Chapter 74 || Apologies
Isaac POV*
"Wait Marc-" I watch as Marc storms out of the shop, leaving my dad standing there. I carefully walked up to him. "What's wrong?" I asked, he shook his head confused.
"I don't know- he just suddenly ran off." He sighed.
"Why- what did you say," I asked a si stared at the door.
"Nothing? I think" he turned around.
"Shouldn't you go after him or something?" I suggested. Dad looked at the door for a second but shook his head.
"Let's just leave it for now," He said, making his way to the back. "Besides, we still need to talk." He said to me as he completely left the room, leaving me alone.
I eventually went after him, joining him in the living area. He was sitting on the couch, going through his book as I sat down across him, getting more nervous by the second.
He stayed silent for a while, I thought about saying something but the tension in the room was too much. So instead I just sat there silently, waiting for him to start.
He put his book down and looked over at me. "So is there anything else I should know?" He asked. I reluctantly shook my head. "Are you sure..." he asked again.
"The most important thing." I tried, but he wasn't amused.
I let out a sigh, "well, there's a little bit more to it, yes." I started. "It wasn't just me- we had help." He sat up a little.
"From Ava?" He asked, I shook my head.
"Actually she didn't know about this until a couple of days ago..." I said.
"She was really against it when I told her my plans," I continued, "so I didn't ask her, I did it without her."
"So when you said you were with her..." he started,
"she also had no idea where I was..." I finished.
"Then who helped you?" Dad asked as he was getting impatient.
"Well, you remember Lukas... and Aubrey." He nodded, "Wait- those people you met in the woods?" He asked.
"Well, yeah, them. They helped."
He looked at me surprised. As he thought for a second. "Why-" he started.
"You met these two not even a week before and all of a sudden they decide to help you with something big like breaking someone out of jail..." he asked.
I nodded carefully. "They, well-" I debated telling him the whole truth. I had already told him most of it. But I'm not sure he would survive if I did. "They agreed it was wrong, what they did," I said.
That wasn't a lie. But not the whole reason they did what they did.
He sat across from me silently. He ran his hands through his hair as he let it all sink in. I waited anxiously for him to start speaking again.
He let out a sigh as he turned his attention back to me. "So where are you staying now?"
"Well, that's-"
"Is it safe?" He added before I could answer. "You don't have to tell me the location- just- is it safe?"
I nodded. "We're pretty sure it is."
"The hunters don't know about it?" He sighed.
"They do... but they don't know we're there," I said back. At least I hope they don't.
He nodded, trying his best to get on board with all of this. "So all of you are staying there?" He continued interrogating me.
"Well, yeah. We are" I nodded.
"And that's where you ran off to last time?" I nodded again.
It got quiet again and I started to feel quilts again for what happened last time. He must've noticed as he let out a sigh and spoke again. "Listen about then-" he started.
"No it's okay- it's my fault," I stopped him. "I overreacted."
"No, you didn't. I shouldn't have said what I said. Not that way-" he shot back. "I was upset and I said things I shouldn't have. I'm sorry".
"I shouldn't have left things like that though, without telling you," I said back. "I'm sorry I hid so much from you."
"I see now that you had a good reason." He smiled.
I looked away. "That doesn't apply to everything," I said quietly.
The reason I struggled to tell him about my real relationship with Lukas wasn't that I was protecting anyone. Everyone who should, already knows. The reason I can't tell him is that I'm scared. Scared of how he would react.
He looked up at me confused. "What do you mean?" He asked.
But I don't have to be scared of it anymore. I already know his rescuing from last time. And I'm pretty sure the worst was behind me. The only last thing he could get angry about was that I hid it. But we were already talking g about it. So it was just one last thing to come clean about.
"There's one more thing..." I started. His expression relaxed as he leaned in closer to listen.
"You were right..." j said vaguely as I avoided eye contact.
"Right about what?" He asked confused as he waited.
"About these," I said as I gestured to my neck. The marks he had previously mentioned had mostly faded. But by his reaction, he realized what I meant anyway.
"You mean?-" He started. "Who-"
"Lukas," I said quickly. Still looking away. I didn't really want to see his reaction after all.
He stayed quiet for a bit. When I looked back at him he smiled. "That actually makes a lot of sense." He said.
"What do you mean?" I asked as I looked back at him.
"It explains why they helped you even though you were a stranger." He laughed. "And just a lot of your behavior lately?" He added.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I laughed. The awkwardness faded a little.
"It's nothing." He smirked. "Thanks for being honest."
I nodded. "Yeah, sorry for not being so earlier.
He didn't say much after that. Neither did it. After some small talk about mostly nothing. Aside from him trying to not so subtly ask me more about everything.
I felt a little better now that everything was out. Literally. I hated how much I had been lying to him. It also helped a lot that he didn't try to interfere with us so much. He trusted me, trusted us, enough to let us do it ourselves. But he was also willing to help us where needed.
For once I felt fully confident we could actually do this.
After a while, we both got up and decided to do other things. Which mostly consisted of me catching up on some chores as usual. Which I won't be doing much of after this.
I stayed home for dinner. I wasn't going to stay the night anymore. Going to and from the church is blind to be noticed by people eventually, and we've been doing it too much lately. We should stop before someone catches us... again.
