"Deanna!" My mom shrieked from the kitchen. Both of my parents arrived around four in the morning and I was lucky that I was home already by that time.
It's impossible that my dad is awake by now, and I'm guessing my mom is heretofore making food in the kitchen.
Today is New Year's Eve and I heard that mom is inviting some guests. Maybe a few relatives from Calgary and I'm not particularly close to anyone there. Tonight is just another family awkward gatherings for me.
I covered my face with a pillow, "Deanna! Come down here and help me!" She bellows even more.
Stomping my way downstairs, I scratched my head the moment I got into the kitchen. "What?" I groaned.
"Deanna Justine, didn't I tell you to wake up early today?" She started. "We have guests coming at lunch, you better help me, young lady."
"I'm still sleepy," I enunciated. Jungkook and I arrived at home at two in the morning because we ate at a convenient store after playing from the arcades. When the clock struck four, my parents came and my sleep was disturbed. Currently, it's six in the morning and my mom has her eyes already on me. "Aren't you?" I asked her.
"Just do as I say. I already hate the fact that you cut your hair so short without notice, it's unlikely of you, although I love the new hairdo sweetie. But please help me for now?" From being an feisty to someone who is attempting to make puppy eyes to convince me. That's how complicated my mom is.
"Fine," I sighed. Tying my hair into a messy bun, I grabbed another apron and wore it.
My mom assigned me to create canapés made with grapes, gouda, and arugula leaves. This is what we always prepare in the New Year. My mom believes that grapes will bring us luck and money in the next year.
"Anyways, did you get my Christmas gift, sweetie?" She asks and I rolled my eyes.
"I did," I replied. "I don't need it but, thanks, mom." I hope she hears my sarcastic tone.
"No worries, are you perhaps wearing it?" She suddenly holds my shorts to pull it down but I backed away.
"Mom!" I shrieked, making her laugh while she gets back to her work.
While she makes a dish and I focus on my task, we both heard footsteps coming inside the kitchen. "Good morning," My dad greeted and approached me as he ruffled my hair.
"I still can't get used to your short hair sweetie," He smiled warmly.
"Don't worry, I'm growing it back again."
Dad never likes cooking, he is mostly the eater and never the cooker of the family, and the second place goes to me.
Around eleven, mom and I finished cooking dishes while dad took a bath already. I went inside my room and I saw a baby pink sleeveless dress lying down on my bed.
I instantly scratched the back of my neck in annoyance. This clearly says that my mom wants me to wear this. I took a bath and just did what she wanted or else she will go ballistic later.
Looking at my reflection in the mirror, I looked like a guy in a stupid pink dress. To make me look a bit presentable in front of the guests, I wore a silver necklace and small flower earrings. I also added a little touch of make-up.
After that, I went down to help my mom and dad fix the table. "What time are they coming?" I asked my mother after placing the last plate on the table.
Exactly, I heard someone ringing the doorbell. "Maybe, now?" My mom glares with an unknown smile.
I volunteered to open up the door for our guests. Because of my scheme, I got a habit of checking at the peephole before opening the door. Much to my surprise, my mom was referring to the Jeons.
Our guests are the Jeons.
I saw Jungkook wearing a coat and noticed how he pushed back his hair.
Damn.
As much as I want to stare at him right now, I raced back into my room and locked myself in. I heard my mom yelling downstairs about my sudden action.
My dad followed me and continuously knocked on my door. "Deanna! Jungkook is here, come out!" He informed, my dad must've expected that I would be screaming by now.
I bite my fingernails as I walk back and forth inside my room. "I accidentally ate the lobster!" I lied.
"What? Sweetie, are you okay?" My parents know that I'm allergic to that. One time my face was filled with red marks and I feel so weak.
"Yeah! Still breathing! I just need to rest for a bit, can you tell mom that I might miss lunch?"
"Sure, take your time!" He told me on the other side of the door. I sat on my bed and breathe deeply.
Frustrated, I changed into different clothes and cleaned my face before lying down and wait for them to leave.
