Hello and welcome to the land of Murou! I'm sure many of you already know what the werewolf genre entails, but for those who don't, I'll be providing summaries for things mentioned in this book. But for those who are familiar with werewolf stuff, I did shift things around to my liking and added different dynamics for specific information. I would recommend at least skimming through this, but, it'll always be here when you need it.
Also yes. I'm a bit of an anatomy nerd (doesn't mean I'm good at it though lol). So you're going to get a few anatomical explanations because I put a lot of thought in how secondary genders would work. Sorry not sorry :3
The Secondary Genders:
Biology tiiiime! Feel free to skip the next two paragraphs if you're really not that interested XD
Secondary genders (referred to as "secondary" for short) are additional characteristics that present near the beginning of puberty (around age 10, give or take a year). Pups are born with both reproductive systems, but it's usually apparent what they will present as based on primary gender (so females are more likely being either betas or omegas and males more likely being betas or alphas). Once a pup presents, the unused system is quickly absorbed back into the body. It's common for pups to be sick during this time due to the extreme changes.
Population wise, all secondaries are pretty equally distributed, with betas being slightly more common and omegas more rare. What's really a rarity, however, is a female alpha and a male omega. This isn't common due to hormones, as female alphas still hold more estrogen while male omegas have more testosterone. These hormones are slightly skewed, of course, to accommodate their secondary. Unfortunately, this does present problems with reproduction.
Everyone has their own scent once they present (pups have no scent due to historical times. It's easier to hide from a predator when you have no scent, after all). This scent is usually something similar to one of your parents. There isn't a specific category for what the secondaries can smell likeโsuch as only omegas can smell like flowersโbut there does tend to be a spectrum where alphas smell earthier, omegas smell sweeter, and betas fit somewhere in between. But there is, however, very distinct notes that no one has described that makes someone distinctly smell like an alpha, beta, or omega.
Alpha
Largely seen as the superior secondary. They are commonly found in leadership positions as they are naturally assertive, aggressive, and physically stronger. No, in this world alphas don't experience ruts (it doesn't make sense to me), but, they can sense when a female beta or omega are in heat due to a change of scents, and that's what they can react to. Any respectful alpha has self control, however, and don't go into a frenzy (this ain't that type of story ya nasties XD).
Beta
Makes up a larger portion of the population but really aren't that different from any of the other secondaries. If anything, they are the most diverse in temperaments and are the most adaptable. They are suited for many things and can easily be many things. Where an alpha would struggle being a follower, a beta could switch between roles as they see fit. This, however, leads to them being the slyest.
Omega
Unfairly seen as the weakest, and due to society, this is usually the case. But their patience and perseverance often lead them to be highly protected and cared for in hopes that, in return, the protectors receive the same. While they do experience heats 4 times a year, once again, they don't lose their minds to their libido. Not that kind of story. The worst effects are cramping and fatigue, but this can be managed by remedies, and it's not uncommon to not need anything at all.
Three hierarchies:
Hot tip: When referring to the Pack Hierarchy, the titles will be capitalized. This is used as a distinction between the Pack Alpha and an alpha as a secondary (same with Beta and beta).
Pack Hierarchy
(form. Hierarchy of the Pack)
- These are leaders of the pack chosen by the Gamma (elders) and earned for the lower ranks. Leaders can be propositioned by the pack, however, and the Gamma would take them into account. Traditionally, the strongest Alpha is chosen as Pack Alpha (form. Alpha of the Pack). He (let's be honest here lol) then chooses his subordinates, other alphas and male betas make up the mid levels, and the female betas and omegas are at the bottom. A large portion of packs are changing this, though.
Family Hierarchy
(form. Hierarchy of the Family)
- This is largely based on age, as the family patriarch/matriarch is consulted for wisdom in family decisions, no matter what secondary they are. Next comes the oldest alpha (or oldest child) and it goes down from there.
House Hierarchy
(form. Hierarchy of the House)
- This is the most adaptive, and it all depends on the House Alpha and how he/she conducts the home. The traditional view is that it goes father/alpha, oldest alpha child (or even mother/wife actually), etc. But it's not uncommon to find a household operating under alpha, spouse, then oldest to youngest sibling regardless of secondary.
Order of the Pack Hierarchy:
Gamma
The elders consisting of the oldest members and retired Alphas/Betas/Deltas.
Alpha
The head of the pack. They have supreme authority over everything within the pack, even Gammas, but it's common-practice to consult with Gammas often.
Beta
Second in command and takes charge if the Alpha is away/unable to or takes care of smaller matters.
Delta
The generals who report straight to either Betas or Alphas. Third in command.
Zeta
Highest ranking warriors that work directly under Deltas. They are in control of smaller squadrons and report to Deltas, Betas, or Alphas. May have previously been any of the asterisked ranks below.
Theta*
Lead medic
Tau*
Lead scout/spy
Kappa*
Lead hunter
Eta**
Warriors
Iota**
Medics
Upsilon**
Scouts/spies
Lambda**
Hunters
Nu**
Resource scouts
Chi
Teachers and educators of any age group
Sigma
Pack members with jobs (usually adults who took normal jobs)
Phi
Pack members without jobs (usually juveniles between 12-22)
Pup
Children under the age of 12
* or ** - Indicating they're the same rank but different titles.
