CHAPTER FIVE, welcome to new york
After Lucas and his friends got back to New York, Lucas found out that Riley didn't like him romantically anymore and that she had started having feelings for Evan. Lucas had to admit he was relieved because his feelings for her had been fading and the feelings for Mirabel kept growing.
"You don't seem too upset about Riley and Evan. Are you okay, Huckleberry?" Maya asked as the two of them walked into Topanga's.
"I'm fine, just a lot on my mind. That's all." He replied with a shrug. It was true, he had a lot on his mind. Ever since seeing Mirabel again, his feelings had been all over the place. And now that Riley was talking more with Evan and his feelings for Riley went away, his feelings for Mirabel came back full force. But he didn't know how he would tell her. They had only been reunited recently. What if he told her and she rejected him and they lost touch again? He didn't want that. He wanted to keep his friendship with her. It was just so confusing.
Maya notices the distant look in his eyes and wondered what was going through his mind. She wondered if it had to do with Mirabel. She raises her eyebrows and nudges him. "Let me guess, Mirabel is on your mind?" She teases. She saw the surprised look on his face and she couldn't help but smirk. "Come on, Huckleberry, I'm not an idiot...I mean, okay, I'm not a genius but I'm not blind." She states. "It's obvious that you have a thing for her." She added, sitting down at the counter, Lucas following suit.
"It is?" He asked nervously, looking at her with wide eyes. Was it really that obvious? If it was then Mirabel had probably already figured it out. And that terrified him. He was afraid that she would reject him and it would mess up their friendship.
Maya shrugs. "Maybe not to her, but I can see it. I think everyone can. I've known you've had a crush on her since the first time you saw her again when we went to Texas."
Lucas glances at her with surprise. "Really?" He asked. He didn't think his feelings were so obvious. Apparently, they were, because Maya had picked up on them. Maybe everyone had picked up on them. He hoped Mirabel didn't and if she did that she felt the same.
Maya nods. "Yep, I noticed how your whole demeanor changed. You were just happier and more comfortable being yourself around her. So why are you confused now? She's finally gonna be here permanently." She pointed out.
"Because I don't want to mess up our friendship. What if I tell her and she doesn't feel the same way and rejects me and we never speak again?" Lucas admits, feeling his heart pounding in his chest. It would crush him. He wouldn't be able to take it. "I don't want to lose her again. It was hard enough the first time, I don't think I would be able to handle losing her again."
Maya could hear the vulnerability in his voice and she softens. "I don't think you have anything to worry about. You shouldn't worry about the 'what if's. You should just go for it and tell her how you feel. Or you're gonna miss your chance if you don't."
Lucas sighs, running a hand through his hair. He hated that he was so conflicted and confused. But Maya was right. He should just tell her and get it over with. It would be better to have his heart broken now rather than later. Or maybe he would get lucky and she would feel the same way and they would get together. He could only hope. "You're right. Thanks, Maya."
Maya smirks. "Of course, I'm right. I'm always right. But honestly, I'm relieved I'm not in your situation because that sounds stressful. But you gotta follow your heart, Sundance. You've always been good at that." Maya shrugged.
Lucas nods his head and gives her a small smile. "Thanks, I appreciate it, Maya. I'm honestly surprised you were willing to talk to me about this. And you didn't pour a smoothie over my head." He joked.
"Gotta be honest, I'm real tempted to do it 'cause you're such a nice guy." Maya grumbles. "But you're welcome, I'm glad I could help. Besides, I'm tired of the triangle drama so I'm so glad that's done with. It's good that we're all friends now."
"Yeah, it is. I'm glad everything is resolved and we can just be friends now." He said, smiling slightly. It was good that the love triangle was finally over. Now he could focus on the more important things, like telling Mirabel how he felt. Getting the courage to actually tell her was something else. It was a difficult task, but he would manage. He had to. He couldn't keep holding these feelings in. He had to let her know. Or he would regret it for the rest of his life.
When the rest of their friends join them, they get some drinks and move back over to their usual spot. He found himself glancing at the door or checking his phone. Mirabel had said she would text him when she and her parents got back and when she was on her way to Topanga's.
