Chapter 13 Under the rubble
The world was moving. The one time I didn't wake up with the sun and the very earth itself decided to wake me up. I thought as I tried to sit up. The rumble coming from the earth seemed to be in a rhythmic pattern. It sounded like music.
Katja screamed and I jumped out of the bed over Michi to get to her. The wagon shook and the horses screamed. Michi tried to get up, twice falling back onto the bed with the violent shaking. Eventually, after a few more tries he climbed onto the seat and then disappeared with a thud.
I held Katja closer to me as I called to Michi. "Are you alright?"
"Yes. I just fell. I'm checking the wagon." He yelled over the sound of the horse's panic.
I stroked Katja's hair as the ground shook and the oppressive feeling grew heavy around us. "What's going on mum?" Katja screamed.
"I don't know Pup. We will be alright." I was surprised that my voice didn't show my fear. This must be the alpha in me.
There was a creak and Michi yelled at a crash nearby. "I'm moving us out of the trees." He called.
"Do it fast Michi."
Katja's grip on me tightened as another crash happened. This one was closer. "Duha! The horse is panicking and I can't clear the wheels and stop them from running off."
I kissed Katja. "I need to get us to safety alright?" She nodded loosening her grip.
I moved to the seat and took the reins. Michi kicked the rocks from the wheels and the wagon started to move. I looked back at Michi as he untied the other two horses and climbed onto one of them.
Turning back to look the way we were heading and keeping the horse slow I heard another crack. I saw the tree falling this time, and I gave us a little more speed. Michi looked up as the tree fell behind us. The horses stumbled as they moved across the shaking ground. I slowed them further to keep them from hurting themselves.
We came out of the trees to the road. I looked to the village as a building on the edge collapsed. "What do we do Duha?" Michi yelled over the crash of another tree and the loud boom of another building collapsing.
The wagon leached to the side making Katja scream again. "Come out here Pup." I shouted. We can't move like this! We need to wait for it to stop then help the people in the village. Katja nearly fell as she tried to step out of the wagon. I grabbed her and she clung to me. I looked over at Michi. "We can't move like this. We could hurt the horses or break the wagon. Just like the people in the village, we have to wait and hope it will stop." I put all the confidence I could in my voice to calm my pack down.
Michi smiled and Katja stopped shaking as much. The wagon lurched again making the horse shuffle with the weight of it. The wagon is unbalanced, it could tip if we don't do something. "Michi the wagon is unbalanced. Take Katja..."
"No mum... the horses." Katja said shakily.
I smiled at Katja handing the reins to her. "You are right. Keep us steady while I fix the imbalance."
Michi moved the horses to let Katja hold them too. Then darted to hold the side of the wagon. I climbed in the back and looked at the things. The cooker is unbalancing that side. I thought looking at it. I need to balance this waggon or lose it. Moving the heavy things from one side to the other was hard with the ground shaking. I tried to strap the things to the other side of the wagon as best I could, but it was harder than it should have been as the rocking of the wagon under me made me stumble constantly.
When I finished, the wagon leached, and this time, it didn't tip as much. I sighed with relief. "Is everyone alright?" I asked, panting from exertion.
Michi's voice came from the front of the wagon now. "We are fine my dear... are you?"
I moved carefully to the seat and looked out. "I'm fine..."
Katja looked spooked when she looked at my face. I knew blood trickled down from something that hit me while I moved it. Katja took out a hanky to dab at the place where I was bleeding while I watched the village. I could see spiders crawling over the houses coteing them in a fine web that shone as the buildings shifted with the earth. "I think this will end soon."
Michi frowned at me. "It will?"
I nodded. I feel it in my bones. I don't know what to say other than, it will end soon. I don't know if it is wolf instincts telling me that or the fact that the shaking feels less violent. More sad.
After another 20 minutes of shaking the world stopped its movement. Katja still shook next to me on the seat and the horses still whinnied and shifted, but at least the ground had stopped moving.
Michi tied the horses to the wagon and climbed in the back to tie down the things more. "I think this will happen again." I said my tone ferm.
