Book One: Chapter Nine

We were stopped by guards as we neared the hall.

"I cannot allow you before King Theoden so armed, Gandalf Greyhame. By order of Grima Wormtongue." Gandalf nodded for us to turn over our weapons and we did.

"Your staff," Hama said to Gandalf.

"You would not part an old man from his walking stick." I'm glad I had a ring instead of a staff. Hama rolled his eyes at Gandalf before leading us into the hall. Gandalf winked at Aragorn and pretended to lean on Legolas as if an old man would. It was quite amusing, really.

"The courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late, Theoden king," Gandalf said and Wormtongue leaned over and whispered something into Theoden's ear.

"Why should I welcome you, Gandalf?" I took a step forward.

"Because he is the greatest wizard alive, far more powerful than any man or Saruman himself." Wormtongue ran to me, taking his fist and hitting me in the cheek. The blow had enough force to send me to the ground.

"You hit like a girl, Wormtongue. Do you want me to give you lessons?" He glared at me.

"A woman should know her place," he spat as I got up. I smirked at him, causing him to grow even more furious.

"I know my place. I don't think that you know where yours is." Wormtongue charged at me again but htis time, he flew backwards.

"What did you do?!" he shouted angrily. I shrugged my shoulders and looked back at the remaining fellowship. They were trying their best not to laugh, even Gandalf. Wormtongue gave me one last glare before turning to Gandalf.

"Late is the hour in which this conjurer chooses to appear. Lathspell I name him. Ill news is an ill guest."

"Be silent," Gandalf ordered. Wormtongue froze.

"Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm." Gandalf raised his staff.

"His staff. I told you to take the wizard's staff," Wormtongue hissed at Hama. The men came at us and we fought them. Taking them out easily, which was a shame. I enjoy fights sometimes. Gandalf grabbed my hand and pulled me with him towards Theoden.

"Theoden, son of Thengel, too long have you sat in the shadows. Harken to me! I release you from this spell." Gandalf held out his hand and concentrated. Nothing happened. Theoden began to laugh menacingly and Gandalf opened his eyes.

"Gandalf, I think you need to hit him over the head with you staff." Gandalf gave me a look that clearly said that my comment wasn't as funny as I thought it was.

"You have no power here, Gandalf the Grey." Gandalf threw open his cloak angrily and a blinding light issued from him. Theoden was thrown back against his seat. Gandalf turned to me with pleading eyes and I walked up beside him. Gnadalf thrust his staff towards Theoden at the same time that I put my hand out. Light emitted from it and I felt a wonderful sensation as the energy coarsed through my body. Theoden's aura began to change and I heard Saruman's voice.

"If I go, Theoden dies."

"You did not kill, you will not kill him," Gandalf replied. I turned my attention back to healing Theoden of the darkness that Saruman had filled him with.

"Rohan is mine," Theoden/Saruman said, trying to fight only my power since Gandalf was no longer using his magic.

"Be gone!" Gandalf commanded. Theoden moaned and fell from his throne as I crumpled to the ground in exhaustion. Legolas ran to my side.

"Are you okay?" I nodded and he helped me up, only to have me fall again.

"Legolas, I don't think I can stand without falling over." Without another word, he slid his arms under my legs and picked me up, holding me bride-style. Without meaning to, I fell asleep in his arms.

I felt something wet being pressed against my forehead and I sat up quickly. Sitting around me were Gimli, Legolas, Gandalf, and Aragorn.

"They are having a funeral for Theodred and the king wants you to sing there," Aragorn said. I nodded. I couldn't say no to a king. I walked beside Legolas with my head bowed. I felt very nervous and I could swear I was about to pass out. I can't sing since I will fail. We stood around Theodred's tomb as he was lowered down. King Theoden looked at me and I knew he wanted me to sing now. I cleared my throat and everyone turned their attention to me.

Of all the money that e'er I had

I've spent it in good company

And all the harm that e'er I've done

Alas it was to none but me

And all I've done for want of wit

To memory now I can't recall

So fill to me the parting glass

Good night and joy be with you all

Of all the comrades that e'er I had

They are sorry for my going away

And all the sweethearts that e'er I had

They would wish me one more day to stay

But since it falls unto my lot

That I should rise and you should not

I'll gently rise and I'll softly call

Good night and joy be with you all

A man may drink and not be drunk

A man may fight and not be slain

A man may court a pretty girl

And perhaps be welcomed back again

But since it has so ordered been

By a time to rise and a time to fall

Come fill to me the parting glass

Goodnight and joy be with you all

Goodnight and joy be with you all

I finished and Theoden gave me a silent thanks. We threw in our flowers and walked away. I ventured off on my own and became lost in thought. One of these days, we were all going to die, most likely painfully. Not even the most powerful wizards are invincible. We will all die at the hands of Saruman. I felt someone place their hand on my arm. I looked over and saw Legolas.

"Are you okay?" he asked me. I nodded.

"You know what I just realized?" He gave me a puzzled look before shaking his head no.

"We are all going to die. When Rohan falls there will be no hope left in the world." He grabbed my chin and forced me to look into his eyes.

"We are not going to die. Rohan will not fall," he said firmly before slowly bringing his lips to mine. Right before they had made contact, I heard someone cough. We spun around and saw Aragorn looking uncomfortably at us.

"Sorry to interrupt but we need you in the throne room."

*******

I walked into the throne room and saw two little kids. Eowyn ran up to me.

"the children are hurt. Do you think you could heal them?" I nodded and sat down beside the oldest.

"Where does it hurt?" She pointed to her arm which was bleeding. I placed my hand on it and it disappeared. I healed her sister next and then helped Eowyn serve them food.

"So what's your guys' names?"

"I'm Eothain and this is my sister Freda," Eothain said. Then she gave me a curious look.

"how did you heal us?" I leaned in closely and whispered,"I'm a wizard." They gave me an excited look.

"Can you show us a trick?" Freda asked. I nodded and snapped my fingers, causing a small flame to dance on my fingertips. The girls looked amazed. Then, Gandalf's voice cut across the hall.

"Stop playing around, Arietta. We need to discuss what to do next." I stood up and considered sticking my tongue out at him but decided against it.

"Isn't it obvious? You have to fight," I said matter-of-factly. Theoden gave me a wary look.

"My army is a good 300 leagues from here by now. I will not bring further death to my people."

"There is already war upon you. Death will surely come," I said firmly.

"Last time I looked, Theoden, not Arietta, was King of Rohan." That ticked me off a little.

"I suggest you make a wise decision soon or maybe Rohan should find a new king." Theoden glared at me and I glared back at him. We held our glares until Gandalf cut in.

"What is the king's decision?" Theoden turned away from us with concern etched on his face.
