Ch 3
I smelled chicken soup being made downstairs, I sat up and checked at the clock, wincing in pain from the injury I forgot about, I had a small while until the mid day fencing practice was over and it was lunch. I made my way to the kitchen where my mom was pouring out a bowl of soup.
“Oh, hello dear, I was just about to bring this up to you, you slept more than usual, would you like me to check your temperature?”
“No need, I’m feeling better.” I accepted the bowl and pulled out a spoon.
“Okay, well I’m going to head back to the counter.” she smiled and started on her way back to the bakery. Once she was gone, Tikki flew in from my room.
“Here you go Tikki!” I handed her a cookie and rushed to finish my soup. I put it in the dishwasher and transformed. “Tikki, spots on!” I ran to my balcony and jumped.
I swung over the school and watched it let out for lunch. I saw Alya, and Nino exit together. My heart stung a bit seeing them, I wanted to be walking out with them to meet Adrien after practice. At least we’re headed in the same direction.
Not having to walk, I made it there first. I saw Kagami walking out with her bag slung over her shoulder and halt at the a ways from the edge of the sidewalk. I didn’t see anyone near her so it would be the perfect moment to talk. I started swinging down to her when Adrien walked out and started talking with her. Alya and Ninow turn the corner in sight of the building, startled I fall into the concrete.
“Ladybug?” Adrin asked, looking at me as I got up. “Is there an Akuma?”
“No, sorry, I just need to talk to her real quick, nothing bad.” I smile and motion to Kagami.
“Me?” her voice soft as confusion crosses her face.
“Yes, is that alright?”
“Of course,” she turned back to Adrien. “I will see you tomorrow.” she moved to follow me into the empty building.
The lights were still on even though it was just us in the building, the last person must have forgotten to douse the light before leaving.
“What did you need, ladybug?” Kagami asked as we sat down on a bench.
“Well, it’s hard to explain and it’s an odd request I’m about to ask of you.” I rubbed the back of my neck nervose. “I’m going to detransform first, you’ll be the only person other than the guardian of the miraculouses to know my identity, is that alright?” she nods letting me continue. “Okay, Tikki, spots off!” I was covered in a blinding pink light, when it faded, there I was as Marinette. Kagami’s eye widened in surprise, but the rest of her gave no indication that she was startled by this new information.
“Marinette?”
“Yep, that’s me.”
“Give me a moment.” She took a few seconds processing everything. “Okay, continue.”
“Well, this is about to get weirder, last night, I was bitten by a werewolf and now I need you to fill in for me for three days every month as the first and last day. I get very ill from the coming and leaving full moon and the middle day is me actually being the wolf for a full 24 hours.”
She just stared at me. “Alright, what would you need me to do?”
“You are taking this shockingly well.” I admired.
“We can’t change it so I might as well help.”
“Okay then, I’ll just need you to maybe pull your hair into pigtails and transform into ladybug and pretend to be me each month. Could you do that for me? It wouldn’t be for that long of a time.” I really needed her to agree, otherwise I’d have to find someone else and explain why I’m disappearing each month.
“I, I’ll do it, I’ll help you.”
“Really?! Thank you so much!”
“Mhm, anything to help my friend.” We exchanged smiles.
“So, now I should probably introduce Tikki now.” I giggle.
“Yeah I was wondering who that was.” she nodded to Tikki.
“You already know about kwamis, so I’ll just skip to, hi, I’m Tikki, ladybug’s kwami!” Tikki floated over to give her a small hug.
“Hi Tikki!” she smiled.
“Do you want to try the miraculous? This is a big enough room.” I take my earrings out.
“That would be a wise idea.” she accepted them and put them in her own ears.
“Great! The transformation words are ‘Tikki, spots on!’” Tikki explains.
“Tikki, spots on!” she transforms into a similar suit. I stare at it startled.
“That looks a little orangish”
“Pardon?”
“Sorry, the suit, it kinda got orange colour to it but is still mostly red.”
“Um, it’s red and looks just like your suit.” she said assessing the colours.
“Sorry, colours are starting to become hard for me to differentiate.” I apologised.
“It’s alright, it’s not your fault dog’s are colour blind, but that might be hard for you because you're a designer, right?”
