CHAPTER NINE, girl meets the real world (part two)

The next morning, Mirabel woke up to the sound of her alarm going off, signaling it was time to start her day. She groaned, rolling over and burying her face in her pillow. She didn't want to get up yet. It was way too early for her liking. But she knew she had to get up, or else she would be late for school. With a heavy sigh, she sat up and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. She turned off her alarm as her phone buzzed with a notification. Her heart fluttered as she saw a good morning text from Lucas, followed by a heart.

hombre de mis sueños🧡
Good morning, baby. Can I pick you up for school today? ❤️

Mirabel couldn't help but smile like a lovesick idiot as she read his text, her heart racing in her chest.

mi sol💖
Morning, hombre de mis sueños 😉. Of course, you can pick me up,
let me know when you're here. Can't wait to see you ❤️

She typed out a reply, a blush tinting her cheeks. She couldn't believe how lucky she was to have such an amazing boyfriend. She quickly got ready for the day, eager to see him. Beatrix glances at her daughter with amusement as she walked down the stairs. She could see Mirabel was clearly was eager this morning which made her curious.

"You're in a good mood."

Mirabel jumps, startled by her mother's voice. She turns to face her with a sheepish grin, trying to contain her excitement. "Oh, um, yeah. I guess I am," She admits, her cheeks turning pink. "I'm just...happy, I guess."

Beatrix raises an eyebrow, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "Happy, huh? Is there a reason for that?"

Mirabel fidgets nervously under her mother's gaze, feeling a little embarrassed. She wasn't used to being the center of attention, especially not when it came to her love life. She had never really had a boyfriend before, so she didn't know what to say.

"Uh, no," She lies, averting her eyes from her mother's. "No reason." She said shyly as she walked further into the kitchen. She opened the fridge to look for breakfast.

"Mhm, sure." Beatrix chuckles softly, seeing right through her daughter's lie. "So, does this reason have anything to do with a certain handsome cowboy who happens to be your best friend, hmm?"

Mirabel blushes even harder at the mention of Lucas, her heart fluttering in her chest. How could her mother possibly know that? Was she really that obvious? "I-I don't know what you're talking about." She stammers, trying to sound nonchalant. But she could tell by the look on her mother's face that she wasn't fooling anyone. "You know we're best friends." She mumbled, closing the fridge and setting the milk on the kitchen island.

"Oh, I know you two are best friends," Beatrix says with a knowing smile, leaning against the kitchen counter and crossing her arms. "But sometimes, best friends make the best partners, don't they?"

Mirabel's cheeks turn even redder, and she can't help but smile shyly at her mother's words. "I-I don't know, mom," She stammers, feeling flustered under her mother's gaze. "I mean, Lucas and I...We're just...We're really close."

Beatrix chuckles softly, reaching out to gently squeeze Mirabel's hand. "I know, mija. I'm not blind. I can see how you two feel about each other." She reassures her daughter, her eyes shining with affection. "You don't have to hide it from me, you know."

Mirabel swallows thickly, her heart racing in her chest. This is a lot more difficult than she expected. She takes a deep breath, her nerves calming down a bit. "Um, Lucas and I..." She starts, her voice shaking slightly. "We're...We started dating."

Mirabel's voice trails off as she confesses, her nerves palpable in the air. Beatrix's eyes widen in surprise, a delighted smile spreading across her face. "Oh, mi amor, that's wonderful news!" she exclaims, pulling Mirabel into a tight hug. "I'm so happy for you!"

Mirabel hugs her mother back, feeling a wave of relief wash over her. She had been so worried about how her mother would react, but now that she knew she had her support, she felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. "Thanks, mom," She murmurs, her voice muffled against her mother's shoulder. "I was a little nervous about telling you."

"Well, you don't have to be, mija," Beatrix reassures her, gently rubbing her daughter's back. "You know I'm always here for you, no matter what. I'm so happy for you and Lucas. I've always known there was something special between you two, and now you finally have the chance to explore it. And I'm so proud of you for taking that leap of faith."

"Thanks, mom," Mirabel says with a soft smile, feeling a rush of gratitude for her mother's understanding and support. "I really appreciate it."

