Chapter Twenty Nine
Chapter Twenty Nine
I tapped my foot loudly on the floor of the airplane. I glared at the smiling waitresses that were walking up and down the small aisle. I checked the time on my watch and noticed that it was thirty minutes past the time of the departure.
A few minutes ago the pilot said that they were having minor difficulties and the crew were doing everything in their power to not delay that flight any longer, but as I stared out the window I noticed a group of crew members in a group laughing at a joke that one of them had said.
I heard the loud tapping of the air hostesses heels as she walked fast to get to the other side of the plane. I heard her greet someone with her fake cheerful voice. After a few seconds of slight murmurs from the people surrounding me, I heard the sound of not only the heels tapping but also the sound of heavy feet.
I groaned inwardly when I realised that they had stopped by my seat. I prayed silently, hoping he was sitting the aisle opposite me. I tried to ignore the shadow of the two people that were standing beside me by looking out the window. I noticed the workers that had been laughing earlier were now moving the small carts away from the airplane.
I felt a sense of relief fill my body when I realised that we must be taking off soon. I felt a surge to turn around and stared at the man but against my body's wishes, I didn't. Instead, I turned my head slightly when I heard the person sit down in the seat next to me.
From the corner of my eye, I watched him put on his seatbelt. When he glanced my way I quickly averted my eyes to the window but I wasn't looking outside the window, I was looking at the reflection of the person behind me.
As the glass of the window had fingerprints all over it I couldn't make out his face properly, but I did see his eyes; eyes that were also staring at the reflections in the mirror.
Our eyes locked in the reflection. It seemed like I was in a trance. My eyes vent away from his prying eyes and glanced at the blurred face of the man sitting next to me. I realised that his face was very familiar. His face looked very similar too-
"Good evening ladies and gentlemen, we will be taking off shortly so please make sure you have put your seat belts on and all your hand baggage is either beneath the seat or inside the compartments."
Just like many of the other passengers I let out a loud sigh in relief. Even though I didn't know my aunt, I was glad to know that I had at least one member of my family left. I wanted to go home for the last time because after this trip there wasn't anything left in the town that I had grown so familiar with.
"I canceled my whole schedule for the next couple of days and paid a lot of money so that the flight was delayed until I could reach the airport in time." I turned my head, shocked to see Leon sitting next to me. He was wearing the same clothes as earlier but the only difference now was the black glasses he was wearing.
When I had asked Leon if he was coming with me he had said he wasn't sure but when I boarded the flight and there was still no sign I had given up the tiny bit of hope that he was coming along with me.
I was shocked that he had so much just so that he could accompany me. The earlier anger I had for the delayed soon flew away when I realised that I was part of the reason for the delayed flight. I couldn't help but let a small grin form onto my face. Throughout my whole life nobody had ever gone to such lengths; not even my own parents.
"I wasn't letting you get through this alone Ashley. I am going to keep to my promise of protecting you and I am going to keep to the promise of always being with physically and emotionally."
Even though what he said were only a couple of words, those words had great meaning to me. I didn't know how to reply to those deep words so I laced my fingers through his.
"Thank you," I said softly. I felt a tear drop from my eye and before I had a chance to wipe it away Leon wiped it away with the thumb that wasn't intertwined with mine.
"Take some rest. We have a long day tomorrow." Leon put the armrest separating us up and allowed me to put my head on his shoulder. Without hesitation, I slowly allowed myself to fall asleep in the arms of someone, that I knew I was falling for.
***
I felt myself being carried by a pair of strong hands. The person's strides were long and heavy. I gradually opened my eyes to the bright lights that were all lined up in the ceiling. I turned my head to the left to see that we were in the airport.
"You are awake," Leon stated. His green eyes stared down coolly down at me. Just earlier I was hypnotized by his eyes. I shook my head trying to focus back to reality.
"You can put me down now."
"Are you comfortable?"
"Yes, I am."
"Then why do I need to put you down?" I was startled by that question. Even though I liked being carried around I didn't want people to think of me as a lazy person, because I wasn't. It was embarrassing enough that Leon carried me out of the plane while I was still asleep.
"I want to stretch my numb body." Gradually Leon stopped walking and put me down onto my feet. I held onto his arm tightly as I felt slightly dizzy from the sudden flow of blood that could now go around my whole body. When I felt the dizziness go away I let go of Leon's arm and continued walking.
Leon fell into step with me and laced his fingers through mine. As I looked around the airport I noticed three men dressed in black were following closely behind us. Two of them were on either side of Leon and I and one were behind us. They all had long coats and had emotionless faces.
"Who are they?" I whispered to Leon, not concerned that they might hear me if they were werewolves.
"These people are out bodyguards. We are walking into another pack territory and even though they are our allies we can never be too careful. Isn't that your bag?" Leon pointed to a red colour bag that was slowly moving towards us in the conveyor belt.
"Yes, it is." Without a word one of the guards went and took my bag of the conveyor belt. He put the bag on the already full trolley that the guard was pushing.
"We have collected all the bags so we should get going."
"Where are we staying?" When Leon had told me to go see my aunt he said that he would take care of my sleeping arrangements as it would decrease a little bit of the pressure that has been slowly building inside of me.
"The pack here has provided us with a free hotel stay at one of their most luxurious hotels. They have also sent us two cars that we can use until the day we leave."
I took my phone out of the pocket of my jeans when I feel it vibrate. I opened up the message to see that it was a message from my parent's lawyer asking me if I had a safe trip and if I could meet up with him today.
"Do we have time for me to meet my parent's lawyer?" I glanced up at Leon who was looking over the message.
"Yes, we can have dinner over it. Tell him to meet us at The Burko's at eight o'clock."
I send a quick reply to him and then messaged my aunt to tell her that I landed safely and would meet with her tomorrow.
The drive to the hotel took less time than I expected and before I knew it I was walking towards the hotel's restaurant for my dinner with the lawyer. As soon as we stepped foot inside the restaurant a waitress asked us how many of us would there be and where we would like to sit.
I surveyed the room and saw that the lawyer was nowhere to be seen so we chose our table. After a few minutes of waiting for the lawyer finally came.
"Miss Winslow, it is such pleasure to see you again! But I must say this meeting is for a very tragic meeting. I am so sorry for your losses." I shook my hand firmly with Mr. Landis.
"It is good to see you again Mr. Landis!" I replied in a fake cheery tone, "This is my roommate Leon." I tried to ignore the sinking feeling in my stomach but I couldn't. As the night went on the sinking feeling only got worse.
"Ashley I just wanted to inform you of the will that your parents left for you. Your parents have given everything they own to you so the house, their cars- everything that belonged to them now belongs to you. As you know both your parents were hard working employees. The company your parents worked in have agreed to give three months' salary for their faithfulness in the company. Financially you will be able to pay for the rest of your studying but I recommend you start working a part-time job so that you start saving up in case you have financial problems. I will send all the documents you need to sign to your house tomorrow."
"Thank you for taking care of everything. I wouldn't know what I would have done without your help!" Even though I had a bad feeling about tonight I meant what I said genuinely.
With that we concluded our evening. As we entered our room the sinking feeling only increased as if it was a sign that everything was just going to get worse.