"Are we boring you, Huckleberry?" Maya asked teasingly.
Lucas looked at her and gave her a small smile. "Sorry, just got a lot on my mind. That's all."
Riley's eyes lit up as she realized why he kept looking at the door. "Oh! Is Mirabel finally coming today? It's been a few days."
"Yeah, I think so. She should be here soon." Lucas smiled, nodding his head. He felt his cheeks warm and knew he was blushing. He didn't try to hide it, he didn't care.
"Oh, wait, Mirabel lives here now?" Zay questions, looking surprised but then he smiled. "That's great. I missed her."
"Yeah, and she'll be joining us in school on Monday. I can't wait to see her again." Lucas admitted.
"Even though you recently saw her a few days ago." Farkle chuckled.
"Hey, I can't help it. I really missed her." Lucas shrugged, not bothering to hide his grin. He didn't care, he was happy and was going to see her again.
"He has it bad." Maya whispered to the others, chuckling along with them.
"I think it's so sweet." Riley grins. "You guys are so cute. I can't wait until you two end up together."
"Yeah, me either." Lucas said softly, not bothering to correct her. He hoped that Mirabel felt the same way and they would end up together. But there were only so many chances. He would have to make his move soon. If he wanted them to be together, he had to take the risk.
****
About an hour later, the bell to Topanga's chimed. The friends had been sitting at a table, talking about whatever that came to mind. Lucas had checked his phone a few times before the bell rang and saw that Mirabel had said she and her parents were now in New York and she would be at Topanga's soon. He glanced over at the door hopefully, and his face lit up when he saw her walk inside. Mirabel held her skateboard in her hand, she wore a dark denim jacket over a red tank top with some black jeans and she wore dark vans. Lucas thought she looked beautiful, though she always looked beautiful to him. She grinned as she saw the familiar group of friends, her gaze lingering on Lucas longer than the others. His heart pounded when he noticed that, his face turning red.
"Mirabel! Welcome to New York!" Riley exclaims excitedly, getting out of her seat and going over to the brunette, hugging her tightly. "It's so good to see you!"
Mirabel stumbles back a bit from the sudden embrace, but hugs Riley back, smiling brightly. "It's great to see you too, Riles. And all of you." She added, looking at the others with a smile, her smile widening when they smiled back at her.
"Well, look who finally decided to show up." Maya said teasingly, grinning. "You know, Huckleberry has been waiting impatiently for you to get here. We couldn't keep him occupied enough apparently, he was just waiting by the door like a lost puppy." She added, smirking at Lucas.
Lucas rolls his eyes and gets out of his seat, walking over to the girls. "That's not true, I wasn't waiting by the door the entire time. Don't listen to her." He said, nudging Maya and earning a smirk from the blonde. He looks at Mirabel, his green eyes meeting her brown eyes and they share a soft smile.
"But you did check your phone basically the whole time." Zay adds in a teasing voice. "And when you weren't checking your phone, you were glancing over at the door."
"Oh, so he was waiting like a lost puppy. Got it." Mirabel laughs, smirking slightly as she tries to ignore her heart fluttering at the fact he was waiting for her. Lucas' cheeks flush and he looks down, feeling a little embarrassed. He wasn't a lost puppy, he was just excited. He was happy that she was finally here. Mirabel's laughter fades and she looks at him, her gaze softening. "I'm kidding, cowboy. It's adorable." She assured, putting a hand on his arm and gently squeezing it.
Lucas felt his cheeks burn even more as his heart fluttered and he smiled sheepishly at her. "Right...Uh, how was the flight?" He asked, trying to change the subject so he wouldn't be as embarrassed.
"It was good. Long. But it was worth it. I never really liked flying." Mirabel confesses, shrugging slightly. "I'm just glad we're finally here. So, Riley, this is your mom's place? It looks great and smells good. I can't wait to get a drink." She added, looking over at Riley with a grin.
Riley beams at her. "It is, I'm glad you like it. We come here a lot, we normally do our homework here. So now that you're here, you can join us!"