Beatrix pulls away from the hug, her eyes shining with love and pride as she gazes at her daughter. "Of course, mi amor," She says, gently cupping Mirabel's face in her hands. "You know I'll always be here for you, no matter what. I'm so happy you found someone who makes you happy. You deserve it."

Mirabel feels a warmth blossoming in her chest at her mother's words, her eyes filling with tears. She can't believe how lucky she is to have such a supportive and loving mother. "I love you, mom. Thank you." She whispers, hugging her mother tightly.

Beatrix smiles, her eyes welling up with tears. "I love you too, mi corazón," She murmurs, kissing her daughter's forehead. "I'm so proud of you. You're growing up to be an amazing young woman. You've made me and your father so proud of the person you are becoming."

Mirabel's heart swells with love and gratitude as she hugs her mother tightly, feeling a sense of warmth and comfort enveloping her. She couldn't have asked for a better support system than her loving family. With a contented sigh, she pulls away from the hug, wiping away her tears with a smile. "Thank you, mom," she says, her voice filled with emotion. "I don't know what I would do without you."

Beatrix smiles, her eyes twinkling with affection. "You'll never have to find out, mi amor," She says, wrapping an arm around Mirabel's shoulders. "I'll always be here for you, through thick and thin. That's what family is for."

Mirabel nods, feeling a sense of warmth and security wash over her. With her mother by her side, she knows she can face anything that comes her way. She takes a deep breath, feeling a renewed sense of confidence and determination coursing through her veins. "Thanks, mom," She says, her voice steady. "I love you."

"I love you too, mi corazón." Beatrix said pressing a kiss to her daughter's cheek. Mirabel grabs herself a plate and gets herself some bacon and eggs her mom had made for them. She thanks her mom for the breakfast before sitting at the kitchen island. Beatrix goes to prepare herself some tea while her daughter eats.

Mirabel savored the delicious breakfast her mother had prepared, feeling a sense of warmth and contentment spread through her as she ate. She couldn't help but smile as she thought about Lucas and the exciting new chapter of their relationship they were embarking on together. She felt grateful for her supportive family and wonderful friends, knowing that she had a strong support system to lean on as she navigated the ups and downs of life.

As she finished her breakfast, Mirabel's phone buzzed with a text from Lucas, letting her know that he was outside waiting to pick her up for school. She quickly grabbed her backpack and kissed her mom on the cheek before she hurried out the door, eager to see her boyfriend. Her heart fluttered at seeing him leaning against his truck, scrolling on his phone. But when he heard the front door open and close, he looked up with a warm smile.

"Hey, mi sol." He greets, putting his phone away as he pushes himself off the truck. He walks over to meet her half way and wraps his arms around her in a tight hug. Mirabel melts into his embrace, feeling a sense of comfort and happiness wash over her. She inhales his familiar scent, feeling a sense of peace settle over her as she rests her head against his chest. "How's your morning going so far?"

"Hey, hombre de mis sueños," She murmurs, her voice soft and affectionate. "I missed you. And it's better now that I see you." She replies, pulling away slightly to look up at him with a smile. "How about you? How's your morning been?"

Lucas returns her smile, his eyes shining with warmth as he gazes down at her. "It's been good," he says, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. "But it's better now that I get to see you." He reaches down and intertwines his fingers with hers, giving her hand a gentle squeeze. "I've been looking forward to seeing you all morning."

Mirabel's heart skips a beat at his words, feeling a rush of happiness surge through her. She squeezes his hand back, smiling up at him with adoration. "I've been looking forward to seeing you too, Lucas," She admits, her voice filled with emotion. "I never get tired of seeing you."

Lucas' heart melts at her words, a soft smile tugging at his lips. "You're too sweet, mi sol," He murmurs, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. "I'm a lucky man to have you."

Mirabel blushes at his words, her cheeks turning pink. "You're lucky?" She asks, raising an eyebrow. "I'm the lucky one, Lucas."

"You always know how to make me feel special and loved," She continues, her voice filled with sincerity. "I don't know what I did to deserve someone as amazing as you."

