CHAPTER FOUR, ski lodge

Mirabel and her family went to the Mount Sun Lodge often, they were regulars at this point. It was fun being in a whole different environment for a change. Even though she grew up on a ranch and lived in the middle of nowhere, she loved to be around people and go to exciting places. And now that it was fall, the leaves were changing and the scenery was so beautiful. She loved watching the leaves change colors. And being with her family.

Her mom, Beatrix, was a businesswoman. She owned a very successful land development company, and was the most hard working and responsible person Mirabel knew. Her dad, Mateo, was a rancher, and loved it. The ranch had been given to him from his dad and had been passed down from generations. It had always been their family's business and was something he cherished. So that's why he chose to stay in Texas when his wife had to move to New York. Mirabel had the choice whether if she wanted to live with her dad or her mom. While she will always love her home town, she wanted to go somewhere different and see what the city life was like.

Mirabel loved being in New York. Sure it was different, and at first it was hard, but she managed to fit right in. She and her mom had only been in New York for a few weeks and were still settling in. Now she and her parents were at Mount Sun Lodge for a family vacation. Mirabel had been taking a walk on her own while her parents were talking to a new couple they met at the lodge. Mirabel had her skateboard with her and often used it on the trail. She loved skateboarding ever since she was little. She had seen pictures of her dad skateboarding in a scrapbook her mom had made and she was curious about it so her dad offered to teach her.

She got her own skateboard when she turned 10 and has been using it and loving it since then. She often used her skateboard on the trails at the ranch back in Texas, and even in New York she has taken her skateboard and her board around and had so much fun with it. Mirabel loved the trail that she was currently on, it was her favorite one. It had beautiful scenery, and sometimes she would just sit and look out and enjoy the view. She was getting closer to the lodge and she knew this because she could see the lodge up ahead. She paused though when she suddenly heard a thud nearby. She stopped her skateboard, kicking it up with her foot, and looked around. She noticed a boy nearby and he had kicked a tree out of anger it looked like. She had to admit the back of him looked familiar to her, but she couldn't figure out why.

She raises her eyebrows, wondering why he was kicking the tree. "What did the poor tree do to you?" She asked with a small chuckle.

The boy was startled by her voice and turned to face her. And that's when Mirabel saw his face and realized who it was. "Lucas?" She breathed out, her eyes widening and she felt her grip loosen on her skateboard out of shock. She knew it was Lucas Friar. He looked a bit older and his hair was shorter. But it was Lucas Friar, there was no denying it. His eyes widen at seeing her and he looked like he was in disbelief. She didn't blame him, she was in disbelief too. She hadn't seen him in person since he and his friends had gone to Texas when his friends signed him up for riding Tombstone the bull.

"Mirabel." He spoke in a quiet tone, a small smile forming on his face and his eyes were shining. He knew it was her. The same shoulder length brown hair, the same hazel eyes, the same warm smile, and the same skateboard. He didn't even realize his feet were taking him to her until he stood in front of her. It was a weird coincidence that they would both end up here at the same time, and it was the first time he was truly thankful for coincidences.

He smiles brightly, his eyes lighting up. "Hi."

She couldn't stop herself from smiling too. "Hey." She breathed out, looking up at him. She had forgotten how tall he was. He had grown so much since they had last seen each other. And he had changed a bit, not completely. But he still had the same bright smile and the same green eyes.

"What are you doing here?" He asked curiously. He hadn't seen her in so long and just couldn't believe his luck. She was standing right in front of him.

"Me and my parents are here for a vacation. What about you?" She inquired, tilting her head to the side slightly.

"School trip. But I'm pretty sure today is our last day here. We're heading back tomorrow morning." He answered, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand. He didn't want to have to leave her so soon. Not again.

"Oh." She mutters, her heart sinking a bit. She and her family had just arrived yesterday and she was supposed to be here for the next three days. She was sad that he would be leaving so soon, but she was glad that she had gotten to see him again. "I just got here yesterday."