"Sounds great." Mirabel said with a nod, smiling at her. "So, did I miss anything exciting? Other than Lucas waiting impatiently for me." She smirked, her eyes dancing with amusement as she spared a side glance at Lucas. He huffed and looked away, his cheeks burning with embarassment.
"Nah, not really." Maya shrugs. "Well, if you count Riley and Evan getting together." She grinned at Riley, who blushed and sent her a small glare.
"We're not together yet! We're just talking." Riley murmured shyly, going back over to her seat to sit down.
"Uh huh, whatever you say, Riles." Maya chuckled.
"Oh, that's awesome. I'm happy for you guys." Mirabel smiles at Riley. "You two would be great together. I could tell he really liked you."
Riley looks hopeful at hearing that. "You think so?" She asked, her eyes bright.
"Absolutely." Mirabel nods, smiling reassuringly. She glances over at the front counter, deciding on getting something to drink. "Well, I'm gonna go get a drink real quick. Anyone got any suggestions?" She asked, looking over at the group.
"I'll go with you. I need a refill anyway." Lucas admitted, taking his empty cup as he walked over to her. He partly said this to spend more time with her. But also because he wanted another drink, he didn't realize how quickly he had finished it.
Mirabel smiles softly at him, nodding her head. "Okay, lead the way, cowboy."
Lucas nods and heads to the front counter with her, their shoulders brushing as they walked together. Mirabel felt her heart speed up slightly and she could feel butterflies in her stomach. She tried to ignore the fluttering feelings, but it was difficult. The more time she spent with him, the more she would feel her heart beating rapidly and her cheeks warming. It was confusing and scary. But at the same time, it felt natural and familiar. It was weird, but also nice.
"Hey, Lucas." Katy greets, smiling brightly at the two. Her gaze then went to Mirabel with a smile. "Hi, you must be Mirabel! It's so great to finally meet you. I'm Maya's mother, Katy." She said, extending her hand to the brunette.
Mirabel smiles and shakes her hand. "It's great to meet you too. Thank you for letting me hang out with you guys. I appreciate it."
"You're welcome, hon. And any friend of Lucas' is a friend of ours." Katy replies, giving her a reassuring smile. "So, what can I get for ya?"
Mirabel's eyes scanned over the menu, her eyebrows furrowing slightly as she was deciding what to get. She then glances over at Lucas curiously. "What are you getting?"
"A caramel macchiato." Lucas replies, looking over at her. "I'm kinda addicted to them. I blame you for that." He chuckled. Mirabel had introduced him to the drink and now he couldn't stop getting them. They were really good.
Mirabel raises her eyebrows, looking amused. "Oh, is that right? Well, maybe you should try something else. I mean, there are plenty of options. You don't always have to get a caramel macchiato."
"Yeah, but they're really good." Lucas argued, pouting slightly. He wasn't ready to move on from the drink. Plus they reminded him of her. When he had been away from her and would be at a coffee shop, he would always order a caramel macchiato. It made him feel closer to her, even though she wasn't actually there.
Mirabel couldn't help but smile softly at his reaction, her heart fluttering slightly. "Fine, I'll let you keep getting a caramel macchiato." She said, raising her hands in mock surrender.
Lucas nods, smirking slightly. "Thank you."
"So, what'll it be, hon?" Katy asked, looking at Mirabel with a smile.
"I'll also have a caramel macchiato. I haven't had one in a while and now I want one." Mirabel replied, giving the older woman a grateful smile. She then reached for her purse, getting her wallet out to pay, but was stopped by Lucas' hand gently grasping her wrist. She glances over at him in surprise, her heart pounding.
"It's on me, don't worry about it, Bel." Lucas told her, giving her a small smile.
"You don't have to do that, I can get it." Mirabel insisted, shaking her head.
"I want to." Lucas said softly, sending her a fond smile.
Mirabel's breath hitched and her heart fluttered at his gentle voice and his hand was still grasping her wrist. It wasn't a harsh grasp, he was being gentle and his touch was warm and comforting. "Okay." She mumbled, feeling her cheeks burn.