Lucas chuckles softly, his eyes sparkling with affection. "You don't have to do anything, Mirabel," He says, cupping her face in his hands. "You're perfect just the way you are. And I feel like the luckiest guy in the world to have you by my side."

Mirabel's heart swells with love as she gazes into Lucas' eyes, feeling overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible man standing in front of her. "I love you, Lucas." She whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.

"I love you too, mi sol," Lucas murmurs, pressing his forehead against hers. "More than words can say."

They stand there for a moment, lost in each other's embrace, before reluctantly pulling away and heading towards Lucas' truck. As they drive to school together, hand in hand, Mirabel can't help but feel like the luckiest girl in the world. She knows that with Lucas by her side, she can take on anything life throws her way. And as they pull into the school parking lot, she knows that no matter what challenges they face, they'll always have each other. And that's all she'll ever need.

Throughout the day, the couple found it harder to keep their relationship a secret. They were constantly stealing glances at each other, exchanging secret smiles and touches whenever they thought no one was looking. They tried to keep their distance, but it was impossible to stay away from each other. The day seemed to drag on endlessly as Mirabel and Lucas struggled to contain their excitement and affection for each other. Every moment apart felt like an eternity, and they longed for the opportunity to be together again, even if it was just for a brief moment.

During lunchtime, Mirabel and Lucas found themselves stealing away to a secluded corner of the school courtyard, desperate for a moment alone together. As they sat side by side on a bench, their fingers intertwined and their shoulders touching, they couldn't help but feel like they were in their own little world.

"I can't stop thinking about you," Lucas murmurs, his voice soft and filled with longing. "Every second apart feels like torture." He complained, gazing down at her with adoration.

"I know," Mirabel whispers, her voice trembling slightly. "I feel the same way." She reaches up and gently brushes a strand of hair away from his face, her heart racing in her chest as her eyes lock with his. "What if we just told everyone about us and stopped hiding?" She suggested, her voice barely above a whisper.

Lucas looks at her, his eyes wide with surprise. "Are you sure?" He asks, his voice filled with uncertainty. "I mean, I want to shout it from the rooftops that you're mine, but I don't want you to be uncomfortable."

Her heart flutters at his words, a warm feeling spreading through her chest. She smiles softly at him, her eyes shining with adoration. "Yes, I'm sure," She reassures him, gently cupping his face in her hands. "We don't have to hide anymore, Lucas. I want the whole world to know that you're my hombre de mis sueños."

At this, Lucas can't help but smile widely, his heart bursting with joy and pride. "I've been waiting for you to say that," Lucas admits, his voice filled with relief and happiness. "I want everyone to know how much you mean to me too, Mirabel. You're the most important person in my life, and I want everyone to know it." He surprised her when he suddenly cupped her face and pulled her in for a passionate kiss.

Mirabel was startled at first, but soon melted into the kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck as she lost herself in his embrace. As their kiss deepened, the world around them seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them lost in each other's embrace. Time seemed to stand still as they poured all of their love and passion into the kiss, savoring every moment they had together.

When they finally pulled away, breathless and flushed with excitement, they gazed into each other's eyes with a sense of wonder and awe. It felt like a weight had been lifted off their shoulders, and they were finally free to be themselves without fear or reservation.

"Wow," Mirabel murmurs, her voice filled with awe as she looks up at Lucas with a smile. "That was...Amazing."

Lucas smiles back at her, his eyes sparkling with happiness. "You're amazing." He said softly, brushing a stray hair away from her face. Her heart flutters at his words and the look in his eyes, feeling a rush of affection for the handsome man before her.

"You're not so bad yourself, cowboy." She teases, winking playfully at him. "I think I could get used to this." She admitted, leaning her head on his shoulder.

Lucas wraps his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close and kissing the top of her head. "Me too, mi sol." He agrees, his voice soft and full of love. "I think I could get used to spending every day like this with you." Mirabel's face burns hot at his words, her heart racing in her chest. She feels like she's dreaming, but the warmth of Lucas' embrace is too real to be anything but. She smiles to herself, feeling a sense of contentment and happiness wash over her.

