CHAPTER FIFTEEN, early birthday surprise

Mirabel was currently on her balcony, curled up on one of the chairs with a fluffy blanket and a good book. The sun was setting low on the horizon, painting the sky in a dazzling array of hues. She was wearing a comfy pair of pajamas and sipping a hot cup of tea. The air was cool and crisp, but the blanket kept her warm and cozy. Mirabel took a deep breath, savoring the fresh air. The sunset was breathtaking, the colors seemingly reflecting her mood—happy, content, and at peace.

Her gaze turned to the left when she heard rustling, her lips curving up when she saw her boyfriend climbing up the tree to get onto her balcony. Once he had safely reached the balcony, Lucas gave her a soft smile. "Hello, mi amor. How are you doing tonight?" He questioned, sitting by her and pulling her onto his lap.

She giggles, her face flushing as she leaned into his embrace. "Better now that you're here."

"Oh yeah? You were missing me, baby girl?" He teased, wrapping his arms around her and resting his chin on her shoulder.

She wasn't sure what it was about it but that was one of those pet names that always managed to make her melt and she absolutely adored it. Her blush darkens, and she bites her lip as she looks up at him. "Maybe."

"You're adorable, y'know that, Bell?" He chuckles, kissing the tip of her nose and grinning when she giggled. "Anyways, I got you something. Close your eyes, darlin'."

Mirabel perked up at the mention of a gift, and she eagerly closed her eyes, a smile tugging at her lips. She heard Lucas shuffling around for a moment before he took a deep breath and gently placed something in her hands. "Okay, you can open your eyes now, baby."

Mirabel blinked her eyes open, her gaze settling on the item in her hands. It was a small, wooden jewelry box. She glanced up at Lucas, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

He gave her a small smile, his expression hopeful and nervous. "Go ahead, open it."

She nods, turning her attention back to the gift. She slowly opened the box, her eyes widening in surprise and delight when she saw the silver necklace inside. The pendant was a delicate star, and it was absolutely stunning. "Luke...this is so beautiful. I love it." She says, looking up at him with a bright smile. "But I mean, what is this for? You didn't have to get me anything, y'know."

"Think of it as an early birthday present. Your Sweet Sixteen is coming up, and I wanted to get you something special. Do you like it?" Lucas asks, his voice a little hesitant. "I'm sorry, is it too boring? Is the star not romantic enough? I just—"

She interrupts him with a kiss, cupping his cheek as she kisses him tenderly. He melts into the kiss, his arms tightening around her as he kisses her back. After a moment, they pull away, their breaths mingling as they rest their foreheads against each other.

Mirabel smiles at him, her eyes filled with love and admiration. "I absolutely love it. It's beautiful, Luke, and so thoughtful. Thank you, baby. I love it."

"And I love you." He replies, his voice soft and sincere. "You deserve the best, Bell. And I'll try my hardest to give you that. This necklace will also remind you that you are my brightest star, always shining in my life." Lucas gently brushes his thumb across her cheek, his eyes locked on hers with a tender intensity. "No matter where we are or what happens, you'll always be that guiding light for me."

Mirabel's heart swelled with emotion, her fingers brushing over the star pendant as she held onto his words. "And you're mine," she whispered, her voice full of warmth. "I feel so lucky to have you by my side, Lucas. You make everything better."

Lucas smiles, his lips brushing against hers once more in a soft, lingering kiss. "I'll always be here for you, Bell. Always."

Her heart flutters and she carefully lifts the necklace from the box, admiring the way the light caught the star pendant. "Will you help me put it on?"

Lucas grins, clearly relieved. "Of course, darlin'." He gently took the necklace from her hands, moving behind her to clasp it around her neck. His fingers brushed lightly against her skin, sending a shiver down her spine. "There we go. It looks perfect on you."

She turns to face him, smiling softly as she runs her fingers over the delicate pendant. "It's beautiful. Thank you so much, Lucas. I love it. And I love you."

"I love you too, baby. I'm glad you like it." Lucas replied, his voice filled with affection and warmth. He wraps his arms around her, pulling her close. They sit in silence for a moment, basking in the feeling of being together.

As the last rays of sunlight fade from the sky, the stars begin to appear, twinkling brightly. Mirabel and Lucas spend the night together, talking and sharing soft kisses as the moon rises, bathing the world in its silvery light. It was the perfect ending to a perfect evening, and it only served to strengthen their bond and their love for each other.