“Mhm.” I rubbed my temples. “I can get through this.” I tried to relive some of the tension. “Okay, so do you want me to leave you to play around, come find me when you're done, I need to get some Advil real quick.”
“I have some in my locker if you need, I can meet you in there if you’d like.”
“Alright.” I smile.
“It’s locker 817, the combination is: 09-01-20-15"
I left through the gym doors to the hallway. I turned my head to see how she was starting and found her tying her hair up into ponytails to match me for each month. I made my way through the hallway, my footsteps extra loud and echoey. I almost passed the women's locker room, the sign being too small. I push open the door to a giant room of lockers.
“This is going to take forever.” I muttered under my breath. Sighing, I start looking through the numbers. “These are the six hundreds, I can skip that. Seven hundreds, aha! Eight hundreds!.”
I start running through the numbers. “805, 806, come on, come on, 817, 817, yes! 817.” I stop in front of the body height locker. I spin the lock 3 times to the right settling on 09, 1 spin to the left stopping on 01, 2 spins to the right and halting at 20 before I spun it to the left where I heard the click of the lock at 15. I gave it a firm tug and it unlatched. I pulled it open and found a bottle of Advil on the top rack, I snatched it down and dry swallowed 2 of them before putting the bottle back. I took a seat on the changing room bench.
“Hey, um, wolf?” I think.
“Yes?” this disembodied voice was really messing with my head.
“Sorry, but what do I call you?” I ask, I needed a name to address them. They went silent for a moment.
“I, I had a name, once, when I was alive.”
“What do you mean by that?” Is my life turning into a horror movie? I’m terrified of scary movies and am already traumatized from going to the possible future with an akumatized Chat.
“You know how you become a werewolf right?”
“Mhm.”
“Well, when a wolf dies without a pack, never even had one when born because of abandonment, which is rare, or because the pack they were supposed to belong to were massacred or for any other reason, their spirit is left. Our spirit is then transferred into a human host and then begins the cycle. I gave myself a name when I was alive but it’s long gone now.”
“May I name you?”
“I don’t see why not, this is to be your name too.” they replied. I start thinking up names.
“T? You seem to not really have a set gender from what I can sense and the letter T does not belong to a gender either. Also, it’s short and easy to remember.”
“That’s better than no name at all, at least you didn’t name me miss stuffy like you did with your manikin if I’m reading your memories correctly.”
“Wait, hold up, you can see my memories and read my mind?!”
“Why yes, we are one.”
“Please don’t do that without telling me, that's just a bit unsettling.” our conversation was cut off by the sound of the door opening.
“Kagami?” I asked, heading to the door. Instead I found Adrien looking like a tomato.
“I’m sorry, I don’t usually enter this way and muscle memory took over, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay I’m just waiting for kagami.” we made our way to the hall.
“Oh, earlier I saw ladybug needed to talk to her, I’m not sure what about though.”
“It’s okay, I can wait.”
“Oh, Marinette? I’m sorry about yesterday, I believe you, I hope Lila comes clean soon.”
“It’s alright, we had a talk with the principal this morning, Lila’s mom was there and I was proven innocent, I’m returning tomorrow.”
“That’s great news!” He scooped me up in a hug. “Okay, I’m headed to lunch with Alya and Nino, I just realized I forgot my phone, do you want to join us?”
“No, it’s alright, tomorrow maybe?”
“Okay, I can’t wait to see you in class!” I wave as he makes it to the men’s changing room. Once he had disappeared I ran to kagami who was just finishing up.
“Adriens here, you need to detransform!” I call in a hushed whisper.
She swung down. “Tikki, spots off.” she started undoing her hair, “Thanks Marinette.” Once her hair was out of the elastics, she removed and returned the miraculous to me.
“I can’t wait to work with you next month!” Tikki praised.
“And I you, shall we get some lunch Marinette?”
“Sure,” I said popping the earrings back in. “It’ll have to be quick, my folks can’t know I’m missing.”
“Of course, we can just grab some orange juice, we still need to do that.”
“Okay.” I giggled and linked arms with her as we strolled outside.
The sun was blinding along with the crowds during rush hour being deafening.