"Oh." He replied quietly, mirroring her tone, his lips forming into a frown. He wanted to see her more. He missed her so much and he hated having to leave her. He really did hate coincidences sometimes.

"What are you doing anyways? Why were you kicking the tree? What kind of thing did the tree do to deserve that punishment?" She questioned, a teasing smile on her face.

He chuckles softly, his lips curling up into a smile. "Oh, that. I was frustrated. So I kicked the tree. Not the smartest idea 'cause now my foot hurts. And I'm kinda glad you showed up." He admitted.

"Really?" She asks, raising her eyebrows and tilting her head. "Why is that?" She added, her heart fluttering at the fact that he said he was glad she showed up.

He looks at her, his eyes meeting hers and his smile widens. "Cause if you didn't, I wouldn't have gotten the chance to do this." He said. He wrapped his arms around her waist, hugging her tightly, pulling her close. A small giggle left her lips and she didn't hesitate to drop her board and hug him back, wrapping her arms around his neck. She felt her body relax at his embrace. She felt her heart beating faster and her stomach flutter with butterflies. She missed him so much. It was good to finally see him again. She had missed his hugs. She always loved his hugs.

"I've missed you, cowboy." She murmured into his chest.

He smiles, his arms tightening around her waist. He didn't know why but unlike it when Maya called him names, he loved it when Mirabel did. He rested his chin on the top of her head and closes his eyes. "I've missed you too, Bel. So much."

She felt his chin on her head and she smiled softly. She missed hearing the nickname he had given her. No one else ever called her Bel. That was her special nickname, reserved for Lucas. And she liked it that way.

They pull apart after a few moments, not wanting to let each other go. "So, wanna take a walk with me?" He offered, looking at her with a warm smile.

"Literally just finished one." She replies, chuckling a little. "But sure, I would love to. Where you headed?" She asked, picking up her board and holding it.

"Nowhere." He admits with a shrug. "Just wanna spend more time with you."

She couldn't help the soft smile that appeared on her face. She was glad to be spending more time with him too. Even though it would only be for a little bit. "Then let's go."

He nods his head and they start walking together. They were silent at first, neither really knowing what to say. It was nice though. They were comfortable with each other. It was something she loved about their friendship. They didn't need words, just being together was enough.

"So, how is everything back home?" Lucas asked with a small smile.

"Everything is still going good. And actually, my mom and I moved to New York because of her job promotion." She confesses. "So maybe we'll be able to see each other more."

Lucas' eyes lit up at that and he grins. He was relieved he didn't have to be apart from her for that long anymore. "Yeah, I hope so too, Bel."

"Wanna tell me why you were frustrated enough to kick that poor tree? What did it ever do to you?" Mirabel teased with a grin, nudging his shoulder with hers.

He lets out a small laugh and shakes his head. "It's not even about the tree." He said, nudging her shoulder back with his. "It's just this love triangle thing with Riley and Maya-"

"That's still going on? The last time we saw each other when you guys came to Texas it was still happening." Mirabel said with surprise. She figured that they would have it figured out by now.

"I know. Believe me, I wish it was done. Honestly, I was outside kicking that tree because I was jealous. There's this boy that works here at the counter, he and Riley talked all last night." Lucas explains, shaking his head and sighing.

Mirabel raises her eyebrows. "You mean the guy who works the front desk? The cute brown haired one?" She asked.

Lucas narrows his eyes at her. "Don't tell me you like him too."

Mirabel chuckles and shrugs. "Just saying the truth, he is cute. His name is Ethan. He's honestly really nice, we've become good friends over the many times me and my parents come here. So you're jealous because Riley seemed to be getting close with another boy?" She questioned, trying to understand everything that was going on with him.

"Yep." Lucas replied, putting his hands in the pockets of his denim jacket.

"Okay..." Mirabel slowly nods. "So do you still like Maya romantically?" She raises her eyebrows when he hesitated. "You don't."

"How do you know that?" Lucas raised his eyebrows.

