Chapter 47 : Miraculous
I thought I'm already dead when Hoseok got ahold of my bag. I have a lot of things in it that might expose my true identity, but I thought of him wrongfully. I can see that he still has no idea of who I really am. One thing that I learned about him is the irony of him being too curious yet he respects privacy.
Hoseok occupied me. He was my distraction from thinking too much about Jungkook's date. "What are you doing here, man?" I asked with a forced smile while I reached out for my bag.
He hands me my bag, "Just looking out after Jungkook, wait... Did you cry?" He must've noticed my swollen and red eyes.
"I did. Titanic was too much," I chuckled as I make up another excuse and he joined me.
"Yeah, that one made me cry too." He commented.
"So, have you seen Jungkook already?" I changed the topic, and it was a wrong turn.
"Yeah, he seems to be doing fine. He told me he is going out on a date." He sighed. "Despite of him choosing you over us, I'm happy that he manages here well."
"What did you say?" I blinked my eyes rapidly.
"We insisted him to enroll in Vancouver out of worry but he really wants to follow you here," He grinned.
"And because?" I tilted my head on the side. He didn't answer me instead, he just shrugged.
We walked on the ground floor of the university as we continued to have casual conversation. Although it is making me uncomfortable because pairs of eyes are lurking around us, or probably at Hoseok. This might be a normal thing for him, considering that he and his group are very popular in their university.
"Since when did you study here?" He questioned.
"Since I was nineteen. I'll return to Vancouver after college," I informed and he hums.
"Can I ask you a favor?" He asked.
"Sure, what is it?"
"Can you watch Jungkook for us? You see, he is new to all of these. That girl he is dating right now might play with his feelings and he will start fearing women, again." We both stopped on our tracks in front of a very huge withered oak tree.
"I'm not entirely sure about that," I looked down on the ground.
"Why?" His forehead had curve lines on it. "Deonne, you healed him."
"I just helped, it was all him. He wouldn't get better if he had no will to be," They keep talking to me like I'm some sort of miracle maker when in fact I might be someone who can bring disaster to him. "Besides, if his phobia is really gone, then he wouldn't be needing me anymore."
I wanted to walk away but Hoseok pulled me by the shoulder. "You have to at least try," He speaks. "All I'm asking is for you to guide him and make sure no one harms him. Please? Just do it for him, do it for your friend will you?"
I closed my eyes tightly and sighed, "Fine, but I will not promise anything."
With that, the firmness of his face was gone by the second that a wide beam stretches on his face.
=====
"Deonne! Over here!" Jungkook shouts my fake name at the cafeteria. I was hoping that he didn't see me order my food at the counter. I don't want to have lunch with him, with them.
But seeing that innocent smile on his face, I was immediately drawn to him. I slowly made my way to the table and was a bit embarrassed to sit with them.
Looking at the two persons in front of me, I realized how low I am at the bottom of the visual chain. They are perfect for each other. I also heard rumors that this Vanessa girl is a nice person.
"Hi, you must be Deonne." She reaches out her hand for a shake the moment I placed my tray down.
"Yeah, Vanessa right?" I forged a smile while she nods. My eyes quickly darted down on her tray. She only has a small carton of milk and an apple.
Is that her lunch?
"So Deonne, what do you major in?" She started. I mentally rolled my eyes and huffed a puff of breath as I find her question ridiculous in an attempt to start a normal conversation.
"Fine arts," I deadpanned. Focusing on my meal will be much more interesting that her mini talk show.
"Really? Women are usually on that field." She commented making me clench my jaw.
"Are you implying something?" I arched an eyebrow at her.
"Nothing, just stating a fact. Right Jungkookie?" She calls and Jungkook was too focused on his food that he only nodded to what she said.
They have only met for days and she gets to call him with that nickname?
"How about you? What course are you taking?"
"Dietetics," She briefly answered.
"Figures," I remarked as I look down on her tray filled with her lunch. A minute after that was allotted for silence and I was thankful for it.
I continued to ignore them while they are talking about things that only they know. Later on, someone called on Vanessa's phone.
"Hey, I have to go. Meet me later after classes?" She asked Jungkook and the guy sweetly smiled at her. What caught me by surprise is that she kissed him on the cheek.
To hell with this jealousy.
"I haven't finished my food. If you like Deonne, you can have it. You look like you need more of it than me anyway." With that, she skedaddled.
After she left, I hurriedly finished my plate and left Jungkook alone on the table. He called for my name but I ignored him. I know it was mean, but it is better than taking out whatever emotion I have in my heart to him. It wouldn't do any good.
I spent four hours spacing out in my classes. It's a good thing that our professors were not that interested to me during my bipolar state.
After my classes, I went to the faculty room to pass some requirements to one of my subjects. "Hey, Mr. Miller. Here are the papers you told us to pass the last meeting." I handed him a thick pile of papers.
"Wonderful," He continued saying more things but my hearing diverted to another voice.
"Good job, Mr. Jeon. Under some circumstances, I was afraid you couldn't handle the task I assigned you but you did great."
"Thanks, Ms. Brown. It's my pleasure." The guy laughs.
"You must've enjoyed it, considering that you're teaching mediocre girls who desire instant fit bodies." His professor laughed.
"Not for that specific reason, I just simply love exercising. Plus, you told me that I'll get extra credits in your subject."
"Yeah, no worries. You deserve it." The moment they stopped talking, I saw Jungkook getting out of the room and I quickly hid my face in case he sees me.
He slowly closes the door and finally left the room, "Ms. Foster?" My professor called my attention.
"Oh, yes sir?" I shake my head.
"I was saying that your papers are excellent. You might get a high grade because if this, good job." He compliments and I smiled back at the old man.
After a few chitchats about his subject, I managed to escape at the professors' den. A callous hand suddenly grabbed me on my arm.
"What the hell?" I grimaced at him.
"What's happening to you?" He asked.
"Nothing, I'm fine. I'm just a little busy." I huffed. He crossed both of his arms in front of his chest and I noticed how he puts his weight on one foot.
"You're not, Deonne. Tell me what's going on." Jungkook demanded.
"I said, I'm fine." I pulled my arm away from him as I said those words through gritted teeth.
I was about to walk past him when he stops me. "Man, just tell me what's going on! I'm your friend, you can tell me anything." He exclaimed.
"Am I really your friend? Or I'm just someone who you owe because I did you a favor by breaking out from your phobia?" I asked. "Am I right? You think of me as a miraculous statue that can heal you up when you go berserk."
"You know that's not true! Why are you being like this? Tell me so that I can help."
"That's the problem Jungkook, I can't tell you anything!" A lone tear fell from my eye.
"I-"
"Might want to turn your back, your friend is here," I told him as I saw Vanessa walking towards us and he did what I said.
Having the opportunity while Jungkook looks away, I walked out facing the opposite direction.
