Chapter Fourteen: Amelia
Hello beautiful people and a Happy Thanksgiving break! I hope everyone has a relaxing week! Well now on to the story, I'm also thinking about having maybe a little thanksgiving special with our characters and maybe a little Q and A in the future. Tell me your thoughts at the end of the chapter. For now back to the story! ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
The past couple of days have been most stressful for those in kingdom and it got no better when each search we conducted left us with more questions than answers. Over the past few days the library has become like my second sleeping space since I've rarely left it in the name of research, trying to see there if there is anything in the old texts that might have recorded these creatures before.
A book slams closed next to me, and a frustrated sigh comes from Ara as she slumps forward onto the table. "Why is it so difficult to find one beast?"
I close my book as well. "Remember we're not just dealing with a regular beast, this seems to be something else entirely."
She groans running a hand through her hair.
The shuffling of feet reaches my ears. "Winston, What's going on?" I ask returning to my book.
I hear a soft sigh. "Will there be a day when I can sneak up on you people?"
"Yeah," says Ara lifting her head, "when we're dead."
"Come on now Bella, don't be such a downer." he says placing a arm around her shoulders. "You should smile more, you're b-e-a-utiful when you do!" his dark blue eyes glimmer mischievously.
She gives him a dead stare and rolls her eyes as she scoffs pushing his arm off of her. "What is it you want, Winston?"
He pouts. "You're no fun," he mutters, "I'll get you to smile one day yet."
She snorts.
"Alright love birds, break it up. You sound like an old married couple." I say closing my book.
I can practically hear Ara's fur bristling at my statement.
Winston, however, was grinning ear to ear. "I'm not here for anything particular, I was just ordered to come and help you with anything you need."
I raise an eyebrow. "By whom?"
"Our ever so kind future king." he answers pulling out a chair and taking a seat across from us.
Ara leans back in her chair balancing it on the two back legs as she adjusts her eye patch and then crosses her arms. "I'm surprised you actually followed the order and didn't go to the Alpha and try to find something else to do, I know how much you detest this type of work."
He sighs drumming his hands on the wooden table. "My lady, I may be a risk taker but I am not suicidal. Today is not the day to mess with the Alpha or our dear prince, their moods today are absolutely dark. It was like being in front of the oncoming storm." He rummages with something beside him. "Besides, I come baring gifts." he tosses two items at us.
I look at the Apple that I caught, my favorite snack, it smelled perfect.
"You can't send me away now, I've brought your favorite snacks." He points at Ara winking. "And don't say you don't need it because that would be a lie."
She opens her mouth to refute the statement, but her stomach grumbling stops her, and she quickly closes her mouth.
He smirks.
She blushes and aggressively takes a bite of the pastry covered in chocolate.
Those two... like the Moon and the Sun. If I didn't know any better I'd think that they were mates.
I quickly write down a book title that caught my attention in a passage and hold it out to Winston. "Here, I've got a job for you."
He takes the paper, standing up, he looks at me and mock salutes. "Yes, Ma'am."
I smile as he walks away into the many book shelves.
Ara sighs. "That man..."
I laugh. "You two bicker like an old married couple, he may get on your nerves but you like him right?"
She gives me a blank stare. "I don't want to talk about it." she finishes the last of her pastry.
I snicker and we both return to looking in our books this goes on for a few moments and then I feel a light tap on my shoulder. "Hey, check this out." says Ara.
I stand up and look over her shoulder at the page she had open. "What did you find?"
"I'm not really sure myself, it looks to be text of some kind describing a creature. But I cannot read it, it seems to be in a very old language."
I nod my head in agreement, the picture seemed to describe some type of monstrous black figure, it had red eyes and claws, but she was right this was in a language from days long past.
"Well it is something among the whole lot of nothing we've been getting so far."
She nods in agreement. "Do you think that this could be the creature you saw?"
"It's possible, but a whole lot smaller than what this text seems to be depicting."
"Konigin..."
"Yes, Bridge?"
"Where are you?"
"I'm in the library. Why? Is there something the matter?"
There is no response from him.
"What's going on?" asks Ara, upon seeing my confused expression.
"It was Bridge, He asked where I was but didn't say why."
"He didn't respond to you?"
I shake my head.
"Strange..."
At that moment multiple footsteps approach our location and Bridge, Orion, and Jewels arrive.
"What's going on?" I ask.
"We came to assist you upon the Alpha's orders..." Answers Orion.
"Surely he knows that we don't need all of you, especially you Orion. You have other duties to attend to."
He sighs. "Today is not the day to question the Alpha's orders."
"See even Orion is not questioning Erik." Says Winston appearing with the book I sent him to retrieve.
"Now, what can we help you with?" says Orion.
"Alright since you're here, you can help with the research and I'll be right back after a moment, there's someone I need to speak with."
Everyone nods.
"Konigin, you're not going after, Erik are you?"
I don't respond and keep moving out of the doors.
"You can't, the last person who tried left with his tail tucked between his legs..."
I scoff. "I'd like to see him try that with me."
I cut the connection, looking across the snowy plane.
***
For about an hour I wander across the snowy plane following Erik's scent as it criss crosses the area as the wind blows it to me. But it's pointing in multiple directions, where ever Erik is he definitely doesn't want to be found, he had become better at confusion. I was having a very hard time distinguishing the right path.
I stop, giving myself a second to find his scent.
"Erik... where are you? Please answer me!"
There is no answer same as the first time I tried calling for him.
I pick up his main scent and begin to go in that direction but a rustle from the bushes stops me. I turn around snarling my teeth bared, instead of finding a hostile like I thought I would, instead it was a familiar face, or rather muzzle.
"Your highness..." I say dipping my head slightly.
"Amelia, it is you... It was hard to see you until I saw your eyes."
"I guess it is compared to your color of fur... I'm quite useless in the summer time and it separates me from all the others. I suppose I've always been the odd one out."
"You're beautiful..."
"Leo... What are you doing out here?" I ask, changing the subject quickly before it could go somewhere I wasn't sure that I'd be able to control or get out of. I wasn't prepared for that or sure that I ever would be.
"I was out clearing my head... What about you?"
"Looking for Erik, there's something I need to talk to him about."
His silver eyes instantly become a little hard, the same way that I've noticed Erik's seemed to whenever they noticed me around another male.
Or each other.
"What's going on?"
"Something personal."
He steps towards me, closer to the point that I could see into his eyes again and I take a step back. "You know you can tell me-"
There is a shadow from behind him and two glowing red eyes.
"Leo, behind you!"
There is a ferocious growl and the clash of teeth.
