Chapter 5
Yuki's POV
My last summer in elementary school, there was a number of record-breaking storms. Ame started to go into the mountains all the time. Emiko would go to school and go into the mountains now and again. They seemed to be very worried about the effects of the heave rains on Sensei and the plans and animals of the mountains.
Ame's POV
It was raining and Emiko and I were looking around. We walked on a fallen tree. We checked our surroundings and at all the damage, till I heard Emiko gasp. I looked at her and seen her looking down. I followed her gaze and seen a ruined nest, and new born baby birds, dead, surrounding the broken nest.
Later on we made our way home. As we got near the door, we seen Mum in the living room, fixing my old Wolf toy. She then cried out our names once she seen us walk inside out of the rain.
"Where have you been all this time?" She asked us, as she put a hand on one of our shoulders. "You're cold. Hang on, I'll get the bath ready." She said as she made her way to the bathroom.
"Sensei... hurt his leg, and he can't move." Emiko said, stopping Mum in her tracks. "He'll probably die soon." She said, about to cry.
"Some one has to take over all the things he has been doing on the mountain." I said.
"Ame. Emiko. You can't go into the mountains anymore. Do you understand?" Mum said as she stood in front of us. "Youse are only ten years old. You're still children!" Mum yelled as she shock us. "Even if a ten-year-old wolf is an adult, you're still..." She said but stopped and gasped. She then let go of us and just started at us. "Please. Please don't go into the mountains anymore. Please... For me." She begged. Emiko and I opened our mouths in shock, and looked at her.
Yuki's POV
Everyone at school has been talking about Sohei's Mum getting remarried and stuff. Right now I was standing in the hall, thinking, while Sohei was playing basketball with all his mates. I was torn away from my thoughts when I heard the ball go threw the hop and the ones on Sohie's team screamed out cheers.
I spent the rest of the day, being quiet. I haven t really talked as much as I did before, before I had the fight with Ame and Emiko got hurt because of it. When I got home, everything was quiet, we had dinner, I did my homework, we had our baths, got ready for bed and went to bed. Still been like tat since the fight, hardly any talking to one another.
Emiko's POV
It was early morning, still dark outside, and I could tell something bad was going to happen tomorrow, I couldn't sleep, because of that felling. I sat up in bed, and so did Ame, we both thought the same thing. We both got out off bed and made our way out of the room. We looked back inside the room, at mums sleepy face and then closed the door. As we opened the front door, we just stood there, looking outside like a guard dog. We then sat down at the door mat, and watched the outside.
We sat there watching the tress and grass dancing with the wind, and stayed there till morning. When everyone was awake, we had the radio going.it said that it would be sunny during the day, but that heavy rains will come during the evening all the way threw night. Yuki was just putting her shoes on, and was then about to leave for school.
"Yuki..." Ame said, as we walked up to her.
"Um." She hummed.
"Stay home today." I said.
"What?" She asked, confused.
"Stay with Mum." Ame said.
"Why?" She asked, as she stood up.
"You'll miss he bus..." Mum said as she walked out.
"I know!" Yuki replied, with a giggle. "Youse stay home with her." She said, turning back to Ame and I. "I'm leaving!" She yelled as she ran off.
"Take care!!" Mum yelled out to her. I'm was silent for a while, till mum called mine and Ame's name, but we didn't listen. But when she yelled it, we jumped and turned to her. She looked angry at us, but that then turned into a smile. "Come inside." She said.
Yuki's POV
I was doing maths right now. It was lovely weather outside, till dark clouds raced in. Blocking the beautiful, warm sun. The wind then started to pick up and blew the curtains high in the air.
Hana's POV
I was washing up the dishes listening to the radio. It talked about the storm, getting closer and as it said that, the wind picked up. I rushed outside to get the laundry off the line. After that Ame and Emiko helped me cover the doors, so they wouldn't get damaged by the storm. I had trouble doing it, the wind seemed to be blowing me around the place. Ame and Emiko didn't seem to have trouble like I did, but that would probably be cause being a wolf child
Not long after it started to rain. When it pored down, Ame, Emiko and I were inside. Ame was sitting at the kitchen table doing nothing and Emiko was helping me fold the clothes. They were both very quiet. A few seconds latter thunder was heard and then the power went out. I gasped in fear at first, but it didn't even faze Ame and Emiko, they acted like it never happened. I then walked around to find the power box, and restarted the engine.
Ame's POV
I was sitting there silent, mum just walked of to run the power back on and I could fell Emiko looking at me. I looked at her and I knew what she was thinking.
"We need to go." I said and she nodded her head.
We then made our way to the ground door, as we exited the house, we heard Mum call us, asking if we wanted to go with her to pick up Yuki, but we kept walking. When she ran out the house calling for us, we didn't hear her, probably. We kept walking, like we were under control of something. We walked up the hill and then entered the forest.
We transformed and ran. After a while, in the distance we heard mum call for us and we made our way slowly toward her voice.
Yuki's POV
Everyone was nearly gone, Mum hasn't come picked me up yet, and Sohei still hasn't come back yet.