Lucas smiles, his green eyes shining as he let go of her wrist. He got his wallet out and paid for the drinks. Mirabel put her wallet back in her purse and then the two stepped off to the side, waiting for their drinks. Katy smiled softly at the two as she went to go make the drinks with Topanga. She was glad they had found their way back to each other. They were clearly close, she could see it in their body language. She knew that they had a lot of history and had missed each other. They were clearly very close, which wasn't surprising considering everything that happened between them. They had grown up together, spent most of their childhood and teenage years in Texas. Now, they were in New York and both teenagers. Things had definitely changed, but she could see that they had a special connection and that they would do anything for each other.
After getting their drinks, Lucas and Mirabel joined their friends at their table, sitting next to each other. They talked for a while about different topics and just caught up. Mirabel enjoyed listening to them and was glad she was able to finally be here. She felt more comfortable and relaxed now that she was here, even though she would be starting school again on Monday. She would have to deal with that later. Right now, she was going to enjoy her time with her friends and not worry about it. She was glad they accepted her and was happy to be spending time with them.
She noticed that Lucas kept stealing glances at her, his green eyes were warm and filled with adoration. It made her heart race and her cheeks heat up. She hoped the others hadn't noticed, but they seemed too engrossed in their conversation. But the looks he gave her were filled with affection and warmth, his eyes shining brightly. He seemed to only look at her with so much adoration and care, it was obvious that he cared about her a lot. She felt the same about him, she couldn't help but glance at him and her heart would flutter. It was hard to focus on anything else when she was around him, he was like a magnet. And she was drawn to him.
Soon enough the others had decided to leave, but Lucas and Mirabel wanted to hang out more. They weren't ready to leave each other yet, so they sat in the coffee shop. Lucas glanced at her, his eyes lingering on her as she drank her iced down caramel macchiato. He could see her brown eyes twinkling in delight, her pink lips curved into a smile. Her dark hair was up in a high ponytail, a few strands framing her face. She was beautiful. He could stare at her all day.
"You're staring." Mirabel stated, not bothering to look over at him as she took another sip of her drink. It made her feel giddy that he kept staring at her, her heart racing. It was hard not to smile, especially since his eyes were warm and loving. She wondered what was going through his mind.
Lucas chuckles softly, blushing. He didn't look away. "Sorry, it's hard not to. You're beautiful, Bel." He said softly. He didn't even try to hide his affection for her, it was obvious in his eyes and the tone of his voice. He loved her. He hoped she could see that.
Mirabel's eyes widened, her cheeks burning and her heart skipped a beat. She finally glances at him, her gaze softening. "Thank you, Lu." She mumbles, looking shy. "You're not so bad yourself, cowboy."
"Not so bad, huh?" Lucas smirks slightly, his eyes shining. "Well, thank you."
Mirabel smiles and her gaze lingers on him. She felt a tug in her chest and her heart thudded. Her stomach did a flip and her body felt like it was burning up. "You're welcome, Lu. You're always handsome." She blurted out before she could stop herself. She blushed even more and looked down, her fingers tracing along the lid of her drink.
Lucas felt his face grow warmer and his heart fluttered. His smirk falters and turns into a shy smile. He clears his throat, trying to control his breathing. He knew his cheeks were flushed. "Thanks."
The two stay silent for a while, neither knowing what to say. There was a lot on their minds, a lot of things they wanted to say. But neither of them said anything, both feeling shy and nervous. Both felt like they were burning up, their hearts pounding rapidly. Mirabel cleared her throat and forced herself to look away when her phone buzzed, breaking the silence between them. She took her phone out of her pocket and read the message.
She sighs. "I'm sorry, I have to get home. I still have quite a bit to unpack and my mom wants me home." She explained, frowning apologetically.
"It's okay, I understand." Lucas nods, forcing himself to smile. He was disappointed, but he understood. She needed to settle into her new home. He just wished he had more time with her. "Let me walk you." He added, his green eyes soft.
"You don't have to-" She started, but was cut off by Lucas' gentle look. She swallows hard and her heart thuds. "Okay." She agreed, smiling slightly.
