold Zoro had on him. He stepped away from the wheel and after the girl, who had begun heading toward the area of the room where their belongings had been. "What's the plan?"
Finn watched silently as the girl grabbed what looked to be a staff, Zoro grabbing what looked to be three different swords. They hadn't even looked her way, and if she were being completely honest - it devasted her.
Sure, she wasn't too much help and the little help she had been was basically null and void since the other girl had cut the rope anyway. They owed nothing to Finn, despite her useless act of kindness. She should've expect this, as she'd never been shown anything otherwise.
Part of her was even sure that if her help had been useful, she'd still be left here alone.
"You do have a plan, right?" Zoro continued, "That's your thing, plans."
"I say," The girl started, looking to Zoro with a look of determination. "We beat the hell out of every clown we see."
He smiled, one of the first signs of emotion Finn had seen since the moment he talked about this Luffy character.
Defeated as the girl had already left and Zoro was following suit, she rested her head on her knees in despair. Tears formed in her eyes but she just squeezed them shut.
This had been her own fault because she let herself think two random strangers would show her any sort of kindness, despite knowing how it's been in the past.
In the hallway, Zoro stopped just before they could exit and go in the direction where Luffy was. The other girl stopped as she failed to hear his footsteps following after her, looking at him to see a look of thought on his face.
"You want to help her, don't you?" She asked, crossing her arms over her chest. "The girl."
"She tried to help us." Zoro responded.
"And didn't get very far. We need to get out of here like, now, or we're not getting anywhere." The girl responded, her eyebrows raised in concern. "Don't you want to save Luffy?"
"Obviously," Zoro scoffed. "But Luffy would also want us to save her. If you're so worried, just give me the lock pick and I'll do it myself."
The girl rolled her eyes as Zoro held his hand out, waiting for the tool.
"Nami," Zoro said again. "Leave if you want. But I'm not."
Nami sighed, pushing past Zoro and back to the room where Finn resided. She went straight for the girl, dropping to her knees as Finn looked at them in confusion.
"W-what?" She asked, "What are you doing?"
"You helped us, we help you." Was all Nami responded with, using her lock pick on the cuffs.
She unlocked both of her feet from the wretched chains, but just as she began to work on the ones binding her wrists the sound of someone nearby caught their attention.
"Yeah, we don't have time for this Nami," Zoro intervened. He walked up to the wall where the chain was connected to, ripping it out almost effortlessly.
"You should've just done that from the beginning," Nami rolled her eyes before turning to Finn. "You- you can run like that right?" She asked as she pulled Finn up from her spot.
Finn nodded, adrenaline beginning to course through her body as she followed Nami out of the room and into the hall.
Immediately, Buggy's clown posse began to attack after seeing they'd escaped. She felt helpess as Nami fought back with the staff she carried, Zoro fighting people with either his bare hands or his swords.
It wasn't long before they were all defeated - and not with Finn's help.
They entered the main room, where Buggy was leaned up against a glass case. Inside the case was a boy - submerged under the water.
This must be Luffy, Finn thought as she separated from Nami. She hid in the back against the wall, too afraid to do anything. She wasn't any help and she knew that, not to mention she knew what Buggy was capable of.
"You want out? You know the price you have to pay," Buggy told the boy.
Instead of giving in to whatever it was Buggy wanted, the boy just smiled as he tapped the glass.
Buggy turned, his eyes widening as he saw Nami. She chucked her staff and it hit the glass, cracking it as soon as it hit. It flew back as if it were a boomerang, the girl catching it smoothly as she prepared for a fight.
Turning back to the case, Buggy watched in horror as the glass began to shatter, moving from the middle of the case to the sides.
He began to turn quickly, obviously looking for something, as worry filled his body. "Where are my freaks?!"
Zoro emerged from another entrance, two out of three of his swords in hand. He had a bandana tied around his head, covering his forehead. "They're not coming."
Before Buggy could respond, the glass shattered completely as too much water had filled it up. The water came barrelling out of the case, along with the boy who had been on the verge of drowning.