"Sou's taking a long time." I said, using his nick name. I then started to get on my feet and decided to go look for him. The little boy I and girl I was sitting with asked where I was going but I kept running.
After a while I found him sitting at his desk in our classroom. By looks he was asleep and just woke up. When he seen me in the corner of his eye, he jumped and asked me why still here.
"Because...you were being slow." I replied.
After that we walked back to the hall, the two little kids, and the teachers were gone. Our bags were still there and it was getting cold. We picked up our bags and he told me to follow him, so I did, while hugging myself, to keep warm.
We started to talk, about if no one ever comes for us, and we have to spend forever in this school. We talked about how we're tired of being a kid and that we wanted to grow up.
Emiko's POV
It was night time and I just seen a mum fall down a really steep hill, and when she reached the bottom, she looked beat up. She had cuts and bruises and I'm sure her ankle was twisted. But before she blacked out she started to mumble something.
"Ame... Emiko... Their probably shivering somewhere... Their probable lost... crying... I have to... protect... them... I have to... protect..." She mumbled as she blacked out.
Yuki's POV
"He's gone." Sohei said, as we stopped hiding.
"My heart's still pounding. Hey, why did we hide?" I asked. "Hey!" I said, when he didn't answer. It was quiet till I decided to look out the window, only to see the road flooded. "It's like an ocean. I feel like it's going to suck me in." I said braking the silents. "Will we really end up living her secretly?" I asked.
"If our parents don't come, then we have no choice, do we?" He said.
"Why? Your Mom will come for sure." I said.
"No, she won't." She disagreed.
"Why not? She's..." I said but stopped.
"My Mom got married. And she's having a baby. So one else it's born, I won't be needed anymore." He said.
"But she was so worried about you..." I pointed out.
"I'm fine with that, though. I'll run away from home and become a boxer or a wrestler. I'll live like a lone wolf. What do you think? Will it work?" He asked.
"You'll be defeated in a second. You have no muscles." I answered truthfully.
"I'll train. I'll train and live on my own." He said in a deep serious voice. I gasped and when he Hurd me, he looked at me and smiled.
"Sou, I want to be like you, and be able to smile even when I'm telling the truth." I said as I reached to open the window, letting the wind in, blowing the curtains and my hair around. I closed my eyes for a mer moment then opened them again and looked at Sohei, only to see him watching me curiously. "Sou... That day, the wolf that hurt you was me..." I said, as the curtain blew in front of me, making sure Sohei and I couldn't see one another. When it blew between us, I transformed. "It was me." I said when Sohei could see my wolf form.
"I kept thinking that I hat to say something. It hurt to hold it in." I said, as I turned back to my human self.
"I already knew. I knew the whole time. I didn't tell anyone your secret. I won't tell. So... don't cry anymore." She said, as I cried with joy.
"I'm not crying, these are drops of rain." I lied, laughing. "Thank you." I said to him, as I sniffled.
Ame's POV
As Emiko and I walked in wolf form, we found Mum, unconscious.
"Oh, Mum. I'm sorry." Emiko said.
I then turned back into a human and picked Mum up, like how she carried us as kids, we then walked side by side to the school. When we got there it stopped raining, and the road wasn't fluffed like before. I placed her gently on the ground and we started to walk away.
"Ame? Emiko?" I heard Mum question behind us. But we didn't listen and we transformed into a wolf. "Oh, Ame! Emiko!" She called out, causing us to stop and look back at her. "Are you going to leave? But... I still haven't been able to do anything for you." She asked, making Emiko and I gasp, and for us to fully turn around to face her. "I still haven't... But your still..." She cried.
We could take it anymore, we were about to cry ourselves and we didn't want to see her cry, so we ran back into the forest, towards the mountains.
"Wait!!" She cried out. "Ame! Emiko!" She yelled. "Ame...! Emiko...!" She screamed. "Don't go!" She cried.
But it was too late, we already reached the top of the mountain and when we looked down on her, she was on her knees crying. We looked at each other and nodded. We bowed our heads, taking a deep breath. When we were ready we lifter our heads, facing the sky and let out a loud howl, as the sun came up. When we finished our howl, we looked back down at Mum, one last time and then ran off, side by side.
Yuki's POV
Mother said that she would never forget that morning. The freshly washed beech leaves... The freshly washed spider webs... The freshly washed sky... Everything glittering under the sun... Like the world had been reborn overnight. That was what Mother thought.
The next year, I left home to live in the dorms at the junior high school. Looking back on the twelve years she spent raising us, Mither smiled, saying that it was over in a moment, like a fairy talk. She smiled ver satisfied, looking off into the distance at a far-off mountain peak. Looking at that smile, I was very happy. Mother is living quietly in that mountain house even now.
Hana's POV
I was sitting down having lunch. I lived alone, but I don't fell alone. I looked at my loves picture on his license that sat down in front of a vase of flowers. I place a bit off food in front of the picture, as an offering for him. I smiled at the picture, till suddenly the wind picked up. I looked outside and heard two wolf howls. It was Ame and Emiko. I was happy they were happy. I looked back at the picture, and laughed.