"I've known you long enough to be able to read you like an open book." Mirabel smirks, looking at him with a smug expression. "But that's not the point, so you don't like Maya that way anymore. That's okay, that's a good thing. Now the love triangle can stop and you can be with Riley." She pauses when she saw the uncertain look on his face. "Or not be with her?" She said with confusion. "You don't wanna be with Riley?"

"I'm not for sure anymore." Lucas confessed, staring at the ground as he kicked a small rock. When he and Mirabel had reunited, something changed in him. He felt different. Like he had some sort of realization, he didn't know what it was. But he felt different. He felt this the last time they were reunited in Texas, but he just ignored it and pushed those feelings away. He didn't think it was anything to worry about. And he was wrong. It wasn't nothing. He couldn't deny these feelings he had. And he didn't know what to do about them.

"Okay...Well, you don't have to have everything figured out. It's not easy." Mirabel said, looking at him with a sympathetic smile. "And if you need to talk about it more, I'm here."

"Thanks, Bel. That means a lot." Lucas smiles softly, giving her a side hug. He always appreciated her advice, and was glad she was there for him. "I've missed you." He admitted once more.

She returns the smile, resting her head on his shoulder, her arm wrapping around his waist. "I've missed you too, Lucas."

They continued walking, the conversation shifting and the two talked about other things. Catching up on what they missed. Mirabel was telling him all about her first couple weeks in New York, and how her and her mom were adjusting. Lucas updated her on what had been going on in his life beside the love triangle. They talked about how school had been and just caught up with each other. And for a while, it felt like no time had passed. Like they hadn't been separated. They were happy, and just enjoying being in each other's presence.

****

Mirabel and Lucas had been hanging out, sitting on a bench on the trail. They had been catching up on their lives and were talking about anything and everything.

"So how's school? You haven't got suspended yet have you?" She asked in concern. She remembered the first time he got suspended, she had been so worried. He had defended and protected their close friend Zay, who had gotten into some trouble. Lucas had always been protective of his friends.

"No, thank goodness." Lucas says, sighing in relief. "Oh, and Zay had transferred to the school in New York too."

"Oh, cool! That's great, I'll be able to see you both a lot more then." Mirabel smiles, happy that she would be able to see their friend at school. "But I'm relieved you haven't gotten suspended again. It was hard being without you, the others were there but it just wasn't the same."

"Same here, Bel. You have no idea how much I missed you." He admitted, looking over at her with a fond expression.

"I missed you too, Lucas." She smiled, nudging his shoulder. He nudged her shoulder back and they both laugh softly.

"You still remember our handshake?" Lucas asked curiously. The two had made a handshake when they were younger. It was a special one just for them.

"Of course! How could I forget?" She smirked, holding her hand up.

He grins and holds his hand up, and they start doing the handshake. After they finish the handshake, they laugh. And for the rest of the afternoon, they talk and catch up. They were having such a good time and neither wanted to have to leave each other.

"I had a really good time, I'm glad we were able to see each other again." Mirabel said, smiling fondly.

"I had a great time too. It was so good to see you again, Bel. I can't wait to see you in New York. I'm sure the others will be excited you're moving there too." Lucas admitted with a smile.

"And I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again. Especially you." Mirabel grinned, nudging his shoulder playfully.

He chuckles and nudges her shoulder back. "So am I."

The two look at each other and stare for a moment, neither saying anything. Then without a word, Mirabel leans in and places a soft kiss on his cheek. Lucas felt his cheeks grow warm at the gesture and he knew he was blushing. He didn't say anything though, he didn't need to.

"I'll see you in New York." Mirabel smiled softly, taking her skateboard in her hand as she stood.

"Yeah, I'll see you in New York, Bel." Lucas nodded, a fond smile appearing on his face.

With that, Mirabel turned and started skating away. Lucas watched her with a soft expression, his heart skipping a beat. He didn't know what had happened, but he did know one thing. His feelings for her weren't platonic anymore. They hadn't been since the day they reunited in Texas. Now he didn't have feelings for Maya, but he still had feelings for Riley and now Mirabel. He had no idea what to do, and he wished there was an answer. He hoped he will figure it out soon.

A/N i love lucas & mirabel so much you guys