Mirabel woke up to soft lips pressing feather-light kisses to her bare shoulder and a warm body pressed against her. A sleepy smile stretched across her face, her eyes still closed as she enjoyed the sensations. She let out a quiet hum, pressing herself back against the warm chest behind her and relishing in the feeling of his strong arms around her. The events of last night slowly came back to her mind. Lucas showing up last night, cuddling with him and sharing sweet kisses on her balcony, him giving her an early birthday gift. Then they moved inside and fell asleep on her bed curled up by each other. The memories made her smile, and she couldn't help but think about how lucky she was to have him.

"Mmm, morning, mi amor," Lucas said softly, his voice thick with sleep as he nuzzled her neck. "Sleep well?" He asked, his lips grazing her earlobe.

"Morning, handsome," Mirabel answers, her voice equally groggy as she rolled over to face him. Her eyes fluttered open, and she couldn't help but grin when she saw the loving look in his eyes. "I slept really well. You're a great cuddler." She teased, running her fingers through his messy bed hair and kissing his forehead.

He chuckles, a faint blush rising to his cheeks as he smiles sheepishly. "Well, you're not so bad yourself, Bell."

She giggled, her gaze roaming over his face and taking in every detail. From his messy bedhead, to the way his eyes sparkled with warmth and affection, and the way his mouth curved into a soft smile. How did he look so adorable even first thing in the morning? Mirabel couldn't help but reach out, gently tracing the lines of his face with her fingers, committing every feature to memory.

"'M so jealous. How do you manage to look so adorable first thing in the morning?" She complains playfully, a mock pout forming on her lips. "It's not fair."

Lucas chuckles, his arms wrapping around her and pulling her closer. "Well, you're not so bad yourself, baby girl. Especially with that cute little pout." He murmurs, reaching over to gently trace her lower lip with his thumb. "I think you're more adorable than me, honestly."

"Even with the bedhead?" Mirabel giggled, her face flushing and butterflies swarming in her stomach as she tangled her fingers in his messy hair and giving it a playful tug. She loved seeing him like this, his guard down and his defenses lowered. It was a side of him that few people got to see, and she felt lucky to be one of them.

"Mhm, even with the bedhead." Lucas answered, his eyes shining with affection and amusement. He leaned into her touch as she began running her fingers through his hair, trying to smooth out the tangled locks.

"Good morning, lovebirds." A voice interrupted them, causing Mirabel to jump and blush at the unexpected interruption.

Mirabel glances over Lucas' shoulder, her face flushing more when she saw her mom leaning against the doorway, an amused smile on her face. "Good morning, mama. Sorry, I was gonna ask if Lucas could stay over last night, but I guess we fell asleep before I could-"

Beatrix chuckles, smiling reassuringly. "It's okay, honey. You're not in trouble, I'm just teasing. Besides, he's already here. I would feel bad for making him leave now. Breakfast is ready. C'mon, get dressed and head downstairs. You too, Lucas."

"Yes, ma'am." He replies, a faint flush creeping onto his cheeks as he glanced over his shoulder to smile sheepishly at Beatrix. "Thanks."

Mirabel smiles, relief flooding her as she looked up at her mom. "Thank you, mama. We'll be right down."

Beatrix nods, giving her daughter a smile and a wink before leaving the room. Mirabel sighs in relief, her heart still pounding from the scare. "I'm glad we're not in trouble." She admitted, glancing up at Lucas.

"Same, baby. I love your mom, but I'd rather not get on her bad side." He chuckles, pressing a kiss against her forehead. "I'm just glad she was cool with me staying over."

"I figured she would be since you have before, but it's nice to have that confirmation." Mirabel smiles, snuggling closer to him. "I love you, Luke."

"I love you too, mi sol." He replies, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "Come on, we better get up. As much as I wanna stay here with you all day, I'm starving and we gotta get ready for school too."

Mirabel groans, burying her face against his neck and pressing a few soft kisses there. "Do we have to? Can't we just skip school today?"

Lucas let out a dramatic gasp, earning a giggle from her. "You want to skip school, darlin'? I can't believe this. Who are you and what have you done with my girlfriend?" He teased, his hands sliding down to where she was ticklish on her sides and squeezing gently, eliciting a squeal and more giggles.

