WoF: End of the War
I snorted in disgust as I soared down to the clearing near MY stronghold. Hundreds, no, thousands, of dragons lined the area. I couldn't believe that those ungrateful little worms had invited me, the future SandWing queen, to a 'friendly' talk about who should be queen. I would make the Sand kingdom great again, and me alone.
I shook out of my trance as the sandy ground neared. My heart thumped, which I never thought it would, as I touched my cold talons to the warm ground. A path cleared as I slithered through the crowd, tail dragging. A few dragons tried to step forward to confront me about who SHOULD be queen, but a harsh push with my wings and a threatening stare in their direction shook them off.
With an easy shove, I threw myself forward into the middle of the clearing. Five dragonets, who I recognized as the all powerful 'Dragonets of Destiny', stood near a stone well. My sisters, Blister and Blaze, stood beside them, and many tribes of dragons lined the edges. I smirked, swiping my talon across the sand and forming a line.
"Sister." Blister hissed cunningly. She may have been smart, but who was to say that she could rule a kingdom? And Blaze, well, she paid no attention. She continued adjusting her jewelry (I had hardly ever seen her without it. But then again, I hated her and spent most of my time in my room instead of talking to her.), which was a sliver and emerald necklace and bracelet set.
I smiled, a silent but deadly gaze that settled over the crowd. A few young dragonets gasped, and I felt a sudden urge to comfort them. Stop it, Burn! I told myself angrily. You don't think like that. My wings tilted back, I looked quizzically to the dragonets. A chill seemed to come over them, sending a shiver through the crowd.
"Well?" I asked powerfully, fiercely. The young and deformed SandWing stepped forward. She looked around, then trotted to a mound of sand where my mother's grave lay. I couldn't make out what she was doing, although I could see that she was digging with my brother's scavenger. Soon other dragons joined her, and finally they pulled out a tattered brown bag of gems.
"Here is Queen Oasis's treasure!" She yelled, holding up the bag, which was spilling jewels. "And this...this is the Eye of Onyx." The little SandWing began lifting a shining black and gold necklace out of the bag. But as her talons left the cover of the fabric, she began twitching violently and lightning sparks flew out of her talons where they touched the stone.
The SeaWing let out a worried yelp. "Sunny! Stop! LET IT GO!" She screamed, and even as Sunny tried to release the necklace, her talons wouldn't, or rather couldn't, unwrap themselves. The treasure sent out shocks of lightning, which convulsed her body. Soon, all that remained was a pile of black ash. Many dragons let out cries of agony, but the worse were the dragonets of the prophecy. The SeaWing seemed to not be able to take it, zooming into the night sky, followed by another SeaWing, this one flashing stripes after her.
The next event wasn't quite as expected, either. The next thing I knew the two dragonbite vipers I had given to Blister were on the loose, tumbling underfoot. I zipped up, staring woefully at the twisting, turning shapes below me. The NightWing, Starflight, sat on the edge of the clearing, mourning his lost friend, when the viper attacked. A large, burly MudWing threw himself in front, taking the bite instead.
A scream echoed through the courtyard. The poison in the MudWing's leg was spreading fast, a black, spider-like form spreading through the body. Nobody was there to help, and he let out a few jagged breaths before whispering something to Starflight, smiling, then falling limp. Starflight seemed to collapse, and for a minute even I thought he was dead.
And my sisters? Well, one of them was dead, and the other was holding up the Eye of Onyx. I smiled, waiting for her to crumple and burn like Sunny had, but instead she sat there, holding up the jewelry. A few, although it seemed like all, startled dragons gasped with disbelief. I was one of them.
"Ha! I am the new SandWing queen! I shall rule this kingdom!" Blister yelled triumphantly. I opened my mouth to protest, but all that came out was a small puff of air. Blister looked around at the dragons surrounding her. She looked at me as if daring me to fight her for it. I nodded respectfully to her, a thing I never thought I would have done. "The throne is yours. I respect that."
Blister's eyes were soft, a look I hadn't seen in a long time. I shot her a toothy smile, before turning to the crowd. "This is your new queen. I have too much to answer for." My sister looked at me, confused, and I lifted off. My sandy wings beat hard as I flew away from my old stronghold. This war had been ended.
That struck a thought. Did this really have to turn into a war? The few dragons that had followed me, the number being about three truly loyal soldiers, kept quiet, seeming to know that I was thinking. I felt upset that I wasn't chosen, but my little sister was happy, and she hadn't been for who knows how long. And as of right now, that was the only thing I cared about.
A/N: WOW! THIS took forever. Hope you liked it! Sorry, had to fit it into one chapter, and not counting this thing it was about 936 words! In case you were confused, I really think that inside, deep down, Burn is a kind dragon, consumed by her own greed. SORRY FOR KILLING OFF THESE TWO DRAGONS! Had to do it, in a way. And I really thought this was fun! If you have questions or comments, post them below! And keep in mind that this was for a contest for a friend. Can't mention your name, it won't let me! ACK, anyways, their user is mentioned in the description and go follow them! (WOW, time to end the story. 1057 words!)
