Chapter Forty-two
Chapter Forty-two
As soon as I entered the university, I knew that Sarim's people knew that I was here. Some people who were in groups had stopped talking and were staring at me as if they couldn't believe that I was stupid enough to come alone.
Averting my eyes to the floor, I walked towards the elevator. Just before I could reach it though, I felt someone grab my arm. I turned around to glare at the person for stopping me.
"You need to come with me."
"You can't order me around." I was glad that my voice didn't waver even though inside, I was quivering from fear.
"Are you sure with that?" She opened her arms, indicating to all the people surrounding us.
I knew that Rawer's plan was working when I glanced at all the people that were now surrounding us. All of them had a serious expression and had their hands joint together. I knew that this was a good distraction but it wasn't for Rawer's plan to work perfectly. I had to do something. Something big. Something that will distract them so much that they wouldn't realize that they were getting invaded.
"I want to see Leon." The girl let out a laugh- a menacing tone that made my heart beat faster.
"I told you, you cannot order me around." The girl clenched her jaw in annoyance and flicked her hand towards me. Before I knew what was happening, two men stood on either side of me and each grabbed one of my hands. I tried to break free, but their grips were too strong. They started pulling towards the opposite direction, causing me to panic.
"I have something you want." As soon as the words were out, I knew I made a huge mistake. I had nothing they wanted.
"What is it that you?" The woman crossed her arms and glared at me.
"I have your mate." Again, another lie that I knew was going to get me in trouble. I wasn't even sure if she had a mate. My heart beat faster as I looked at her face for a clue to what she was thinking, but her face was expressionless. I prayed that if she did have a mate, he wasn't one of them men surrounding us.
The woman walked up to me and inched closer to my face until I could feel her breath against my face.
"Nice try, but it doesn't work on me. My mate is dead." She then nodded her head at the men who were still holding me. I was pushed into the center of the elevator and surrounded by all the men.
The woman walked into the now very full elevator and took out a card and flashed it one of the buttons with the numbers on them. Immediately the elevator door closes. Instead of going up- like it is supposed to go, it goes down.
I hoped that Rawer's plan- of all the Warriors sneaking in worked. I knew that I couldn't hold then off forever. There was also a very good chance that they could be caught and this whole thing would be a fluke.
The elevator made a ding sound and its doors opened to a dimly lit hallway. We walked out and headed down the hall. Loud voices echoed from what I assumed was a room at the end of the hallway. I sneaked glances at my surroundings but the men surrounding me wouldn't allow me to see everything.
"I have been expecting you." I recognized that voice but couldn't remember who it belonged to. Slowly the guards moved away from their position around me, to the corners of the room.
I narrowed my eyes when I never noticed Sarim staring at me. A smirk grew on Sarim's face when she saw me. It was almost like she could see through my mask and could see how scared I was inside. She seemed to be enjoying making me feel uncomfortable.
"You seem to love drawing attention to yourself." Her voice was slow but had an edge to it that send shivers down my body.
"And how am I drawing attention to myself?'
"Since the moment you stepped foot into this university and grabbed Leon's attention, everything was about you. Your issues were now our issues." Sarim pointed towards me, her eyes held an icy look in them.
"I never like liked Leon from the moment I met him. His outgoing personality just seemed to rub me the wrong way. I tolerated him though- what other choice did I have? I couldn't build an army right in front of him, I would only get myself killed in the process. A few months I heard about the rebels. Of course, I joined them immediately. They all had the motivation as me- kill Leon. We had a plan to break him down peace by peace but then you came in. It was a surprise to not only him but to us too. You were the reason our plan didn't work."
"Why are you telling me all of this? What does this have to do with me being brought down here?" I asked Sarim, interrupting her.
She glared at me for second and then carried on with the story as if I hadn't interrupted.
