Chapter 28: Pegasi
Many of the gathered young witches and wizards marveled at the beautiful creature Professor Grubby-Plank was stroking lightly. The creature was a pure black stallion with large wings of the same color, beside him was another pegasus this one of a pure white. Both horses nickered a greeting to the students around them.
"Can anyone tell me what type of creatures these two are?" Professor Grubby-Plank asked the class. Immediately, hands shot up into the air as the wizards made connections to creatures they had only read about in books.
"Mr. Jackson?" Professor Grubby-Plank gestured to Percy who had his hand raised.
"They are pegasi, ma'am," Percy said confidently.
"Correct. Ten points to Hufflepuff. As some of you may know pegasi are rare within our world. Little to no accounts have been recorded on how to take care of them. Many assume they can be taken care of like regular nonmagical horses besides the need to stretch their wings occasionally.
I want you to get in small groups and be careful. While they might not be as volatile as the hippogriffs you have come in contact with we don't know how they will react. They seem pretty docile so we should have no problems if everyone keeps their wits about them. I want you to study them. Write down any behaviors you notice."
Percy, Thalia, and Nico looked at each other and came to a silent agreement. They settled down near where Hermione, Ron, and Harry had sat. Nico and Thalia were leaning against a tree while Percy wrote something down his face scrunched in concentration while he tried not to make a mistake. The two pegasi walked up to them and the black one nudged at Percy's shoulder. The raven laughed out loud and stroked the stallion's nose giving in to his silent demand.
"Hey, Blackjack," he said. "Hello, Porkpie." He gave the white one pets too. Later, Harry would wonder how the other boy knew their names, but it didn't occur to him that no one had given them names before.
The two pegasi seemed to shy away from Nico but felt no one way or another about Thalia. Many students watched the interaction and wrote down what they saw. Even Professor Grubby-Plank seemed confused.
"They seem quite fond of you, Mr. Jackson," Professor Grubby-Plank observed.
"What?" Percy questioned with confusion, looking up from where he had been absentmindedly stroking the two pegasi. "I guess they do."

Percy stopped in his tracks when he saw Blackjack and Porkpie standing next to Professor Grubby-Plank. As they walked closer the two pegasi seemed to grow more excited and calls of Blackjack's "Boss" and Porkpie's "Lord" floated through Percy's mind. Percy sent them back a mental hello and joined the circle of fifth years.
Some were clamoring excitedly at the sight, others were openly gaping. Percy just smiled fondly and started talking to them mentally. He did not want to look weird in front of mortals for talking to horses. Not the best way to keep a secret.
'Why are you here? You two are supposed to be at Camp,' Percy questioned mentally.
'It's boring without you, Boss.' Blackjack replied. 'Do you have any donuts?'
'What have I said about calling me Boss? And no I don't have any donuts.'
'But you're the boss, Boss.'
Percy sighed knowing it was a useless fight. He turned to Porkpie.
'Why did you let him do this?' Percy asked.
'He asked me if I wanted to go for a fly. I just followed him,' Porkpie responded, but Percy saw the slight amusement in the white pegasus's eyes.
Percy let out an even longer sigh, Thalia and Nico looked at him in barely concealed amusement. Smiles were prominent on their faces as their eyes twinkled with mirth. Despite not knowing of the conversation happening they knew the sigh. It was a sigh of fond exasperation. Percy would use it with some of the younger campers when they were being particularly cheeky.
When the professor was done explaining their assignment for the day the three demigods silently moved to sit down in the grass. Percy sat crosslegged hunching over a piece of parchment and trying to write down everything he knew about pegasi with as few spelling mistakes as possible. Blackjack walked up to him and nudged Percy on the shoulder in a silent demand.
Percy laughed slightly and gave his steed the pets he demanded, but was soon forced to put his quill down as Porkpie walked over and demanded the same attention. Percy leaned back slightly to get more comfortable he laid his legs out stretching them slightly. He loved giving attention to his horse friends just as much as they liked receiving the attention.
Percy zoned out and was startled out of his thoughts by Professor Grubby-Plank. He looked at her blearily for a second until her words registered completely.
"I guess they do," he replied to her after he let the words process.
"He's always had a way with horses," Thalia stepped in before he could say anymore. "They seem to love him. Never met a horse who hasn't. The people at our camp have called him The Horse Whisperer more than once."
Percy inclined his head; a lie hidden in the truth is the best way to lie sometimes.
'I'm bored, Boss,' Blackjack said, distracting Percy from the rest of the conversations going on around him.
'I'll come back later and we can go for a ride,' Percy told his pegasus.
'Can we get donuts?'
'What is it with you and donuts, hm?'
'They're good. Very tasty.' Percy rolled his eyes, but he had to concede to Blackjack's point.
'Fine,' he agreed eventually, 'But we have to bring some back for Mom, Thalia, and Nico which means no eating them all.'
Blackjack huffed slightly but agreed.

Percy can truly say he was not prepared for someone to catch him mounting Blackjack. It was the Ravenclaw from the train ride. Luna, Percy thinks her name was. Distantly, he wondered what she was doing in the Forbidden Forest but decided he wouldn't ask if she didn't ask what he was doing.
"Should you be doing that?" she asked.
Percy turned, startled, and ended up losing his grip on Blackjack. Since he was only halfway mounted it meant he fell off, onto his butt. The pegasus snorted in amusement and Percy glared lightly at him.
