Chapter Twenty Six: Hokage-sama

Third Person POV___

Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura begrudgingly sat a few tables away from the table where the two sannin were.

They were quietly eating their food. Sakura and Sasuke were trying to be as quiet as possible so that Naruto could try and eavesdrop on the conversation. But despite his excellent hearing he could barely make out the hushed whispers of the sanin.

But by the shaking of Tsunade's shoulders and serious look on Jiraiya's face. They could tell that the conversation was either getting heated or it was emotional.

"I don't know what or how they did it, but I can't understand anything they are saying." Naruto huffed under his breath as he stabbed his fork down on his food.

Sakura sucked her teeth and scowled. "Well it seems like the Hokage announcement might not be the only thing they are talking about." She sighed trying not to show her outward disappointment.

"Do you think it could be some more classified stuff?" Naruto asked in a low whisper. Sakura shrugged before responding. "Possibly, nothing we genin would be allowed to hear." She added while carefully covering her food filled mouth.

Sasuke was silently watching Tsunade, personally he felt annoyed by her. So what if she was the last Senju left, the least she could do was carry her clan name with pride. He felt mad and wasn't even sure why.

He aggressively began to chew faster as he tried to calm down the inner rage he felt. But glancing over at the woman who would be Hokage drinking like a fish and wallowing in self pity made him angrier by each passing second.

Personally, if he was at her caliber he wouldn't lay around wallowing in self pity. Especially in some no name bar in the fire country when he could have been taking revenge on the people that killed his family in the first place.

Cause it's not like the senju killed themselves. There were probably some people alive that had contributed to their deaths and there she was wallowing- "Hey sasuke, do you want us to order more side dishes? You seem really hungry." Sakura interrupted his train of thought and the boy sat up straight and looked down at the empty side dish bowls that he had already cleared out.

"Uh, yeah." he nodded before letting out a stiff sigh. "You okay?" Naruto asked, concerned laced in his voice.

"Just tired." Sasuke muttered as Sakura flagged a waitress down and ordered more side dishes.

"You were glaring at her really hard.... and with your sharingan." Naruto stated as he took a big chunk of meat and put it in his mouth. Sasuke was taken back, he hadn't even realized his sharingan had turned on.

"I didn't notice I turned them on." He muttered as he sat back slightly on his seat.

"There must've been something you really don't like about her." Sakura stated in a quiet whisper.

Sasuke gripped his chopsticks a little harder. " I don't know. Maybe it was just cause she's the last Senju, but she's living like -" Sasuke makes a hand gesture towards the whole restaurant.

Sakura nods. When she had heard Tsunade speak about her family it had tugged at her heartstrings and hearing that she was the last of her clan had her almost glancing over at Sasuke.

How many times did you meet someone in a similar situation as Sasuke? Not many, but neither Naruto or Sakura would say that they saw the similarity out loud. They knew better than to carelessly bring up Sasuke's past infront of him.

"Don't worry, we will be stronger than her and Jiraiya before we set off to our final goal." Naruto stated giving Sasuke a pat on the back.

Sasuke felt relieved at that statement because he was right.  His tense shoulders loosened up a bit and he nodded before he calmly began to eat again.

"Yeah, I'm .... " Sasuke was quiet he was about to say' I'm not going to end up like her.' but he decided against finishing the sentence.

"Oh look the waitress is coming with our food." Naruto grinned excitedly as he perked up and eagerly watched the waitress set down more side dishes.

"Let's eat well and try and get some training in. For all we know, we will be on our way back to Konoha by tomorrow." Sakura grinned as she took a large amount of kimichi from the small saucers and ate it.

It didn't take long for them to finish eating and pay for their meals. They stayed at the table talking amongst themselves on the gossip they were overhearing from the bar while they waited for Tsunade and Jiraiya to finish speaking.

"I see you three are having the time of your lives with all the chitchat." Jiraiya chuckled as he walked up to the table the three of them were at. They had noticed him coming since they had been on the look out.

"Yup." Sakura smiled up at the old sannin before she looked over at Tsunade.

"So are we heading back to the village?" Naruto asked and Jiraiya shook his head. " We will stay here for a week or so while Tsunade gets ready to head back to Konoha. Then we are all going to be heading back so you three will still have a chance to get some training from me. Be grateful brats. Shinobi of every rank would kill to have your golden luck." Jiraiya laughed.

"Thank you, Jiraiya Sensei." Both Sakura and Sasuke chorused and Jiraiya clicked his teeth. "I guess you are finally learning some respect."  He stated smugly before ushering them to get up.

"We will stay in the same inn as Tsunade. so come." He stated and the three of them quickly got up and followed behind him.

All six of them left the bar and followed Tsunade and Shizune to their inn. Naruto had been quick to notice how Tsunade avoided making eye contact with him or looking at him. It wasn't too odd, in the past it was something he was accustomed to, but he was curious why she was going out of her way to ignore him in particular.

Well maybe it wasn't that he was curious. Deep down he had already realized the why. The first meeting had given him all the answers, but it wasn't a nice feeling having to acknowledge them.

Kushina, his mother was Tsunade's niece that meant that Tsunade was like his great aunt. Knowing that made him feel odd, because that was legitimate family.

Minato, the fourth hokage and his mother, he knew what that all meant. But having to accept all of it as reality made his stomach turn. Especially with how he was treated as a kid, sure it was a very distant memory, but it was something that he wasn't going to easily forget.

As they waited for Jiraiya to rent out the rooms, Naruto's mind was in a bit of shambles. His entire mood had soured on the way to the Inn and all he wanted was a hot bath and to lay in bed.