“Are you okay? You mentioned your unique predicament earlier and the noise is a bit loud even for me so I can’t imagine what it’s like for you.”
“Yeah, I’m alright, I need to get used to this.” My eyes search for something to focus on as the ringing feels to be shattering my eardrum.
“You should sit, you're becoming unstable.” she pushes me down onto the steps so I wouldn’t fall over. “Is your wound bothering you, do you need me to replace the bandages?” I shook my head as I heard two people rush to approach us.
“Marinette? Omg, are you alright?! What’s happening?! Should we take her to the hospital?!” It was Alyas voice.
I watched Kagami russell through her bag, rip open a new plastic bag and shove something in my ears.
“There, that might dull the noise, don’t worry, they’ve never been used, you can keep them.” I blink a bit. Everything sounded normal now.
“That, that actually helps a lot, thank you.” I touch my ears faintly.
“What just happened?!” Alya looked between us.
“It’s nothing.” Kagami replied and helped me up.
“It’s not nothing dude, Marinette looked like she was about to faint and you save the day with earplugs, I don’t understand dude.” Nino jumped in.
“I’m okay, I just haven’t been feeling well and my ears were ringing a bit.” I spoke up.
“Um, okay, could we treat you two to lunch or anything? We just want to make sure you're okay.” Alya glanced at me worriedly.
“No, I have limited time before I have to head home, thank you though, maybe another time?” I smile holding my arm, massaging it. It felt sore like T mentioned in our first conversation.
“Alright, do you want us to walk you home dudette?” Nino asked.
“I’m fine, you guys are here with Adrien, stay with him and I can get home myself, I must have just had a dizzy spell.”
“Okay, well, we’ll see you around maybe, let us know what school you get into so we can visit sometime.” Alya rubbed the back of her neck nervose. “We should go then Nino.” They awkwardly waved goodbye and disappeared into the building before I could break the news.
“I should probably find a place to transform now.” I said after a moment of silence.
“Good idea, I should go know but we really must have orange juice sometime. I hope you get better with your new abilities.” Kagami started to head to her family's limo. “Goodbye Marinette.” we waved and parted ways. I found a secluded alley way and start to say the transformation words when I’m caught with a fit of coughs. I felt my forehead and it’s a bit hot. I fall to my knees feeling terrible.
The earplugs blocked out a bit of the noise and it kept me from hearing someone approach me.
“Well, I thought I got rid of you last night.” I turned my head in surprise to see the man from the night before standing over me. He crouched to my level and lifted my chin with his fingers. “Lisen, I have a wife and two kids at home, I kept the wolf a secret from them but it’s forever a danger to my daughters and wife. I just want them to be safe, and if you also want to keep your family safe, you’d jump off of Pont de Arts or any building soon. You might have control over the wolf in that form, but the control you have is limited, the wolf will become dangerous and savage-”
“That won’t happen, I’m strong, I’ll control both me and T.” I growled at the man.
“T? You named that creature?” He laughed. “Well giving something a name creates a bond and some control, alright, I’m starting to like your attitude, here, I’m sorry about biting you, you were just easy.”
“Is that supposed to make me feel better?”
“No, not really. Okay, hi, I’m Paul, and you are.”
“I’m not giving a stranger my name, you can call me by the wolf’s name, T.”
“Alright T, if you ever need help, here’s my card, you can call me for anything.” He handed me a card, I only glanced at it before I accepted it and tore it up and threw it at him. “Fair enough, listen, I like your spirit so I’m giving you until the end of the year, December 31, to get rid of the wolf in any way. If the wolf is still in you next month, I’m going to have to get rid of you.” I glared at him, not wanting to reply. He observed my face for a moment before standing and leaving.
I sat there for about five extra minutes, ensuring that no one else was there, trying desperately to catch my breath from the fear.
“Tikki, spots on.” I transformed and swung home. Wind wiped across my face until I landed on my balcony. I detransformed and tried taking out the earplugs, my senses were immediately overloaded with sound causing pain to my ears
‘Maybe I should just try removing them every so often to get used to it’ I thought to myself as I popped the plugs back in to block the noise out. The trap door swung open, creaking a bit and I slipped into my room.