"So do I," Michi said struggling with something in the back.
"What about the village mum?" I rubbed Katja's back.
What about them indeed! Do we go and make sure they are OK or do we stay clear? I looked over at the village and the closest house on the edge of it. It was no longer a house but a pile of rubble. If there are people trapped in those buildings they will need help. Did Reina know this would happen? Is this what she wanted me to stay for? I looked at my pack. We need to look to ourselves first.
"We will take care of ourselves then go to the village to help them. I need to sort out my wounds; Katja will help me with that, and Michi, you check the waggon for damage and the horses for wounds. Let's get to work!" I said clapping my hands together.
I climbed in the back of the wagon as Michi climbed out, Katja followed me after a moment and started to look for the first aid kit. I removed my shirt and looked at the cuts and bruises I had got from moving the things. When Michi climbed back in I was dressed again and had finished checking Katja out. "Are you wounded Michi?"
He shook his head. "The wagon is damaged, but the horses are fine."
I nodded feeling the shaking was coming back. "If we are going to get to the village we will need to get moving now." I said. He nodded and moved to the seat to drive the wagon. Katja sat on my lap and held me. She was still shaking like a leaf. "It's alright Pup. We will be alright."
"They don't want us." She whispered.
I kissed her head. "They are fools if they don't want the extra hands with..... Michi! Stop the wagon!"
He stopped us as the ground started to shake. The horses whinnied, and the wagon tipped again; this time, it didn't right itself the same way. The shaking didn't last long this time and seemed to be vibrating to a different tune. When it had stopped I let Katja lift her head from where I had tucked it to protect her.
"Duha...I don't think the wagon will move."
I sighed. "Come on, Pup, let's see the damage."
Katja stood a little shakerley on the leaning wagon. We climbed out the back and saw the wheel had partially collapsed. Michi stood looking at it. "This will not get us there." He said gesturing to it.
"Pup, you and Michi stay here. I will get us help."
Katja grabbed my arm. "Mum.... don't go." She whispered.
I hugged her tight. "It's ended Pup. I will bring someone to fix the wagon and help them if they need it." I let her go and Katja wiped her face. "You will be safe with Michi."
Turning I untied one of the horses and mounted it. "If you're not back by dark..." Michi started.
I smiled at Michi. "You will stay here until I return unless they come and help you. A command from your Alpha."
He sighed and nodded. "Alright."
I turned my horse towards the village. Walking the horse around the village, I found the people on the other side. I saw Eric and dismounted next to him, ignoring the glares I was getting from the others. "Hello again." I said smiling.
He gave me a weak smile. "Do you need that looking at?" He asked reaching for my head.
"Not at the moment... my wagon has a broken wheel and we are a little shaken up after whatever that was."
He nodded. "I will send someone to the wagon if you allow us to use your horse to move the broken buildings."
"Of course. We have two more with the wagon. Do you need help?"
He looked around him at the people who looked scared and wounded. "Bear is in the village looking for people trapped with your nose we could make short work of that. Oh, and the boy is fine. He is with Swallow."
I nodded feeling relieved. "I will go and find Bear then."
I left him to his work and walked into the village. Spiders were running over the buildings covering them with web. I saw the leader of this group walking away from Kyros. I stopped as he looked at the building behind him. There is a sound from that building. It's going to collapse!
Running forward I knew this was a dumb idea. Kyros turned from the building as the sound became louder. He looked at it as it started to fall towards him. I tried to run faster. It will kill him if it lands on him. It will kill me if it lands on me... I have to try.
The building slid closer to him and he looked up at it without moving.
I watched Mum ride off on the horse while Michi muttered to himself about the wheel. She turned, giving the village a wide berth, disappearing behind it. "Pup... you don't need to watch for her."
"I know."
Michi sighed and hugged me from behind. "We are all fine Pup."
I nodded. "We have no reason to be worried for her. She is getting us help and probably offering help to the others."
He let me go and led me to the waggon. "She didn't take her medicine..."
Michi stopped and looked back at the village. "Well, if she gets dizzy, there are people there to help her."