He immediately began coughing up water. Water escaped his mouth along with another item, something that had Finn looking at him in shock.
It was a long cylinder, the color of copper. At the sight of this, Buggy crawled toward it. She knew he was weakened because of the water, that was the only answer as to why he hadn't just jumped up again.
"The map!" He exclaimed, as Luffy began reaching out as well.
"My hat!"
They both pulled themselves in two opposite directions, heading for two separate items.
Finn watched as she messed with the chains attached to her wrist, knowing something needed to be done.
Without another thought she boosted herself forward, sliding across the wet ground to grab onto the map before Buggy could lay his hands on it.
The clown looked at her in surprise, a smug smirk covering his face. "You know, I'm not surprised you've managed to let yourself free again. I'm going to need you to give me that map."
"N-No," She stuttered, holding it tightly.
"Give it to me, freak. You really don't want me to take it from you." Buggy held his hand out.
Finn shook her head quickly, fear running through her. She successfully grabbed the map, but at what cost? Where would she go from here? She couldn't escape Buggy and she knew that.
Buggy's face twitched in anger as he pulled his hand back, beginning to step toward Finn.
"No," She mumbled to herself, calming her breathing. She didn't move but stayed put, an odd feeling going through her body as she kept her eyes on Buggy.
Then, as if by some magical miracle, the room felt like it was beginning to shift. The distance between Finn and Buggy grew, causing the clown to look at Finn with a knowing look.
"So you are an actual freak, aren't you?" He asked softly.
Zoro began to step up and charge for Buggy but was stopped by Nami, who shook her head. She then pointed to Finn, who held onto the map tightly.
"I'm not," Finn started, shaking her head quickly. "I'm not a freak!"
"You realize what you're doing, right?" Buggy asked as he stepped closer, condensing the space between the two. This didn't change anything though, as the space just grew further. "You're doing this."
"W-what?" Finn asked, looking at how different the room looked.
"You're changing the room. Making it bigger to protect yourself. I knew you belonged here." Buggy told the girl.
"Okay, I'm done with this." Zoro snapped as he stepped forward. He swung his swords at Buggy, but it did no good. The clown just separated his body into pieces where it was the sword hit, preventing him from getting injured.
Nami watched in shock, frozen in her spot as Buggy put himself back together, laughing at the boy.
"Surprise, shithead!" He exclaimed, his attention completely off of Finn now.
The room slowly condensed into its actual size, a feeling of tiredness flowing through Finn as if she'd used her energy to do something. She looked at the map in her hands, knowing she needed to get it to Nami.
Before she could think of a plan, Buggy's body fell apart and into the air. It spun in circles, Buggy's head watching the group as he pulled himself into pieces.
The pieces began flying around Nami and Zoro, who now stood back to back as they watched the separated pieces.
"How am I supposed to slice a guy who's already in pieces?" Zoro asked.
"This is not part of the plan," Nami responded with, briefly glancing at the guy behind her.
Finn went to move forward and make her way to the boy lying on the ground, but before she could make it far something tripped her.
Flying to the ground with a grunt, she turned to see one of Buggy's hands tripped her. With no struggle the map slipped from her grip, taking the only thing she knew would make up for them setting her free.
Nami and Zoro began hitting at the flying body parts at this point, doing their best to dodge it at the same time. They were preoccupied, meaning they hadn't even noticed the map had been stolen from Finn.
The long chain attached to her wrists began to move, and Finn watched in shock as Buggys other hand pulled one end of it around her neck.
Finn gasped for air as the chain tightened around her neck, pulling her along the ground toward the wall. Tears filled her eyes as she struggled to breathe, her lungs begging for air as she tugged at the chain.
She didn't even know how he'd managed it, but it wasn't surprising since it was quite a long chain. Not only did it tug against her neck but also strained against her wrist, making her movements very minimal as it twisted her arms around.
