[7] Bite
The first time Mia witnessed Samantha getting bitten, it was an injury delivered by none other than her brother. It was the night of the costume party, where just prior to their drop-off Saurus adamantly stated he'd pick them up at 11 P.M sharp. No ifs, ands, or buts.
The party had been everything and more than they expected. The music was wild, the drinks sweet, and the food delicious. People naturally flocked to Sammie and basked in the opportunity to meet her, they were dazzled by the beautiful werewoman and enjoyed her company. When it came to dancing the girls dove right in. At first awkward, as it was their first time, but then gradually smoothed into it through watching others.
By the time eleven hit Sammie's phone rang like an alarm clock.
"Hello?!" Samantha pulled Mia to the side with her as she answered her phone. "Don't worry, we'll be right out."
Mia pouted. They had been having so much fun. "Aww, such a party pooper!" Mia had to yell in order to be heard over the booming music.
She prepared to gather their things when instead of heading to the door, Sammie led them right back to the dancefloor. "Just one more song!" She expressed, getting right into rhythm.
Mia pumped her fist into the air and did just as much. As before, people gathered around them and in moments they were circled by dancing teenage bodies. One song became two. And two multiplied to eight. Next thing they knew it was twelve and Sammie had over four missed calls. Who know when they would have left, for their departure was not done on their terms.
A large, looming figure entered the household, and despite the blaring music multiple female gasps were heard from all around. Numerous eyes filled with amazement and awe as they followed the black-clad enigmatic male. He made his way across the dancefloor, his gaze one-track to a particular pair of girls.
What is he dressed as? Is he a hunter?
A very handsome one if he is. Can he be mine?
I heard he avoids girls like the plague, he only takes care of his sister.
He is so hot!
Mia was happily shaking her hips when a hand latched to her upper arm, painfully so. She looked up to meet furious eyes leveling her with a glare. It wasn't just her, Samantha was similarly grasped. With discreet handling Samuel guided them to the door. The upbeat music was forgotten by the party-goers in exchange for a nice look at the celebrity visitor. Were it up to them they'd get to know him better as they had Samantha.
Outside Mia became nervous. They were a few feet from his car and he had yet to let go of them. If he kept this up her arm would go numb from lack of circulation. Samuel made Mia go to the back but had Sammie sit passenger side. That wasn't a good sign. Mia didn't understand how her bestfriend could be so calm, she was absolutely terrified! Once the doors closed their argument began.
"What part of eleven o'clock sharp did you not understand!" Samuel berated, staring his sister down.
Sammie rolled her eyes defiantly and crossed her arms. "We were having a good time! You should have joined us instead of being a prick and pulling us out!"
"Do you really think I don't have better things to do?! The pack is undergoing preparations for a trip I have to join tomorrow morning. You know this! I don't need two flimsy girls wasting my time. Since you can't follow simple instructions, no parties for the rest of the year." He set the car into drive and started moving home.
Samantha's eyes widened, as did Mia's. Samuel knew that after this costume party Shannon Carter would be hosting two more before the year ends. Those were said to be greater than this one. "You can't!" Sammie cried, her features twisted to one of appalment.
Samuel's grip on the wheel tightened. "Should have thought of that before ignoring my five calls and making me wait an hour."
"Well I don't care! I'm old enough to make my own decisions and I will go whether you like it or not! Watch me!"
At her outburst Samuel parked the car at a stop sign and bite her shoulder. When he pulled away Sammie looked down ashamed and Samuel's eyes remained inflamed. "You have no license. No car. No job. No bills. No responsibilities. You leave everything to me so I can pick up your slack and I never complain. You were inconsiderate tonight. I don't want to hear another word from you." He hissed.
Sammie bit her lip remorsefully and Mia shivered with dread. The animosity was not directed to her but it made her uneasy. While they have had arguments before, they usually never happened in front of her. Samantha remained mute the entire car ride home. A tense silence hung over them, and when Samuel parked Mia nervously followed Sammie to her room. Two somber faces entered the messy area, it was still in disarray from their preparations earlier.
Mia took a look at Sammie's shoulder. It wasn't bleeding, but it was definitely red. "I can't believe he bit you." Mia whispered, purposely using a low tone in case he was around.
Samantha took her cap off, letting it fall to her floor without a care. She was frowning. "It's happened before. In weremen culture, we bite young ones when we feel they're misbehaving. He's really mad at me." She said, clearly upset she was in bad terms with her brother. "I was having so much fun I forgot he had the trip tomorrow."
