Igneous - Chapter 23
She awoke to hear birds twittering in her ears, a soothingly melody that she had never heard before - except for last night, of course.
They slept on branches above the earth for 'safety', apparently.
But safety had finally proven useful as underneath them, Igneous could smell something dead.
She bolted upright and stirred the others.
"Wake up idiots, something's dead under us!"
This caused WaveDrift to shriek and lose his balance on the tree, falling off of it and landing on the ground with a thud.
Truth' rushed to see if he was alright (though causing a bud of jealousy to heaten Igneous's cheeks), diving off the branch to him.
She huffed and joined the lovebirds, already in a cranky mood due to this absurd friend-zoning triangle.
She just desperately hoped that she wasn't the third wheel in this situation.
Truth' put on a cute worried face for Wave' which made Igneous blush and look away as he got up.
Qibli had left last night after that, wishing them good luck in the journey ahead.
They all soon got to their feet as Igneous followed the scent - having the best nose of them all - back to the tunnel by a nearby tree, which of where a dead sloth lay.
"Uhh...."
She gagged and motioned for the others to follow.
"Well- pleasant surprise."
Truth' chirped and began to drag WaveDrift through the air.
"No time to waste! More deaths by the minute, LETS GO!"
They all hastily flew into the morning sky, trying to get the disgusting scent out of their noses....
They flew for mere minutes, which soon turned into hours, then into days.
Five days went by until an island was spotted, by this time they were all heaving to keep their eyes open, thirst prying their stomachs and tired limbs all around.
Igneous pointed it out first, shouting for her friends to follow.
"Land! Land land land LAND!"
She managed to shout out as her and her comrades fell onto the sand, panting in exhaustion.
Truth' went over and toppled onto WaveDrift's side, causing him to turn a dark shade of red and curiously look away towards the ocean.
They all layer there, gasping in the now awkward silence.
Truth' huffed.
"Well, not the worst time for some food, yes?"
They nodded and she went over to Igneous, whispering in her ear.
"Look, I'm sorry that.. you know, you like him too. Work it out, k?"
And she flew away, leaving Igneous flabbergasted.
Huh.... Ohhhh. She thinks that- oh.
WaveDrift just stared blankly at her, then went to follow Truth', laughing as he tugged her into the sand, twinning tails and exchanging roasts.
She just glared back and huffed over to another side of the tiny island, muttering strings of hisses.
Dumb, stupid, dumb, roach-eater, child-of-Death toe-licking son-of-a-toad.
But something was wrong.
She stopped hissing and looked around, still trying to catch her breath.
Was that a whiff of.. color she saw?
Oh spirits, it's a Spirit!
She thought excitedly, waving.
"Hello, Spirit!"
The Spirit couldn't talk or show itself to her, but she was nevertheless happy to have some company.
But it was not a Spirit.
A WindWing suddenly hurled itself at her, closing her mouth and dragging her struggling self to the water.
No!
Waves of light filled her vision as he head was pushed under, chuckling gleefully, screams heard from far away.
But it was too late, as Igneous was dragged under and her last bubbles were released, she felt the grip ease off of her neck. Her talons and wings tinged as a spirits voice slowly welcomed her, her eyes drooping shut.
It was a good life, for sure.
Truth' and Wave' saved it, and I'll remember them for that forever.
She felt herself enter the spirit world as she watched; waited, for them to finish.
For them to end the endless war.