Neither Nami or Zoro could come help either, as Zoro was fighting off one of Buggy's feet. It pushed him against the glass case their friend Luffy just escaped from, causing the entire thing to move backwards.
Nami was kicked roughly with the other foot, knocking the air out of her completely as it lunged her backward. Both Nami and Zoro were knocked down completely, moving them out of view.
Finn couldn't breathe, tears falling down her cheeks as she was held against her will to the wall.
Luffy, who had been regaining his strength, stood up. He watched in dismay as Buggy put himself back together again, the iron grip holding Finn back releasing.
She was able to breathe again, her chest moving quickly up and down as she struggled to gain her strength.
"Ah, would you look at that?" Buggy asked as he noticed Luffy moving. He walked toward him as Luffy gathered his breath, not having his full strength back yet. "Somebody escaped my Tank of Doom." He pointed to Luffy, a playful tone in his voice. "Well I'll be back to finish you off. Right after I tear apart your sad excuse for a crew!"
Finn slowly moved to stand up again, her eyes on Buggy. She was out of view of him, somewhat behind him as his main focus was on Luffy.
"You can dump seawater on me, and I'll let it slide." Luffy slowly responded to Buggy as he put his straw hat back on. "But don't you ever threaten my friends." Without another word Luffy threw a punch.
His arm extended as he went to punch Buggy in the chest, stopping Finn in her tracks. She watched as the middle of his chest flew backwards, almost as if Luffy had cut a hole right in the middle.
Both shocked due to the chest hold and Luffy's arm extending the way it had, her focus was back as the chunk that came from Buggy went right back to his chest as if nothing had happened.
She acted quickly, ignoring the pain in her throat and her body screaming for air. Before Buggy could attack Luffy she jumped on his back, wrapping the chain around his neck much like he did to her.
Finn did no damage to Buggy, because as soon as the chain began to tighten around his neck, his head popped off.
She stumbled off of him and to the ground, crawling back as his head turned to look at her. "So you'd like to die first, huh? You're not even a part of their crew!"
Daggers rested in the spaces between his fingers, his body separating much like it had before.
Finn looked at him in shock, his eyes never leaving hers as she'd gotten the attention off of Luffy.
She took a deep breath, shutting her eyes for only a moment to think.
Then, as if her mind were playing tricks on her, she fell down. Down into the floor into nothingness, away from Buggy.
It lasted only a second, moving her from her spot on the floor to behind him. It was in a quick second, shocking everyone in the tent.
"She just teleported," Nami looked to Zoro. "She's ate a devil fruit."
"I think I gathered that the moment the room distorted." Zoro responded, not looking away from the scene.
Buggy, noticing she'd moved, turned to see her standing behind him. He began to move his arms in a circular motion, not at all hopeless that he'd lose.
"Chop chop... cannon!" He shouted as Finn flew back to the ground.
Just as his body parts began to fling in her direction, she was pulled back in a flash.
Luffy had pulled her back and away from everything, putting himself in harm's way as he began to dodge all of his body parts. He stopped as he landed on Buggy's chest, getting the upperhand for just a moment before he was knocked off harshly.
He immediately bounced back up, however, only for the daggers to knock his hat off of his head.
Luffy went to run for it but was knocked over by Buggy. His hand held him in a chokehold, the boy straining for both his hat and air.
Finn knew she needed to do something. She knew she needed to help in any way she can, as this trio had saved her numerous times.
Seeing the map somewhere nearby where nobody else noticed, she made her way over and grabbed it. "Buggy!" She shouted, catching his attention. She waved the map toward him, causing his face to turn to anger.
"Nami! The crates!" Luffy shouted as other body parts began flying toward Finn.
Calming her mind, she did the same thing she did only what felt like moments before. She moved from one side of the room to the other, causing a goose chase to ensue between her and Buggy.
She continued to do this as Nami and Luffy began fighting off Buggy's body parts, Nami hitting them into the open empty crates on one side of the room.
Zoro joined in, the three of them flinging Buggy's body into different crates as Finn did her best to stay away from him. Keeping the map safe was her job, and she was going to do her best to not disappoint.