Mia pat her back. "Don't worry, Samuel will forgive you. You know he loves you, you're his sister."
Samantha started crying, seeming to not have heard her. "He's so mad. I hate it when he's mad at me. Now he won't talk to me and he's leaving for the trip."
Mia hugged her, she didn't know what else to do. As a single child she couldn't relate to the deep bond Samuel and Samantha carried. They were always looking out for each other. Samuel in specific made sure Sammie had everything she needed and was safe. Their parents were rarely around, they were ambassadors that traveled worldwide to ensure the preservation of wildlife animals. That, coupled with taking care of the businesses they owned in Dark Falls made them highly unavailable.
Samuel took up much responsibility for Samantha since their youth. From car rides to clothes, he provided everything for her. In a way, it made Sammie lazy to do certain things for herself that she should have at her age—like getting a license, but her brother never complained. The two were very close. Mia never knew how to properly comfort her best-friend when they argued. From experience the only way to fix her sadness was for her brother to make amends. She sincerely hoped he would talk to her before he left in the morning.
With a sigh, Mia led her somber best-friend to the bed and made her watch her favorite show while she cleaned the messy room herself.
Present
Mia was in heaven. At least that's what it felt like. The mattress beneath her was supportive, but it molded to the contours of her body so beautifully. Comfort was too simple a word to describe this. Bliss. Yes, that was more like it.
It's a shame this bed belonged to Samuel, that annoying teradaptos. Were it not for him she wouldn't be here. Her purpose had been to return clothes she freshly laundered. All types of attire were put in their respective place—his regular clothes, sportswear, businesswear, underwear, all the way down to his bed sheets, which after putting around the bed became irresistible to taste.
Could she steal the mattress and put it in her room? She was the visitor after all. Maybe he wouldn't mind.
Haha, yeah right. That was funny.
Mia flipped over faced down, stuffing her face into his plush pillow. She could stay like this forever!
Today marked the second day of doing everything Saurus wanted, which mainly consisted of frivolous chores. Dusting the books. Filing his papers. Cleaning his closet. Washing the laundry. The list went on and on. Her only reprieve was he usually ended the chores by lunch time, so she wasn't back and forth all day.
Mia was well on her way in taking an afternoon nap when the door flung open.
Samuel grunted with annoyance. "Since when did 'do my laundry' translate to 'lay on my bed'. The whole point of laundry was to clean it, now you dirtied it again with your human scent."
Mia propped on her elbows, sending him the evil eye. "Go away! You're ruining my nap." She complained.
His eyes narrowed to slits with his lips forming a tight line. He was giving her one of his are-you-kidding-me expressions. "Did you forget this is my room. Go take a nap in your own. I don't want your germs on my bed."
"Is that so?" Feeling childish, she pulled away from his pillow and let her tongue run straight across it, looking at him throughout the whole process. "Keep bothering me and I'll keep contaminating your stuff." She threatened.
Technically, she was in the wrong by invading his space and being inconsiderate. Not that she cared. She waited for him snap back, but surprisingly enough he didn't. Instead, he sighed deeply and took off his shoes, turning the ceiling fan on before approaching the bed.
It was then Mia realized he didn't seem like himself. His shoulders sagged and there were mild bags under his eyes. For a man who always looked perfect he showed signs of stress. To further prove her observations he dropped on the opposite side of her and laid down.
Immediately his eyes closed into rest. Mia watched him silently. She did notice he had been staying additional hours in his study for a few days now. She left him there yesterday around one in the morning and found him there when she woke up at eight. Had he even slept last night? The fact that he barely argued with her showed something was wrong.
Mia crawled to him and poked his face. "Reptile, what's wrong?" She asked, curious to know his affliction. Something was bothering him more than she was. It wasn't right.
As she continued to poke his cheek his brows furrowed in irritation, letting her know he felt it. Why was he not responding? Her sharp jabs became feather light as she explored his face. Strong jawline, straight nose, well-spaced eyebrows. He truly was a handsome wereman. He wouldn't be single if he gave more females a chance and got rid of his meanness. Then again, he was only mean to her.
Mia's eyes fell to his lips. She avoided looking at them before, but they were so magnetizing. As much as she hated Samuel, she couldn't deny she had a certain... pull to him. It was unfortunate. It was horrible. She would do anything to get rid of that nudging grievance, but it was there all the same.
She had merely grazed half his bottom lip when his hand sniped her finger. "Stop bothering me and take your stupid nap." He hissed. "Otherwise, get out."
Mia pouted. How rude. She could tell he wasn't angry though, more so exhausted.