Was he angry? Angry that all of this was kept from him and that he grew up the way he did? And the old man Hokage had died without ever telling him anything. Any and all questions that he had about his upbringing were going to go mostly unanswered.

He doubted that Tsunade even knew he was alive, Jiriaya was on missions, and the one that was suppose to keep an eye on him was the Hokage and that didn't turn out well. That is until Kiro kaa-san came to the picture.

How was he suppose to demand answers from a dead man? Naruto was swarmed with emotions of anger and grief, he didn't know if he was mad that the old man died or sad that he didn't even get to say goodbye to him.

It was an influx of emotions that he didn't know how to control. But he tried his best to keep it hidden, not that he did to well though since everyone noticed. Tsunade and Shizune had thought him to be a more quiet and reserved type seeing how he wasn't being his usually happy self.

Sasuke wasn't doing much better either, and he wasn't dumb. Despite how little emotional intelligence he had Sasuke was still a very talented shinobi and although he was triggered by Tsunade, He could easily tell that Naruto was the one that was off put the most.

He wasn't sure what had caused his mood to sour, but it was quite obvious to him at least. 'But then again Naurto had recently lost someone close to him so maybe...' Sasuke's thoughts trailed off.

Sakura was the one that was the more levelheaded at the moment. Seeing both Sasuke and Naruto struggle made her heartache. It wasn't like she could comfort them here in public and she wasn't even sure what had upset them.

Naruto not smiling, and being upset the way he was now was rare. Before it had been unheard of, but since the Third Hokage had passed away there were times where he would suddenly frown and get upset. It was not like she could tell him it would be alright, or pat his back and tell him to cheer up.

He had just lost the only person he considered family, so telling him it was alright and to cheer up would be like dismissing the feeling of loss that he had, right? Sasuke had mentioned how much he had hated the pity people gave him all the time. And Sakura had already expressed her condolences, there was no need for her to do so again. Just stand by his side while he works through all of his emotions and give him support.

'He's grieving, just give him a smile and tell him you are going to be there for him no matter what.' She thought to herself with a resolute nod.

Meanwhile when it came to Sasuke she didn't know what to say. They liked to joke around alot by calling him a princess, but in reality there was some merit to it.

Despite how cold and emotionless he appeared to be, he was actually pretty sensitive. All of the cold exterior was a front because he was afraid of being rejected and pushed away. He also was one to pay close attention to details that others would miss. Which was the cause of most of their troubles, him trying to exclude himself from situations so that that they wouldn't have a chance to exclude him first and looking too deep into trivial things and overthinking which led his wild assumptions.

A 'I abandon you first before you can abandon me so now it doesn't hurt mentality.' which at times could cause major issues.  So knowing what he was upset about could be a  hit and miss and usually involved alot of prodding.

The one who usually got the answers out of him was Naruto, but at the moment he was out for the count.

And although Sakura could step up to the plate, she was unsure on how to. Sure, they were close and she cared for them both. Without Naruto's carefree attitude to help her she was unsure on how to help Sasuke without accidentally saying something out of line.

When Jiraiya finally got the room he hurried them to the room and gave the a look over. "What's with the long faces?" He asked in a slightly annoyed tone.

All three of them became awkward for a moment as they fell into silence. Jiraiya looked at them with a tired look.

"What she said was fucked up." Sasuke stated coldly. "You were the fourth hokage's teacher right? Well that was rude as fuck to throw his death in your face. Me personally? I wouldn't let that slide. Second, So what if she's the last of her clan. The least she could do is have is some pride in what her clan and family did as actual shinobi. I .." Sasuke scowled deeply unsure on how to proceed.

The entire interaction had rubbed him the wrong way, and he was completely unaware that he had been triggered by the things  she had said. It also didn't help that although they both lost their families the way they reacted and lived was different ways.

On the other hand he found her to be really insensitive and a real bitch. He wasn't sure if he could see her as  Hokage material. And now kinda of knowing the Sannin, maybe Jiraiya was the sanest out of the three, seeing as how one was a psychopathic killer, the other a wallowing coward and well the only active and proper sannin being Jiraiya.

Jiraiya stared at the young Uchiha in disbelief, out of the three kids that he had dragged along with him, Sasuke seemed to be the most stuck up. But to think the kid got offended for him was actually surprising.

"I guess it might seem that way. She did try to hit a sore spot." Jiraiya sheepishly replied. Naruto frowned even more. "Why would she say that though? Kushina was her.... niece and she just said all of that with no remorse." Naruto spoke up, his voice slightly trembling.

All of them were quiet for a moment before Jiraiya spoke up, "Sometimes people who are hurt very deeply, say things to make everyone else feel the same way they do. "

Naruto was quiet as he wiped a tear from his face. "Yeah, I guess so." He mumbled as he tried to stop the tears.

"I don't blame her too much. Although she did cross the line when she spoke of Minato and Kushina and my previous genin team." Jiraiya sighed, before looking over the three of them.

"At the end of the day she's the one that is probably going to be the next Hokage so-"  He was cut off by Naruto.

"No way! She can't be the Hokage, Hokage is someone who the village admires because of their work and dedication. They are the strongest shinobi in the village and well she's nothing like the old man. Just cause her family had Hokage doesn't mean she should be Hokage!" Naruto yelled out as there was a knock on the door.

Jiraiya glanced over his shoulder and hurried to the door only to see Tsunade standing at the door. "I just talked with Shizune." She started off as she walked into the room. "about what day we should leave and I've reduced the amount of days I had rented out my room for."

"But, when I came to tell you I overheard a thing or two. And as they said 'Me personally, I wouldn't let that slide.' "