The two left the coffee shop, saying goodbye to Topanga and Katy. They started walking in a comfortable silence. Lucas kept glancing at Mirabel, his gaze filled with adoration. He didn't think he could stop staring. She was just so beautiful. His heart was racing and his palms were sweat. His heart thudded as he suddenly got a burst of confidence, his hand reaching over to grasp her smaller one.
Mirabel's eyes widen in surprise and her breath hitched, her heart skipping a beat and her face was red. Her eyes dart down to their hands, intertwined. She squeezed his hand gently, smiling shyly. Their hands fit together perfectly, it felt natural. His hand was warm and gentle. It was comforting. She glanced at him, her heart pounding. His cheeks were flushed and his green eyes were warm and kind. His blonde hair looked so soft and messy, she had to resist the urge to run her hand through it.
Soon enough they reached her house, their hands still intertwined. Lucas' heart was racing and he felt his nerves bubbling up. He didn't want to leave her. "I'll text you later." He promised, looking into her brown eyes.
Mirabel nods, smiling shyly. "Sounds great, cowboy."
They lingered there, their hands still intertwined and their bodies facing each other. Lucas was struggling to contain his emotions, his heart was beating fast and his nerves were bubbling. He swallows hard and licks his dry lips. "Hey, Bel?" He spoke softly.
"Yeah, Lucas?" Mirabel's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but her brown eyes were warm and inviting. She was waiting patiently for him. Her heart was racing, her face was red and her stomach was doing flips. She was nervous, but excited. She could feel the tension and she had no idea what was going on, but she had a feeling that it was a good thing.
Lucas hesitates, his breath hitching. His grip on her hand tightens, not painfully, but just enough for him to feel her. To make sure she was really there and this wasn't a dream. "I...I-"
"Mirabel! Lucas! I thought I heard voices." Came the voice of Mirabel's mother. Lucas felt a little disappointed that she interrupted him, but also a little relieved. He was nervous, but he would get another chance. Hopefully. He steps to the side, reluctantly pulling his hand away from hers. His heart thudded as her eyes never left his, his cheeks flushed.
Mirabel had to admit she felt disappointed, her heart ached at the loss of contact and her hand felt cold without his. But she pushed those feelings down and smiles softly at her mother. "Hi, mama. Lucas had just walked me home from Topanga's."
"That's sweet of you, Lucas." Beatrix said softly, smiling at Lucas. "Thank you for doing that. Why don't you come inside? I have some cookies I made."
"Uh, I would love to, but I should probably get home. My mom is probably waiting for me." Lucas lied, he really wanted to stay longer, but his nerves were bubbling up again and he wanted to have a clear head. He would rather not embarrass himself.
"Oh, well alright then. Maybe another time. You're always welcome." Beatrix said, still smiling.
"Thank you, Mrs. Flores." Lucas smiles gratefully. He then turns to Mirabel, his green eyes shining. "I'll see you later, Bel. Have a good rest of your night."
"You too, Lu." Mirabel said softly, her brown eyes soft. She watched him walk away before she turned to walk up the steps to the porch.
"What's wrong, mija?" Beatrix asked, looking concerned. She could see her daughter looked a little sad.
Mirabel smiles reassuringly at her. "Nothing, mama. I'm fine."
"Are you sure? I hope I didn't ruin anything." Beatrix frowned, looking worried.
Mirabel chuckles and shakes her head. "No, you didn't ruin anything. We were just talking."
"Talking, huh? Is that all you were doing?" Beatrix teased, raising an eyebrow.
Mirabel's face grew redder and she huffs, shaking her head. "Mama!"
Beatrix chuckles. "Alright, alright. Sorry, mija. But it was pretty obvious. I saw the way you were looking at each other."
Mirabel bites her bottom lip, feeling her cheeks burn. Her heart pounded and butterflies fluttered in her stomach. "I'm going to finish unpacking." She muttered as she walked inside the house past her mother. Beatrix watched as her daughter went upstairs, a smile on her face. It was obvious that Mirabel had a crush.
A/N ugh mirabel & lucas are so adorable