"They don't like her."
Michi sighed and knelt in front of me. "I'm worried about her too but we can't think about her right now. All we can do is try and hitch this axle to the other horse and get the waggon moving. As soon as we do that, we will get to her."
I nodded, and he stood. We tied ropes to the wheel, and Michi threw them over the top, then we tied ropes to the saddle of the other horse that had a big loop on the other end. We both stopped when we heard people approaching.
"Give us your horses!" The big man with the axe from before yelled as he got close.
Michi crossed his arms as I gripped the stave on the horse's saddle. "We need them to get our wagon to the village."
"You're not welcome there." The big man said.
Michi smiled. "Then why would I give you my horses? We are trying to come and help."
All conversation stopped as a loud crash echoed through the valley making us all look to the village. "Help us get our wagon to the village. Then, you will have two more hands to help you. It sounds like you need it."
The big man turned back to us at my words. "We were sent here to help them. Do you want that Bear to find out we took their horses and left them stranded Elephant?" A small man said patting the big man's arm.
The big man sighed and dismounted his horse. Between the new people and us, we were able to tip the waggon and slip the axle into the rope loop around the horse. The waggon settled back on the wheels. I climbed up on the horse and Michi climbed onto the wagon.
We moved with our escort towards the village. As we got closer we heard the shouts and saw the flurry of activity. Our escort abandoned us as someone yelled about Bear being trapped.
I felt a tightness in my chest as we moved around the edge of the village. I hope mum is alright.
I groaned as I tried to move. "Stay still Kyros." The voice was calm but pained. It also sounded familiar.
"What happened?"
"The building collapsed."
Something moved against my side and the other voice groaned. "Who are you?"
"Duha... we met in the village where you were being the smith."
Duha the wolf of the battlefield. So Reina was right. She really is here. Well, that is a good thing for us. We could do with her on our side. "Do I have you to thank for my life right now?"
She grunted again moving against me. "Don't thank me yet. We are stuck and my leg is trapped."
I reached out and gripped her shoulder with my free hand. "We will be alright."
She flinched from my hand and sighed. "Not if we don't get free soon. I'm bleeding a lot."
I looked around the dim space coughing at the dust that was still settling around us. I could see Duha lying on her side next to me. She held a pole that was holding the beam that held the piece of building above us. The pole had snapped and impaled her leg. She moved again and I saw the lower half of her leg was trapped under some dabre. Every time she moved more dust came down.
"Duha stop moving. You are destabilizing the stuff on top of us."
She twisted to look at me her yellow eyes meeting mine. "Are you in pain?" She asked softly.
"Of course, I'm in pain! My left-hand side is pinned."
Her eyes scanned my body. "I hear people. They are moving things but they are in the wrong place. Did you set up something to help people be found in the rubble?"
I nodded and whistled. She smiled and whistled with me. The sounds of people stopped. "I think they heard us." Duha said.
We whistled again until the sounds of people came close. "WE ARE HERE!" I screamed.
"They are here! Dig carefully and bring Giraffe here." Great he is never going to let me forget this.
"Well, this is good.... I hope they..." Duha slumped mid-sentence.
"YOU NEED TO HURRY. THE PERSON WITH ME JUST PASSED OUT! SHE IS BLEEDING." I yelled at the top of my lungs.
"We are going as fast as we dare." The voice that came back was so muffled I couldn't recognise who it was.
I grabbed a torn piece of curtain and pressed it to her leg. I'm sorry Duha. I don't mean to grab at you but I need to stop this bleeding. As I lay there with a blood-soaked cloth held to the top of this woman's leg, I listened to the efforts of the group trying to get us out.
I could almost see what was happening above me. Spiders warping web around large pieces of building and dragging them away. The people would be using shovels to dig at the loose debris, and yet more spiders would be using their webs to stabilize sections of the fallen building to the buildings around it.
Duha stared next to me. "Stay still Duha. They are working on getting us out."
"Pup... where..." She slumped again.
That is not blood loss. Didn't Eric say she had something.... low blood pressure? Would that make her blood loss affect her worse?
