Chapter 4- The Truth

"NO! NOT HAWKFREEZE! IT CAN'T BE TRUE! TELL ME IT'S NOT TRUE!" Screaming and chaos woke Wolfpaw early in the morning, before the sun had even started to rise. Blinking worriedly, Wolfpaw trotted out of her den to see the comotion.

Cloudwhiskers, a grey she-cat with white speckles, was wiling in grief. Wolfpaw's heart sunk to her paws as she realized what this could mean.

Froststar was one paw step ahead of her. She was already on the crude Ice Cat statue that was used as the meeting place and Leaders Den.

"My fellow clan mates... Hawkfreeze is dead." Eyes widened with horror, and there were gasps all around.

"He was killed, and Icicleclaws and Skysong injured, out on a late night patrol by The Passage last night, when I sent them to look for signs of... a wolf."

More gasps.

"Last night, we were informed that the wolf was seen in The Passage, and last night, I made the grave mistake of sending a small patrol to check it out. I am sorry I have failed you. I promise this will not happen again. Tonight, we shall mourn Hawkfreeze and create a... honarary Ice Grave."

Whenever a cat died, they were taken to a huge, hidden cave of ice, and made an Ice Grave. and just below the surface of the ice, one of their loved ones would place a single flower.

"What... what do you mean, honarary Ice Grave? Where is he?" Cloudwhiskers stared up at Froststar with fear, almost as if she didn't want to know the answer.

Froststar stared at her with sad eyes, old eyes, and said "I am afraid there was not much body left, Cloudwhiskers. I am sorry."

A piercing, pain filled scream came out of Cloudwhisker's throat, and she fled the camp, head down, tail streaming out behind her. Her sister, speckle nose, cried out and followed her heart broken sibling, while the rest of the clan began to murmur fearfully.

Wolfpaw couldn't hear them though. All the blood was rushing up to her head, her own heart beat drowning out anything her clan mates were saying. A wolf? At the border? She... had been right?

"Wolfpaw..." Wolfpaw turned slowly, and came face to face with Lynxpaw. "I... I am sorry I told him. I was just so worried that you were right, and there was a wolf... and you were." his eyes clouded over with grief. "So I just wanted to make sure you didn't feel bad about Hawkfreeze's death. If it was anyone's fault, it was mine."

Wolfpaw just turned away from him. She wasn't sure if she was angry at him for telling Froststar or not. All she could feel was numbing shock. Shock at the first death she could remember, shock at all the wails and tears and grief. But the most shocking thing of all was that she had been right. She had some how known the truth.

And because she knew, her clanmate was dead.
