Shattered Remains.

Sorry in advance....I had to write it at some point... ok?!

Sirius had just Apparated from Peter's apartment. Something wasn't right. The boy wasn't home, but there was no sign of a struggle. Peter was the Potters' Secret Keeper. He was supposed to be in hiding... so where was he?

Sirius's heart stuttered when he saw the scene in front of him. He stood in Godric's Hollow, looking up at the smoking remnants of Potter Cottage.
"NO!" he screamed, voice breaking as he ran inside.

He let out a sob when he saw it: the body of his best friend, James Potter. He sank to the floor.
"No... please... Prongs... wake up," his voice broke, halfway turning into something not unlike a beg.

"PRONGS!" His grief cried through his voice, his heart bleeding with pain. But the boy in front of him didn't stir. The lively, admittedly arrogant, playful-to-a-fault James Potter just lay still, unbreathing and unseeing.

A cry broke through Sirius's sobs, and a voice lit up in his head.

Harry was alive.

He ran upstairs, almost tripping in his haste. He sprinted into the nursery, letting out a wail as he saw Lily Potter's body. Smart, bossy, lovely Lily, gone. He ripped his eyes from her as he heard the cry again. In the crib next to Lily was Harry Potter.

Sirius rushed forward, scooping up the sobbing, bleeding baby in his arms.
"Hey, Harry, Uncle Padfoot's here. It's okay..." he whispered. The words sounded hollow, wrong. It was a lie, of course. Nothing was okay. Lily and James were.... and... Peter...

The realisation caught up with him. Peter had-

Tears rolled down Sirius's face, marking streaks through the grime. Betrayal and regret stirred low in his gut. He was the reason his best friends were dead. He had told them to use Peter. It was his fault. He held Harry close, letting out a muffled gasp when he saw a cut on the child's forehead, the shape of a lightning bolt.

He made his way downstairs, his footsteps muffled by dust and debris. He shielded Harry's eyes as he passed James's body. He stood in the doorway, his eyes roaming the house that had once been full of love. His gaze landed on James. He shut the door.

He stood outside, holding Harry close to his chest. The boy reached out, grabbing for Sirius's hair as the cold night cooled the tears on his face. Revenge pulsed through his veins. Peter. The rat. He had betrayed them. Little Peter. Sirius shook his head. He would pay-but not now, not while Sirius had Harry. After. Soon.

Get Harry to Remus,
Then go after Peter.

He chanted the words in his head, a mantra of grief. He was a pile of sand crumbling into thin restraints. No, he told himself:

Get Harry to Remus,
Then go after Peter.

Just then, he heard a crack. He whipped his head round, relaxing minutely when he saw it was Hagrid. The large man lumbered towards him.
"Sirius... Is... is it true? James an' Lily...?"

Sirius couldn't bring himself to say it, to confirm that Lily and James were- He gave a broken nod.

Hagrid's hand rose to cover his mouth, muffling a strangled noise, half-sob, half-growl. Sirius held Harry tighter.
"It was him." Anger seeped into his voice. He almost spat the rat's name; it tasted bitter on his tongue. "Peter. He betrayed them, betrayed us."

The name hung between them like a curse. Hagrid's brow furrowed in confusion and horror, but there was no time to explain. Hagrid stepped forward, holding his enormous hands out gently.

"Dumbledore sent me. He says I'm to take the boy."

Sirius stiffened. "No."

It was a statement, a fact. Hagrid would not take the last remains of Sirius's shattered family. His voice was hardly human, a low growl, sounding more like his Animagus than anything.
"He's mine. I should- I need to protect him."

Hagrid's gaze softened, hesitating before approaching closer. Sirius took a frantic step back.
"I know, Sirius. I don't want to do it either, but this ain't a choice for us. Dumbledore's got plans for Harry... safest place fer him right now."

Sirius's growl was cut off when another crack sounded. Both Hagrid and Sirius turned sharply. Sirius let out a shaky exhale when he saw Remus.

"Sirius... what-are they-?"

He broke off into a sob when Sirius gave a grief-filled nod.

Remus crossed the distance between them, embracing Sirius, holding Harry between them. Sirius inhaled briefly, letting himself sink into Remus, just for a moment. Hagrid stepped closer, holding his hands out again.

"Please, Remus, Sirius. It's Dumbledore's orders..."

Remus's amber eyes flashed. Hagrid took a step back in surprise at the sudden anger. Sirius held Harry close to his chest, watching as Remus's temper flared.

Remus's voice was broken, raw with grief, but anger shone through. His eyes were puffy but alight with fury.
"No. Absolutely not."

Remus walked towards Hagrid, his boots crunching gravel under his feet. He only stopped when he was inches from the larger man.

"I don't care what 'orders' Dumbledore has given you. He can fuck off for all I care, because Harry is coming home with us. That. Is. Final. Understand?"

His voice was firm, tinged with pain but spiked with cold, hard fury. Hagrid looked rather frightened.
"But Dumbledore..." he tried weakly, trailing off when Remus shot him a glare.

Remus stalked back to his fiancé.
"Come on, Sirius." His eyes glittered with tears. "We're taking Harry home."

He held tight onto Sirius's hand, sending a last glare at Hagrid before Apparating away, taking what was left of his family with him.