"So," Lucas asks, breaking the silence. "Do you think you're ready to tell everyone about us?"

"Are you kidding?" Mirabel exclaims, her voice filled with excitement. Her face turns more red as she realized she had raised her voice a bit. Some students walking nearby turned their heads in their direction. She grew shy at their gazes and ducks her head in Lucas' shoulder. "I'm so ready." She murmured, her voice muffled against his shoulder.

Lucas chuckles softly, his hand on her shoulder squeezes it gently. "Okay then," He says, his voice filled with affection. His free hand came up to gently grip her chin and make her lift her head to look at him. Her heart skips a beat at the action and butterflies swarm in her stomach at seeing the love and adoration in his eyes. "Then let's do it. Let's tell everyone about us." He says, his voice soft but determined. "I want the whole world to know that you're mine, Mirabel. And I'm yours."

Her heart melts at his words, a wide smile spreading across her face. "Yours," She murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper. "I love the sound of that." She said shyly, biting her lower lip. She can't believe this is actually happening. After all these years of longing for Lucas, it finally seems like her dreams are coming true.

"So do I, mi sol." Lucas said softly, his voice soft and filled with affection. His heart was racing and he was excited. He had waited so long for this moment, and he was finally going to have Mirabel all to himself. No more hiding or sneaking around, just the two of them, openly and proudly expressing their love for each other. It was the start of something new and exciting, and he couldn't wait to see where it would take them.

In History class that day, Mirabel stood on the right side of the classroom with the rest of the class while Riley stood by herself on the left side of the classroom. Mirabel and Lucas stood by each other, their sides brushing against each other.

"So, what did you find out?" Mr. Matthews questioned as he stood in front of the class in one of the aisles. "Are people good or evil or what?"

"We miss Riley." Lucas admitted, his girlfriend and his friends nodding in agreement. Riley looked over at the group with surprise.

Mr. Matthews raises his eyebrows. "That's your opening statement?"

"Yes," Farkle nods. "And it's genius." "Why is that?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"Because the change in Riley's behavior has changed the world we live in." Smackle answered.

"And if we didn't notice the change, it would mean we are not possessed of a natural goodness that helps us recognize it in others." Farkle added.

"But yeah, we miss Riley." Mirabel chimes in, glancing at the brunette-haired girl with a small smile. "Since I moved here, I quickly noticed Riley was the heart of the group. She brought us all together and made us better people just by being herself. She has a pure and genuine heart, and she loves deeply. Without her, the world seems darker and less colorful."

Riley's heart swells with love and gratitude as she looks around the classroom at her friends, who are all smiling at her warmly. She can't believe how lucky she is to have such an amazing support system, even in times of difficulty. Maya scoffs, smiling at her friends. "I was gonna say that." Mirabel chuckled lightly and shook her head at the blonde.

"Zay, what have you found out?" Mr. Matthews inquired as he sat down on one of the desks.

"I noticed she ate my cookie." Zay replied.

Mr. Matthews chuckles lightly. "Do you forgive her for that?"

"No." Zay responded.

"And do you not forgive her because you're an evil person?" Mr. Matthews asked.

"No, I do not forgive her because I'm a good person who lost a good cookie." Zay answered.

"Well, do you think you could ever forgive her?" Mr. Matthews questioned.

"It's possible I might forgive her in time." Zay admitted.

"Why do you think that is?" Mr. Matthews smiled.

"'Cause I was raised right. I don't know who raise her." Zay sassily replied, making the group chuckle.

"Okay, why do you think you might forgive her?" Mr. Matthews continued.

"Because I know what she did isn't who she is. Sometimes good people do bad things." Zay explained.

"Thank you." Mr. Matthews smiles at him as he stands and faces the class. "So, can I hear from the other side?"

"This is a world of poverty, hunger, and climate change. And we know it and we tolerate it, and we have not changed it. So if the world creatures opportunities for us to do something good or something evil every day, and that world is full of poverty, hunger, and war...Then doesn't the state of the world answer the question? Doesn't it prove that the world is evil?" Riley asks, her voice shaking with emotion. "That we are evil?"

