14. Catch a Wave II

It had been almost a week since Sirius had stepped off of that soft sand and he was getting antsy to go back. He was running a lie over and over in his head that he was going to tell James, there was no way that he'd let Sirius go surfing. Sirius would never hear the end of it. He wasn't sure if he could trust Peter not to snitch him out so he didn't tell him either.

Finally an opportunity arose for Sirius to hop on his bike and travel it on the open road. The mountains were beautiful, wildflowers sprouting through freshly wetted earth, and yet Sirius kept his eyes ahead. A far greater beauty awaited him where he was going.

The ocean waves crashed with a great boom, sending the noise miles away from the source. Sirius could hear the sound as he approached and gladly accepted the salty ocean mist when it flew over his face.

He drove into the driveway of that same burger shack and kicked out the stand. He let his hair flow free from his helmet and prayed to some otherworldly being that he didn't have helmet hair. He walked through the door, hearing a little bell ding to alert the cashier of his presence.

" Hi welcome to- oh god, not you again!"
The redhead crossed her arms in annoyance.

" Don't worry, Red. I'm not here to pick a fight. I'm just lookin for someone. He's about this tall and has wavy sand hair."

Her face lit up in recognition.

" Remus?"

" Yeah! Have you seen him?" Sirius smiled and eagerly awaited her answer.

" Waddya want with him? Last time you were here you nearly tore his throat out!"

"Oh that? Uh.. that was just some friendly banter is all, nothin' personal."

" Uh huh, sure. Why don't you come back later and I'll let him know you were here," the suspicious look on her face grew and she showed him out of the restaurant.

Sirius pouted and sat down on a log, staring off into the distance.

" Still haven't learned your lesson with those boots, huh? Why the long face?"

He looked up to see Remus staring down at him with that signature smirk.

" Remus! Boy am I glad to see you!"

" Oh yeah, you crusin' for a bruisin'?" Remus rolled up his sleeves and winked at Sirius.

" No. I just wanted to see you again, is all"

" Ready for round two of surfing?"

" Yeah, that sounds great actaully."

Remus chuckled and pulled Sirius onto his feet, " As much as I'd love to see you in nothing but a swim suit as soon as possible, I just got out from a long day of surfing. Mind if we grab a bite to eat before we go out again?"

" Sounds good to me as long as your ginger friend doesn't bite my head off."

" Oh, Lily? Yeah, she can be feisty, but she's sweet when you get to know her. She'll love you."

" Tell her that, " Sirius muttered under his breath. Remus' flip flops made a soft crunch over the sand as they headed back towards the burger shack. The bell dinged over head and Remus waved to lily at the counter.

" Hey, Lils."

" Oh, hey Remus. Some biker dude was lookin' for you earl- oh. I see you found him. Never mind then."

" This is Sirius. Sirius, this is Lily Evans."

" Its a pleasure to meet you," Sirius forced out, only half genuine.

" Likewise, Leather-pants."

" I  think you two will get along nicely, " Remus laughed, " Come on Sirius, lets get a table. Lily, order my usual, will you?"

The redhead nodded and called out an order to one of the teen cooks who was  working as a summer job. Sirius trailed behind Remus like a lost puppy while he picked out one of the handmade surfboard tables.

" You know, I actually helped make these tables one summer."

" Really? Why?"

"This little restaurant is owned by my friend Frank's dad. He needed some help fixing up the old run down shack that used to be here, so I volunteered. It's not like I had anything better to do."

" What do you usually do in the summer, besides surfing, I mean," Sirius asked curiously. He shifted in his leather jacket and placed his head on his palm.

" Well usually I stay at home and read, but one summer my mom got tired of me not going outside, I guess I had gotten too pail for her liking, so she made my dad teach me how to surf."

" Do you come here everyday?"

" I do now. I live right down the street. It's really easy to just walk down and escape socilization for a while out here."

" I suppose I'm ruining that serenity for you, then?"

Remus smiled, " Nah, it's good to have company every once in a while, especially when you're out there surfing. It gets pretty scary."

Sirius perked up a little at that. His eyebrows furrowed. " What do you mean?"

Remus got a far off look in his eye, " You know, the black roaring water when an unexpected storm comes. Being sucked down into the water with no control when a riptide appears. The feeling of water filling your lungs and total confusion when a monster wave crashes over you and the board."

Sirius gulped, " Uh, maybe I don't want to go surfing after all."

A plate of fries and a cheeseburger got set between the two of them. " What, you scared of a little water, Leather-pants?" Lily asked as she popped her gum.

" No! I'm not, its just.... aren't there sharks out there?"

" Oh sure, but you ask Remus here all about that, right Rem?" She gestured for Remus to scoot over and he obliged.

" What do you mean? Have you seen a shark in the water before?"

" Oh he's done more than just see it, Sweet-cheeks."

A call came from inside the kitchen and Lily got up from her spot at the table.

" I'll see you two boys later."

" What did she mean by that, Remus?"

Remus smiled and bit into a fry. He pushed his wavy hair out of his eyes and finished the fried potato.

"I'll show you later, lets just finish our food for now."

A forgotten ketchup covered plate lay on the table as the two boys ran out across the sand. They laughed and sang until they reached the stand where Remus had his surfboard. Sirius started to strip his layers of leather upon leather until he was just in his boxer briefs.

" Your turn."

" Uh... Right well, I'm gonna keep my shirt on." Remus laughed awkwardly.

" Why?"

" It helps protect against sunburns?"

" Well that's what sunscreen is for isn't it?"

" Well, unlike you Mr. Tanned, I burn much easier and even sunscreen can't protect me from the vicious sun rays."

" Or... You're not telling me something..... Does this have something to do with that Lily was talking about earlier?"

Remus sat down in the sand and Sirius followed suit.

" Yeah.... Yeah I guess. Uh, the whole shark thing."

" You don't have to tell me if you don't want, " Sirius placed an arm on Remus' back, hoping to be comforting.

" I know. I'm going to though. I'm pretty much over it now. When I was younger, first learning to surf, I-I didn't get out of the water in time. There was a shark in the water," Remus pulled his white t-shirt over his head. Sirius glanced over Remus' still pale skin that was dotted in freckles. Over his abdomen there was a long pink scar curving in the shape of a jaw.

" That was a shark? Shit!"

"It's nothing really, I'm fine. I'm lucky that shark didn't do more damage."

Remus put his shirt back over his head; he looked down into the sand and rung his hands together.

" How did you get back in the water after that."

Remus smiled, " I shook it off. I always check for shark warnings before I go out."

" I'm gonna kill those damn sharks!"

Remus pulled Sirius close and rested his head on his shoulder, " Don't be an idiot. The shark just wanted some food, poor thing got a mouthful of wood instead of a tasty seal."

" You're too sweet." Sirius turned and admired Remus' face, " Can I kiss you?"

Remus looked up suddenly, " What?"

" Can I kiss you?"

Remus nodded and pulled Sirius closer. They pressed their lips together and fell into the soft, warm sand. Remus gripped Sirius' long hair and sighed into the kiss.

"Hey! I just got off my shift, so stop sucking face and get your board ready!" Lily shouted from the across the beach.

Remus pulled away from Sirius ans laughed. He got up and reached for Sirius' calloused hands.

" Come on, hun, you up for some surfing?"

Sirius nodded and followed Remus, running through the sand, surfboard in arms towards the beautiful blue ocean.