Hours passed and they are still here. When I heard that they're all in the kitchen telling stories, I carefully sneaked out of my room and hid behind the wall that divides the living room and dining area.
"It's unfortunate that you can't meet Deanna right now, that stupid girl ate a lobster knowing that she is allergic to it." My mom backstabbed me.
You should be praising me in front of him, mom!
"Nevertheless, I'm glad that I finally got to meet you, and that you can see my daughter now. You see, you are still her puppy love after so many years." My mom said in a whispering manner but I heard everyone laughed.
"It's nice to finally meet you too Mrs. Foster," Jungkook politely said. My dad already interacted a lot of times with Jungkook, especially when he visits Mr. Jeon.
"So, how did you broke away from your phobia, did Arnold find a way?" It was dad's turn to ask.
"He didn't. Jungkook just met a friend who magically helped him." Mr. Jeon replied.
"Really? What's the name?"
"Deonne Fray, he lives at the next street."
"I never heard that name though, is he new here?" My mom curiously asked.
"I don't actually... know," Jungkook said.
"Either way, I'd like to meet this heroic person too. Just dropped by here whenever you want." My mom invites.
"Sure Mrs. Foster, I'll tell him." I saw Jungkook smiled.
"Honey, can you get the souvenirs we bought on the couch?" My mom talked to my dad and he followed without further ado.
I ran back upstairs and I tripped while making my way. I fell on my side and it caused a loud thump. "Deanna? Is that you?" My father asked.
Limping and holding my waist that hurts, I rushed inside my bedroom and locked myself in it again. Fortunately, my dad didn't follow me anymore.
=====
"He looks handsome in person," My mom keeps taunting me the moment I got out of my bedroom.
"I doubt that," I continued lying. My waist had a bruise because of my idiocy and I'm worried about it because my mom has a habit of poking other people's waist when she gets hyper.
My mom sat next to me and I moved a little. "What happened with your undying crush to him?"
"I grew up," I briefly answered.
An hour from now, fireworks will start to zoom up in the sky. This year we decided to just stay at home. We usually stay at the Robson Square to wait around during New Year's Eve.
Later on, the fireworks slowly started and I stayed upstairs outside the balcony with a hoodie on me in case the Jeons see me here. I started taking photos then I was interrupted by a call from Jungkook.
I looked around outside and saw him and his dad on the streets preparing fireworks. I saw my dad outside with my mom too.
Checking that he doesn't notice me here in the balcony, I answered his call. "Deonne! Where are you?" He asks. He had to shout because of the fireworks.
"Home, why?" The sound suddenly had feedback and I immediately entered inside our home. I hid inside the bathroom as I talk to him.
"Just making sure that my friend is safe." He said sweetly.
"I'm fine dude," I laughed. "How about you? It sounds like you're in a middle of a war."
"Yeah, since I can go out now, I'm on the street with my dad watching some fireworks. Me and dad will light one soon in five minutes."
"Cool, I just had dinner with my family earlier. Any interesting events that happened today?"
"We took lunch with our neighbors earlier, it's my first time there." He tells.
"Oh, so did you see that girl?" I cooed.
"Nope, she was in her room. Her mom said she is allergic to lobsters and she accidentally ate one." He said in dismay, which surprised me. "Although, I saw some baby pictures in their living room. Her face seems familiar, I just can't point where I saw her." His statement cracked a firework inside my heart.
I nervously chuckled, "Of course, you must've seen her already. She's your neighbor after all."
"Yeah, you got a point." He says. A moment of silence echoed on my phone before I heard Jungkook screaming in joy. "Happy New Year Deonne!" The fireworks in the background are too damn loud.
"Happy New Year too!" I greeted.
"I have to go! I'll see you soon?"
"Yeah sure, enjoy the rest of your night!" With that, he ended the call and I sighed.
I went back to the balcony and looked at how happy he is with his dad while they're both watching the fireworks they lit.
I hope this year will be better for you, Jungkook.