"Ass," he told his horse. Percy turned to Luna. "I'll be okay. It's perfectly safe. Most of the time." Percy mumbled the last part to himself remembering when he had landed painfully on Blackjack during the Titan War.
"If you say so," Luna said absentmindedly while she admired the pure black pegasus in front of her. "He's very handsome."
'Yes, I am,' Blackjack replied proudly, but it was only a snort of approval that Luna heard.
"Yes, very handsome," Percy agreed. Blackjack puffed out his chest which made Percy laugh lightly.
"Have fun," Luna told him, but instead of heading back to the castle, she went deeper into the forest. Percy shrugged to himself and mounted Blackjack fully this time before the pegasus took off into a canter and lifted off into the sky.
Percy whooped glad that he was in Zeus's domain and the god couldn't do anything about it since technically pegasi were his father's domain. However, pegasi were the only way he was allowed up in the air without fear of being shot down.
The demigod leaned down and held onto Blackjack's neck staying low against his body when he did a loopy loop in the clouds and steered Blackjack in a random direction hoping to find some form of mortal settlement instead of Hogsmeade which was filled with wizards and witches and had no donuts for some reason.
With Blackjack's speed, they reached a small town with a small donut shop (thankfully not a Monster Donut) in only about thirty minutes. Percy brought Blackjack down a few miles outside of the town. The son of Poseidon dismounted and Blackjack took off again, circling the skies until Percy was ready to go again.
Percy jogged most of the way to the small settlement only stopping once he was right outside the entrance. It was small but elegant. Houses were lined up neatly where Percy entered. Each had immaculate yards, only small differences in each. A rosebush here and a garden there.
The demigod attempted to find his way to the donut shop. It took asking two of the very few people who were walking the streets before he found it. Luckily, he had left early in the morning before even Hogwarts started serving breakfast. The line was short and it took no time at all before Percy had two boxes full of a dozen donuts each. He eventually decided on doing half regular glaze donuts and half chocolate glaze donuts.
Percy hoped it would last a couple of days but knew that Blackjack would probably eat as many as he could without feeling sick. Thalia would relish in the donuts since the Hunters rarely stayed in the city and when they did it was a one in a hundred chance of getting donuts at all. Nico would probably eat only one or two and his mom would eat only a couple as well. Percy was planning on getting at least three before stopping.
Getting to the clearing Blackjack had left Percy in, the demigod let out his best New York taxi cab whistle to tell Blackjack he was ready. The pegasus landed quickly and waited impatiently for his promised donuts. Percy gave him four regular glaze donuts before cutting him off from any more.
Percy had almost mounted again when a thought struck him. He hadn't thought about how he was going to keep the boxes from sliding off while Blackjack was flying. Whoops.
"No tricks, please," Percy told his steed. "I don't want to drop these and I forgot to ask for a bag."
'You got it, Boss.'
The return trip took less time than the previous trip because they both knew the direction they needed to get back to Hogwarts rather than the aimless wandering they had done looking for a donut shop. They landed back in the clearing just inside the Forbidden Forest's tree line and Percy dismounted before patting Blackjack on the neck and bidding him goodbye, but did not order him back to New York because something told him that both pegasi would be needed at some point and Percy had learned to trust his instincts.
Back inside the castle was quiet as it was early morning and very few -if any- students had left their common rooms yet. Percy walked to the Defense Against the Dark Arts corridor and knocked on his mom's office door. A faint "come in" carried to his ears and he let himself in.
"Hey, Perce," Sally said, looking up at her son. Her eyes fell on the boxes in his hands. "Whatcha got there?"
"Blackjack wanted donuts. I decided I'd get all of us some." Percy held up the boxes as Sally laughed.
"You spoil him too much."
"No, I don't."
"Yes, you do."
"I can take the donuts back and just share them with Thalia and Nico," Percy playfully threatened.
"No, you wouldn't."
"And why not?"
"Because I'm your mom and you love me."
"That's true. Here." Percy placed the boxes on her desk. "I'm going see if I can get Nico and Thalia. Be back in a minute."
"Okay," Sally called to her son's retreating form.
~~~
True to his word not even five minutes later both Thalia and Nico came bolting into the office with Percy right behind them.
"All I said was donuts and they pushed me out of the way to get here."
"You better not tell your fathers about that," Sally told them. "I bet they'd say it's unbecoming to act like that in public."
"Amphitrite would be the one to scold me. Dad would laugh it off," Percy replied. "On second thought. Never mentioning this. I don't want to sit through another lecture on public etiquette." Percy shivered at the thought.
Thalia swallowed the huge bite of a chocolate-glaze donut she had started eating to laugh. "Was it really that bad?" she asked.
"Yes. You weren't there. It was that bad."
Everyone ate their donuts and as Percy suspected Thalia realished in the rare treat. The boxes were left in Sally's office for later. The three demigods went to get changed since Percy had not wanted to wear his school robes while riding Blackjack, and both Nico and Thalia were just going to wait until the last minute before going to the Great Hall to change into their robes, but Percy had turned up with the promise of donuts and it turned into a free for all race (No powers of course.) to get to Sally's office first.
Why'd I do this? It's funny and sweet kind of. Some of the people I know would totally push me out of the way for donuts. Also, Sally and Percy have a good relationship and I have a good one with my parents so I kind of used banter that me and my parents use.
Percy at the beginning of the chapter is the commenter for this meme.
