The Fight
Words: 555
Description: Take what's yours and leave.
Story:
Remus and Sirius had been fighting. Both of them hated it, but neither knew how to stop. They kept picking on the little things, everything that went wrong.
It was a vicious cycle and a miserable one too, for the both of them.
At one point, Remus left the house and stayed at the Potter's for three nights in a row, sleeping on the couch.
Eventually, Lily had to call it quits.
"We love you, Remus, but you need to go home. You're never going to work this out if you keep running from him."
So Remus went back home to Sirius. They didn't speak for two days and again, Remus slept on the couch.
It was the next night, close to the full moon, that they really cracked. It had started because 'of course Sirius couldn't bother to do the dishes just once', and an 'oh really, and how's the laundry going?'
Remus had replied with, "You do the laundry? Since when? Since you don't have a house elf to do it for you?" Of course, a house elf can't do the laundry because then he/she would be freed, but that didn't stop the sting of the words.
Sirius stepped back, eyes flashing with fury, trying to come up with something to say that would really hurt. "How would you know? You're dirt poor, never had a house elf!"
They were stupid insults, really. They could be compared to those a third year might hurl at another student.
Their arguing turned into a screaming match, saying things neither of them meant. Tears were in both of their eyes, and Sirius had been on the verge of backing down. He'd seen the look in Remus's eyes, he knew he'd gone to far. He really did miss Remus and he wished they could just go back to being nice. They still loved each other and Sirius really wanted to be done with the fighting.
But then Remus, hands trembling and voice quaking, yelled, "You know what? Take what's yours and leave. I'm done."
Sirius felt like he'd been punched in the gut. "Remus, Rey, you can't mean that."
"Well...well I do. I want you to leave. I can't do this anymore."
Sirius heart quivered in his chest like it just might give out and break all the way.
Remus had covered his face and his shoulders were shaking. Sirius didn't know what to do. He would take it all back if he could, but the world doesn't work that way.
He squared his shoulders in resolve. "Fine," he said, walking over to Remus and scooping him up in his arms and walked out the door with him.
Remus yelped in surprise. "Sirius, put me down, what are you doing?"
"You said to take what's mine, so that's what I'm doing. You can't get rid of me that easy, Rey. I love you and I'm sorry."
Remus's eyes welled with tears again and Sirius set him down on their front porch steps. "I'm sorry, too," he said. "I dunno why I was so angry."
Sirius couldn't help himself, he laughed. "Yeah I dunno either. It was stupid really."
Remus nodded, leaning his head on Sirius's shoulder. "Yeah. Thank you for not leaving."
"I would never leave you."
"Promise?"
"Always."