She owed them for saving her, and this was the least she could do.
It wasn't long before most of Buggy's body was separated between the crates, Finn leaning against the wall. Her energy was low, and she felt a little dizzy from this newfound power of hers.
Luffy picked his hat up from the ground, eyes on the stab wound as Buggy cried out in frustration.
"What have you done to me?!"
"Cut you down to size," Luffy answered simply, smiling a proud smile at the clown.
"The One Piece will never be yours!" Buggy exclaimed, although nobody could take him seriously due to the fact that the only parts of him that were put together were his head, hands, and feet. "You're just a sad, lonely little boy wearing another man's hat!"
"I know exactly who I am," Luffy said. "I'm Monkey D. Luffy, and I'm going to be King of the Pirates."
Finn attempted to pay attention to the rest of the conversation, but her lack of energy was overwhelming. She slid down the wall as she held her hand to her chest, her eyelids growing droopy as she attempted to keep herself awake.
Luffy, noticing that they still needed the map began to look for it. He noticed Finn sat against the wall, holding the map in her hands.
Zoro walked over to her and bent down, causing her to look at him with tired eyes. "You didn't mention you could do that."
"I didn't know I could," She dryly responded, looking at him.
He stayed silent for a moment, thinking about what he wanted to say next.
"Here," She then said, holding the map out. "This is yours. As a thanks for, you know- saving me and all."
Zoro looked at the map. Instead of taking it he held his hand out, offering a hand to her.
Finn hesitantly took it, letting him pull her up. He pulled her with him to the middle of the room where Nami and Luffy stood, watching them in concern.
"Are you okay?" Nami asked Finn, her eyes on the map.
"Yeah, thanks." She muttered, holding the map out to Luffy. "I think this belongs to you guys." She repeated.
Luffy looked at it before looking at Nami, motioning his head in her direction. "Give it to Nami."
Finn obliged, having no need for whatever map it was. She didn't care for it, and only fought for it to help Zoro out because he'd helped her.
"You're giving this to me?" She asked, looking at Luffy in shock.
"You're the navigator." He said happily. After one more nod she took it, shoving it in her side bag.
"We should get out of this clown show," Zoro said as he looked around.
"There's still one more thing we have to do," Luffy said as he stopped Zoro.
They shared a look before separating, the four of them letting the prisoners Buggy was holding captive go. It was silent minus the sounds of the chains hitting the ground, Finn taking it slow so she could gain her energy back.
She already felt immensely better, despite how icky she'd felt only moments before.
"Are you our new captors?" One of the prisoners asked Luffy as he went to unchain them.
"What?" He asked, looking at him in confusion.
"You're a pirate, aren't you?"
"I'm a different kind of pirate," Luffy responded.
Finn, having helped with what she could decided to leave before Buggy's pirates could get ahold of her again. She knew she was no longer needed, and so she exited the tent smoothly, holding her side as she planned to find the quickest way out.
She didn't get far, however, as she was stopped by a familiar voice. "Where are you going?"
Turning, she looked to see Zoro, Luffy, and Nami standing at the entrance of the tent. She looked between them, unable to read any of their facial expressions.
"I-I just-" She stopped, not knowing what to say. "I don't know." She admitted, looking to the ground.
"You helped us, you know?" Luffy asked, smiling the innocent smile he usually does. "That makes you one of us."
"What?" She asked, looking up at him.
"Why don't you stick around for a bit?" He continued, looking at Nami and Zoro before back at Finn.
She looked from Luffy to Nami, who had a faint smile on her lips. She then looked to Zoro, who just looked away to prevent himself from influencing her response at all.
"Are you sure?" She asked softly, "I mean, you don't even know my name."
"Well what's your name?" Luffy asked, "I'm Luffy, and this is my crew; Nami and Zoro."
"Finley," Finn answered, looking at the three of them. "Finn." She then corrected herself, "I'm Finn."
"Well, Finn, what do you say? Would you like to join our crew?"
