10. Chicago

Spoilers for Chicago the musical ahead.

It had been Sirius' dream to perform on the stages of Chicago, everyone shouting his name and begging for more. He would do absolutely anything to make this dream a reality.

It wasn't his fault that he and his husband couldn't afford to put Sirius on the stage where he would sing and dance for hundreds.

And it wasn't his fault when a young man by the name of Peter Pettigrew came and offered Sirius a lifetime of fame and fortune.

" I've got connections," He said. " Kid, we're gonna make you a star."

The man was short and twitchy, but he was kind and Sirius was drawn to the way that he spoke and how he would blow his cigar smoke in rings around Sirius' pretty and naive head.

There was only a small price to pay for the stardom that was promised. As long as Remus never found out, it wouldn't hurt him, right?

So Peter and Sirius would come home drunk while Remus was working in a factory with billowing smokestacks and low pay. The two would press against each other and Sirius would beg Peter over and over.

" Say it again, Pete!"

" You're a star, kid," he would growl into Sirius' ear.

But one night, after Peter promised that he talked to his friend down at the Leaky Cauldron to get Sirius a nice gig, they went back to Sirius' apartment. Peter was expecting what he was used to, not the constant nagging and interruptions that he received.

" What'd he say? Can he get me somewhere?"

" Who?"

" Your friend Tom! You said he had connections!"

" Enough, Sirius! You're never going to be anybody!"

He tossed the other man to the side and Sirius crashed into the dresser with a loud bang. He slowly got up and pointed an accusing finger in Peter's face.

" You- You LIED TO ME!" Sirius screamed, tears spilling down his perfect face.

Peter laughed in his face.

" Of course I did! I was just looking for some fun! It's not my fault you're so desperate."

Sirius snaked his hand inside the dresser, feeling for the cool metal that so desired.

" You're a liar!"

" And you're nothing but a dirty whore! Did you honestly think you could make it in this city? Well, welcome to Chicago, sweet cakes! Nobody ever gets what they wan-"

There was a gunshot. Sirius held the pistol out in front of him with shaky hands, tears still falling from his grey eyes.

When Remus came home he called the police and tried to calm his partner down.

" A burglar," Sirius told him, " He was trying to touch me!"

The police came and Remus told how he had killed the man, not Sirius.

" We're you aware, Mr. Lupin, that the man you shot has a wife and two small Pettigrews at home."

" No sir, I just knew that he was burgling my apartment!"

"Well, Mrs. Fig says that she's seen him before."

An old woman, Mrs. Fig, their neighbor pointed to the dead man on the floor.

" That's him!  Pettigrew, the homosexual that was screwing that man!"

She gestured to Sirius.

It was over quick after that. Remus was so devastated that his dear husband would cheat on him with a man that he barely knew. He confessed to the police that Sirius killed the man, how he lied and told him Peter was a burglar.

" Off to Azkaban with this one."

Sirius screamed and cried and begged. He cursed Remus for ratting him out and he plead that he wasn't guilty.

~

It had been a week since Sirius had gotten into Azkaban where he met his idol Tom Riddle who was accused of murdering his two henchmen.  Tom was a handsome man with dark brown hair and gorgeous eyes. He was a mystery to most and it was no wonder that people came from all over the U. S. to see his act on stage. Tom brushed Sirius aside like he was trash and continued to bribe the warden into doing his bidding.

The warden, Barty Crouch, promised that he would be able to get Tom a good lawyer and offered Sirius the same.

" Whats the cost?"  Sirius had asked, knowing that Crouch never did anything for free.

" Think of it as a favor, you know, I kinda like you, Sirius. You'll make a great star."

Tom was furious. He had been giving Crouch money for over a month to make the phone calls that would get him the best lawyer in town.

" Don't worry, Tom! Albus still has you at the top of his list!"

Albus Dumbledore. The man who had never lost a murder case in his entire history of being a lawyer. Everyone in Azkaban wished he had taken their case, but most couldn't afford his steep prices.

" How are you going to pay?" He asked Sirius.

" Call my partner, Remus! He'll pay for it."

And he did. Remus got a letter in the mail from a Mr. Albus Dumbledore. He was very puzzled as to why he would revive such a letter.

When he read it he was conflicted. Of course he wanted Sirius out of jail and safe in his arms. He didn't want his dear husband to be hung. But, Sirius had lies to him, had sex with another man.

Eventually, he found himself walking down to the attorney's office in downtown Chicago. He loved Sirius so much, he couldn't bear the idea of everyone in Chicago watching his neck get snapped at the public hanging.

Remus was a couple of thousand dollars short of the price that Dumbledore was asking, but working at a factory could only get you so much. Albus, being the kind old man that he was, agreed to take on Sirius' case anyway.

Needless to say, Remus was excited to have his lover back in his arms, and he prayed every night that this supposed miracle worker would bring his Sirius back home.

He waited every night by the radio to hear if there was any news of Sirius and he read every Newspaper he could find.

The day of the trial, he sat in the courtroom and waited for Sirius to come out. He watched with his observant eyes for every detail. Sirius smirked at the Jury and wink at them with his cool grey eyes.

" Has the jury come to a verdict?" The judge asked.

" Indeed we have. We rule that Sirius Black is not guilty."

And Remus rejoiced, for the man he loved so dearly was coming home! He was the last one in the courtroom and he waited for Sirius.

" Siri, you're coming home."

Sirius looked back at him with those grey eyes that used to be so full of love and he laughed. He laughed at Remus and how stupid he was.

"You think that I'd go back to that hell hole with you? No, I'm a star now, Remus. I don't need you anymore."

Remus watched as the love of his life walked away. He watched as the shows he booked with Tom Riddle grew more and more popular, and he watched as Sirius Black finally had his dream come true.

A/N

I watched Chicago recently and it is still one of my favorite musicals. If you haven't watched it you should try to see it. ( it's on Netflix for those of you who have it) Honestly, I could've done a better job with this oneshot, but I'm tired and I think I might be getting sick. And, to be fair I wrote this in less than a day.  So, happy holidays! I'll try to crank out another oneshot for tomorrow! Wish me luck!