"You win, Riley." Mr. Matthews told her, gaining a surprised look from Riley.

"Oh, I didn't want to." Riley confessed.

"Excellent debate, Ms. Matthews." Mr. Matthews commented.

"It was, Riley." Farkle agrees. "You beat us."

"So, that's it? People are evil?" Riley frowned.

"Well, let's find out. Switch sides." Mr. Matthews told her.

Riley's eyes lit up and she smiles after taking a deep breath. "This is a world where children wake up at four in the morning to save starfish because something in them knows that it's the right thing to do. Why do we lose that? Where does that go? We are born with the choice of good or evil inside of us and as much fun as it was yesterday to do something bad, now it's today and I know that doing a bad thing isn't fun at all."

"She feels bad, man." Lucas told Zay.

"I don't care. I want my cookie back." Zay complained. Mirabel chuckled lightly, sending her friend a sympathetic look.

"Zay, I feel terrible." Riley admits, wiping some tears from her eyes. "But I know that you're going to forgive me. I know that you're a good person."

Zay scoffs. "Possibly. In time. In a thousand years."

"Now. I am asking for your forgiveness now." Riley insisted.

Zay then walks over to her and says, "No."

"So I wrote this cookie song." Riley started.

Zay's eyes widen and raises his hands in defense. "I forgive you!"

"Please really forgive me." Riley sighed.

"Ugh! Why?" Zay questioned, letting his hands fall to his sides.

"There are two voices in us. Both sides know how to present their point." Mr. Matthews chimed in.

"Which voice wins?" Maya asked.

"That is the only debate that matters. That's the only reason the sun shines in the middle of the night. There is good and there is evil. I found that if you choose good, the world is more than willing to help you out." Mr. Matthews explained.

"Zay, this is the fault of Sassy Haltertop. She sits on my shoulder and she told me to do a bad thing." Riley confessed.

"Yeah, I think everyone has that, but why did you listen?" Zay asked her.

"Because I never did before." Riley replied.

"There are two sides. You consider both, and you decide who you are." Mr. Matthews continued.

"Look, Riley I know who sits on your other shoulder, and Sassy Haltertop doesn't stand a chance against you." Zay said softly.

Riley's eyes lit up as she looks hopeful. "So, you forgive me?"

"Yes, I do." Zay nods, smiling a little. "Because I know who you really are. So I forgive you right now."

"Thank you." Riley smiles and hugs him. Zay hugs her back and smiles. "Flour and sugar and butter and love." As Riley started singing, Zay looks at her weirdly. "That makes a cookie, I'm sorry I tookie. Forgive me!"

"Let go, woman!" Zay grumbled and tried to get out of her grasp as the others watched with amusement.

"No, you need to sing back!" RIley sang dramatically, pulling him out to the hallway.

"Lucas!" Zay shouted for help and the others chuckled and laughed at the situation that was going on.

"You gotta sing, man." Luas chuckled as he intertwined his hand with Mirabel's. Her heart fluttered and she smiled widely at him.

"Wait, hold on," Maya speaks up after noticing the interaction between them. "Why are you two holding hands? Did something happen between you two?" She questioned, raising an eyebrow.

Lucas and Mirabel exchange glances, a smile appearing on their faces. They nod and turn back to the others, their hands still intertwined. "We have an announcement to make," Lucas said. "Mirabel and I are dating." The rest of the group gasped in surprise, their faces breaking out into smiles as they realize what Lucas just said.

Maya's eyes widens a smile forming on her face. "Seriously?" She asks, her voice filled with excitement. "It's about time! Congratulations!"

"Yeah, that's great, guys." Farkle agrees, smiling at his friends. "I'm glad you guys finally decided to make things official."

"It's definitely a relief." Lucas agreed, a smile forming on his face as he looks at his girlfriend, who smiles back at him lovingly. His heart fluttered at the gaze, feeling a rush of love for the beautiful girl standing beside him.

"Yeah, it is." Mirabel agreed, a smile forming on her face. She was so happy that they could finally be open about their relationship and share their happiness with their friends. It felt like a weight had been lifted off their shoulders, and she couldn't wait to see where their journey together would take them.