"I knew I had to do something quickly when Leon was distracted trying to save your problems. I had spies all around the university so that I was aware of every decision that you both made. When Leon decided to transfer the Defesta from your body to his, I knew that was the moment. Leon could beat the Defesta but it would take him a few days; meaning he would have minimal control- if any control over his body. The Defesta wants you dead and Leon will never get over you if he kills you."
"So that's the grand plan? You are going to hand me to Leon so that he can kill me?"
"Make fun of it as much as you want, just remember that when you are getting ripped to shreds I won and you lost." Her last few words were a whisper, as if the words were meant just for me.
"Guards take her." Sarim walked towards me- until she was standing right in front of me. "Goodbye Ashley." With that, the guards grabbed my arms like earlier and forced to me turn and walk.
"You will not get away with this," I shouted. I was shoved into the elevator and before I could hear her answer, the doors shut close.
Before long, we had reached the ninth floor and I was being shoved out. I tried to rid their arms off me, but it was a hopeless attempt.
At first, I didn't know where we were going. The slight gap left by the men that surrounded me, allowed me to see very little of my whereabouts.
After a few times of passing the same painting on the wall, I noticed that we were going around in circles. It was almost like they waiting for something or more likely someone.
I heard a crash behind me, I turned around to look and noticed the men that were surrounding me, now moving away from me slowly. They all were looking towards the place the crash happened. I wiped my sweaty palms against my pants.
"Ashley." I didn't have to turn around to know who, the voice belonged to. I turned around to see Leon walking towards me. Even though it had only been one day since I last saw him, he looked completely different from his normal self.
His usually combed hair was now all messed up and the clothes that he was wearing from yesterday had holes in them, revealing the burn marks on his skin. I had no idea where it came from but I did have a nagging feeling that Sarim was part of it somehow.
He had a stony look on his face as if he was having an internal battle inside of him- which could actually be happening. I didn't know how strong or how long Leon could hold on far. I just hoped that Rawer would reach in time so that we both didn't get hurt- me physically while him emotionally.
By now all the men had disappeared, leaving me alone with Leon- who was being controlled by the Defesta. I pursed my lips and looked around the hallway to find some sort of weapon.
"Ashley, Ashley, when will you realize that you cannot run away from me?"
"Why are you doing this? Why are you abundant on hurting me?"
"Have you watched someone you love, get killed right in front of your eyes?" I nodded my head as a no. "It's the most painful thing you can ever experience. It opens your eyes to all of the dangers of the world and it shows you how easy it is to kill someone. After you go something as traumatic as that, you change. I mean who could blame you right? If you watch someone you love, killed, wouldn't you feel like something is ripped from your heart?" Leon ran his fingers along my cheek, causing me to flinch away.
"How does that have anything to do with me?"
"Don't take it personally, Ashley. I don't have anything against you- you were just there at the wrong place at the wrong time."
"What do you mean?"
"It is not going to work on me so stop doing it."
"What are you talking about?"
"You think asking me questions will buy you some time for someone to rescue you, but guess what Ashley. No one is going to save you!" Even though I knew that it wasn't Leon, his words stung me, harder than they should have. "I am going to kill you and nobody else is going to stop me."
Before I had any chance to contempt what was happening I was thrown into the air. I crashed in the wall and collapsed onto the floor. I pushed myself with my arms but was shoved back down by a foot. I brought my hand to the back of my head to feel warm, sticky fluid there.
"Please, don't do this," I begged, staring at Leon in the eyes. Tears fell from my eyes and rolled down my face.
"It is time to say goodbye to your mate, Ashley."
"I am begging you-" I felt him kick me in the ribs, causing a sickening sound to echo in the hallway. I let out a loud scream- hoping someone could save me. Through my blurry vision, I noticed Leon pull his hands back and punch me in the face- causing me to let out another blood curling scream. I felt myself slowly losing consciousness. My eyes slowly drifting close. My arms slacked in defeat and soon I felt my whole body slacken from all of the pain.
