Chapter Thirteen: Erik

The next couple of days didn't seem to get better with each passing day the killings showed up without the intent of stopping, getting more violent and gory. What ever was doing this seems to be moving in closer to our territory. The whole situation has got everyone in the castle on edge and I noticed that the pack is also wound up. During the week Arabella, Orion, Amelia and I had to break up a couple of fights involving pack members.

One of them surprisingly including Bridge.

He was not an easy person to rile up, so I knew things were bad.

Though the most affective of us at breaking up fights seemed to be Amelia all she had to do is growl lowly and immediately everything stopped. Every wolf in the area had their tails between their legs as she stared at them.

A skill that I've always wanted to learn from her.

One that she was supposed to pass down to her Beta.

But tensions were a little bit easier now that the Silver falls had gone back home to make sure the same things weren't happening in their kingdom. But they said they would return in a couple of months to help solve this problem and maybe even a possible solution.

Over the past couple of days after they left Amelia was even quieter, it wasn't as if she was in a bad mood. She just seemed in thought a lot of the time that anyone saw her. Even Ara made a remark that she seemed distracted during their training sessions.

Another thing I've noted is that the prince, while agitated like the rest of the castle seemed to be, was hanging around Amelia. Every time I went to find her he was there or when we did meet up his scent was mingled in with hers.

My thoughts lately seemed to be muddled... and I don't know what to think of it.

I take a look around at the interior of the castle, my lone shadow being cast by the moonlight coming in through the windows. Something catches my eye, a person leaning against the wall looking down at the courtyard through an open window. The chilled winter air coming through lightly.

Familiar brown hair gleams in the moonlight.

Amelia.

"Thinking about leaving again?" I ask stepping out of the darkness.

Her eyes glow slightly as they look at me and then she turns back to the window sill. "Why? Coming to stop me if I am?"

I step in beside her. "If I have to."

She smirks slightly. "Spoken like a true Alpha." she gazes at me, almost analytically. "What happened to the Beta I used to know?"

"He had to grow up in the absence of his leader."

Her slight smirk falls again and she returns to gazing out of the window. "What's got you up this late at night, Erik?"

I'm surprised to hear her address me by my name without me having to ask her.

I sigh joining her gaze outside of the window. "Everything, my mind won't stop working. The past couple of days have not been easy on anyone... what about you? What's got you pacing the halls?"

"A lot of the things that you've just mentioned... as well as some personal issues." she turns away from the window and gazes at me again. "There are some days that I'm not sure who I am anymore or what I'm going to be." She says, her voice a now softer whisper.

I stand and listen, surprised at the fact that she was admitting things like this.

"There's a storm brewing and I am not sure that any of us are prepared for it... something very wicked is coming this way."

I stand in front of her and grab her by her shoulders, she looks into my eyes in surprise at my actions.

"Milla, what's going on?" I can feel scars under my hands where they rested on her shoulders. "What happened out there?"

She shifts, bitting her bottom lip as if to debate what to say, what to tell me.

"Milla, you know you can tell me." I let my hands slide down from her shoulders. "You can trust me."

She grasps onto one of my hands and squeezes it. "I know... and I trust you..." she looks directly into my eyes. "But there are others I'm not sure that I can trust... The time is not right."

"Amelia, what is going on?" I ask her now really concerned.

She doesn't respond to me instead she hugs me suddenly her face buried into my chest, not saying a word. I place my arms around her hesitantly, surprisingly she didn't move away or make any noise of objection.

My wolf purrs contently.

Stop it! We cant feel like this.

We both stand there holding each other.

The next day is another day full of anxiety and the sight of another mauled body, disgustingly close to the castle. Everyone is now on further alert for the thing that was doing this, now thoughts are wandering to the fact that one of us may be next, the next wolf that we find may be one of the pack or a servant in the castle.

Still amongst all of this, the plans for the ceremony for the prince were still in progression. An event that would bring in multiple packs in from around the country side and the rest of the world. Currently that was the debate topic for today seeing as it was only three weeks away.

"I don't think it was a good idea to bring any of the packs here, we had no idea who or what these things may be, what their purpose is, having all the packs together is what they could want."

The king nods. "I can see where you're coming from, but we cannot no cancel on over 400 years of tradition. Have you thought about this being another rogue possibly?"

"Yes, the thought has occurred, but..." I glance over to where Amelia was standing by Ara. "Something has told us other wise."

The king nods his head as he walks around the, table in the middle of the room, he stops and looks at Amelia. "Amelia."

"Yes, your highness?" she says stepping forward.

"I've heard that you've helped the team gain some insight on what this threat could possibly be."

"That is correct."

"Please enlighten us."

She takes a deep breath. "While I was on the outside... before I got captured by Van and his band of lovely men. I heard rumors from the town folk about something fishy going on, about some type of new soldier, but I never encountered one of them. After awhile the rumors died down and I didn't hear much about it again." she shifts slightly, I can see her beginning to become uncomfortable. "And then I was captured by Van, he didn't get me so easily. You know that scar he brags about on his abdomen? That was me, he wouldn't have been long for this world if I finished having my way with him..."

Ara smiles from behind her.

"But that's for another time, I over heard them once talking about what to do with me, see I was precious and they were talking about selling me to a local kingdom one next to the silver falls, a kingdom that is famous for being the home of a quite accomplished assassin." She gets a look in her eyes. "But Van and his men were talking about giving me away for research and not the usual dealings he has... I could sense something was off in the town. It always felt like something was watching you in the shadows, just behind you where you couldn't see."

"Interesting..." says the prince speaking up for the first time, despite his gaze being focused on her the whole time. "Have you had an encounter, with one of these things?"

"I think I have actually..." she sighs, staring off into the distance as if trying to remember specifics. "Once I'm fairly certain I had a stare down with a pair of red eyes."

Red eyes?

"Did it do anything else?" asks the king.

"No... and I have to say that's What unnerved me the most." she says crossing her arms.

"It just went away after a while? without you doing anything?"

She nods.

The king sighs, rubbing his hand across his forehead.

"Alright that's enough discussion for today. Erik, strengthen the guard inside of our borders."

"Yes, sir." I say.

The room clears soon after, minds not being at all at ease after what Amelia spoke of. If she had experiences like this what else had she seen or been apart of that she wouldn't speak of?

The hallway is now empty except for me, a few guards, and Amelia who seemed to be hesitating about approaching me. Although I wasn't looking at her, I am unusually aware of her emotional state.

This continues for a few minutes.

I can't continue to stand here and wait... nor do I just want to walk away.

"Milla, what is it?"

I sense her jump slightly.

"Erik... I... I need you to forget about last night."

About last night? Why would she want me to forget about that?

"What about last night? What's wrong?"

"I just need you to tell me that you will forget about last night. I-I shouldn't have acted with you like that, it was very improper of me."

"Milla? Where is this all coming from? Does it have to do anything with your association with the prince lately?"

Surprise emanates from her.

"Please... Erik." she whispers to me in a small voice.

My wolf growls and I feel my jaw and fist clench as I nod stiffly.

"Thank you."

Her footsteps disappear slowly down the hall.