"I want to know what's bothering you." She whined, tugging his hair.
His lashes swept upwards, giving way to a pair of onyx orbs full of disdain. "I want you to leave."
Mia knew he was trying to use their agreement to get her to leave. She wouldn't make it that easy. "No."
"Did you forget our arrangement? Everything I want for three days, human."
Mia regarded him coolly. "Except in instances when I especially don't feel like it, such as now."
Samuel looked like he was ready to blow up at her recently made-up clause, but then, like before, he merely sighed and let it go, closing his eyes once more.
Mia pursed her lips. This must be more serious than she thought. Now she was really curious.
His forehead lined with deep distress. Mia casually ran her fingers over it to smooth it. Those went away, only for the tension to transfer to his jaw. She brushed over it in similar fashion. But then, the stress travelled to his shoulders.
Mia pulled a face in askance. By this time he would have made a huge fuss about her touching. He was allowing her too many liberties. This was bad. She needed to go harder for a response.
Making her decision, she latched onto him like a vulture, wrapping her arms over his shoulders for a hug.
Immediately, he emitted a low growl. "Get your gross hands off me woman." He demanded. His lips curled to a snarl but his eyes remained closed in exhaustion.
Undaunted, she stayed put. He hated when she touched him freely. Mainly friendly gestures like hugs. There were very specific cases he allowed these things but on average he abhorred her contact. "Tell me!" She demanded. What was it that had him so bothered? It was driving her up the wall.
Suddenly, a sharp pain travelled from the base of her shoulder. Mia winced as he bit into her, a clear sign he wanted her to get off as quickly as possible. She bore through it, this wasn't the first time he bit her like this. Being longtime best friends with Samantha opened her up to a variety of experiences with this man.
"I'm not letting go until you tell me!"
Samuel pulled his lips away from her. He opened his eyes and glared, full of vehemence and rage. Three golden dots circled around his pupil. "Mia, if you let go of me I will let our deal end today. You won't have to do anything I want tomorrow."
Mia paused. She was itching to know what bothered him. At the same time, that offer was rather enticing. "If I let you go...I'm free?"
"Yes." He grounded.
"Nothing more for today, nothing tomorrow?" Mia wanted to ensure she would receive everything he claimed.
"Yes."
Mia's heart was divided between satisfying her curiosity and getting out of the deal. She wavered minutely before making a decision. "Very well." She withdrew her arms away from him and left his bed. Samuel remained silent. He didn't say any caustic remarks or give a mean look, he only continued to rest.
Something really must have bothered him. She almost wondered what would have happened if she'd remained resilient in her questioning. Opening his door, she decided to not look back at her choice. After all, there were other ways to get answers. She knew just the person to go to.
Samantha was in the middle of taking off her facemask when Mia found her. Immediately Mia latched on to her arm. "Sammie, something horrible happened to your brother!"
The pretty werewoman continued to wipe her face with a damp hand towel. She raised a interested brow. "What makes you say that?"
Mia frowned. Great. If Sammie was asking this then surely that meant she had no idea. "Because I'm not able to bother him the way I usually do... Do you know if something happened?" She asked, hoping she at least had some kind of information.
Samantha shrugged. Her vague impression told Mia she was hiding something though. She followed her out the bathroom and waited impatiently for her say something. Finally, she let her head fall back, as though trying to remember something. "I do think something is off." She mentioned. "You should ask him, I haven't talked to him much today."
Mia groaned. Great. So Samantha was completely clueless and she was the one who typically knew everything when it came to that wereman. "I did, he refused to tell me." She admitted morosely.
Samantha giggled. "Since when did you give up so easily? You usually get it out after bothering him long enough."
"I know, but this time it was different. He offered me out of our deal in exchange for leaving his room. Obviously I can't say no to that."
Her best-friend remained unbothered. "You usually find ways to side-step your agreements." She mentioned casually, beginning to change into her workout gear. Mia knew that within an hour she would have to join her in training.
"I'll see you in a bit." Mia said. She departed from Sammie's room and settled in Samuel's study to do some online school work.
As much as she tried to forget about Saurus she just couldn't. His glum demeanor, the invisible weight he carried over him. It was as though he were being pressured on all sides into a tight corner. What was going on? She replayed their interaction earlier to find some clue. In the end she came out empty, but when she skimmed over their agreement her mood brightened. She may have agreed to let him go in that moment for a release from their deal, but they never addressed her going back.
It was settled, then. Once she finished some schoolwork and worked out with Sammie she would be revisiting her saddened reptile.