"Stop! Luke! Hahaha, okay, fine! I'll get up, stop!" She giggled, squirming under his playful ministrations.

"Alright, I'll stop," Lucas chuckles, pressing one last kiss against her forehead before rolling off the bed and stretching. "Come on, baby girl, up and at 'em. Time to get ready for the day."

With a blushing face and butterflies fluttering in her stomach, Mirabel followed him to get ready for the day. She was glad Lucas had some clothes he left over before she kept in the middle drawer of her dresser for moments like these. She went to the bathroom and quickly freshened up and got dressed, then headed downstairs to join her family for breakfast.

"Just like we usually do before your birthday, mija, you get your special pancakes for breakfast. Chocolate chip pancakes with chocolate drizzle and whipped cream." Beatrix grinned as she set the plate down in front of her daughter.

Mirabel grins, her eyes sparkling with delight. "Thanks, mama. You always make the best pancakes."

Lucas couldn't tear his gaze away from her as he watched her eagerly get her pancakes. Just something as simple as the way her eyes lit up with delight whenever she ate her favorite food had him completely entranced. He couldn't help it. He loved how excited she got when she got her birthday pancakes, and it was an adorable sight to see.

Mirabel was in mid bite when she realized he was staring at her. With a flushed face, she glances at him shyly. "What? Do I have something on my face?" She did. He noticed whipped cream on her cheek, and his hand instinctively reached over, wiping it away.

"You had a little somethin'." He teased, his thumb swiping across her cheek and lingering a moment longer than necessary.

She bites her lip, her cheeks turning pink. She felt a little flustered under his gaze, but she couldn't deny the spark of attraction and desire that surged through her. There was something about the way he was looking at her that sent shivers down her spine and made her stomach flip.

Their moment is interrupted when a plate is set down in front of Lucas, drawing their attention. "Enjoy." Beatrix smiled, setting down a cup of orange juice for each of them.

"Thanks, ma'am-Beatrix." Lucas corrected himself after the glare he received from the older woman. He kept forgetting he could call her by her name. He had always been taught to be polite and respectful, and he wanted to do his best to keep up those habits. But with Mirabel's family, they were family to him. They had opened their home and hearts to him, treating him as one of their own ever since he and Mirabel became friends when they were little.

Beatrix gives him a warm smile, reaching over to give his shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Of course, kiddo. I'll give you guys a ride to school when you're ready. No rush though." She gives Mirabel a soft smile, running her fingers through her daughter's curls. "Happy early birthday, baby."

"Thanks, mama. Love you." Mirabel smiled, her expression softening.

"Love you too." Beatrix replied, pressing a kiss to the top of her head before heading back to the kitchen to grab her own plate and join then at the table.

Easy conversation flowed as they all ate, Mirabel and Lucas exchanging small, loving looks and soft touches throughout the meal. The atmosphere was warm and cozy, and it was clear that everyone felt at ease and content. It was a beautiful morning, and it was only made better by the company.

Once they were done eating, they helped clean up and soon they were off. Beatrix dropped them off at school, reminding them to text her when they were ready for a ride home. Once her car was out of sight, the couple turned towards each other, their hands automatically reaching out to lace their fingers together.

"Ready to start the day, mi sol?" Lucas asked, squeezing her hand and grinning at her.

"Not really, but let's do this anyway," Mirabel replied with a soft chuckle. She couldn't resist giving him a quick kiss on the lips, feeling herself melt a little when he kissed her back and reached up to cup her cheek. But that hand had moved down down to the back of her neck, bringing her closer.

The kiss grew longer than she meant it to, and by the time they pulled apart, both of them were slightly breathless and their faces were flushed. She couldn't help the giggle that escaped her, the butterflies fluttering in her stomach at the sight of him. He looked so handsome, and the way his gaze seemed to be filled with nothing but love and adoration for her made her heart beat faster.

"Well, we'd better get going," Lucas said softly, pressing a soft kiss against her forehead. "The sooner we get the day over with, the sooner we can go hang out, just the two of us."

Mirabel nods, lacing her fingers with his again and smiling up at him. "Sounds good. Let's do this, baby."

The couple walked into the building, hand in hand, ready to take on the day together.
