4- Let's Not Do This
| Caleb |
The day I married her, everything seemed to fall into place. I had a wife, and a career, everything I worked for was worth it. I simply knew that she was for me. That moment when I first kissed her, that moment I seen her after five years at Liberty. I knew it.
I vowed for better or worse, and in sickness or in health. I plan to keep that. I'm not ever giving up on her, even if it means waiting until I take my last breath. She was worth everything I ever did.

Her mother stared at me with a dirty look as I entered the room. Her father had a sympathetic look, but looked more upset at his daughter than he did with me.
Her mom crossed her arms and huffed, "Why didn't you call us?"
"I'm so sorry, I've been focused on taking care of Juliet. I'm sorry." I apologized.
She rolled her eyes and scoffed, "It's your fault that she's here. That she's dying."
"She's not dying. She will not die." I stated.
"She's in a coma, Caleb!" She groaned, "A drunk driver."
"I know. As if I already don't feel bad about it. Our daughter doesn't even understand." I explained.
"Then maybe she needs to grow up and face the harsh realities of life." She muttered.
"Juliet's six. She's six years old. And I'm not giving up on Avery." I persisted.
"Just pull the plug. It's not like she's going to live." She stated angrily.
Avery's father looked at his wife in disgust. I scoffed, "Come on. She's your daughter. I get that you're upset and angry, but you can't give up on her."
"Did the doctors tell you the chance of survival for her? It's not good. A 75% chance that she'll die." She sighed.
"I know. Can we please not do this? She can hear us. I really don't want to fight anyway." I stated, trying to find peace.
"She can't hear us." Her mother groaned.
"I'm not giving up on her. I'm sorry, I'm not. She's my wife, and the mother of my child. I'm not fighting here, or anywhere." I sighed.
"Speaking of Juliet. Where is she?" She asked.
"At school." I answered.
She gritted her teeth, "She shouldn't be there. She should be here with her almost dead mother."
I took a deep breath, staying calm. "Will you please stop talking like that about her? Juliet is fine. She doesn't fully understand the situation. I feel best for her to be at school so she isn't in this room all day. To keep her mind occupied." I explained.
"Her mind should be with her mother." She exclaimed.
"Can we keep this down? We're not alone in this hospital." I asked.
"Why do you care so much about her?" She asked.
"She's my wife. She's everything I've ever wanted, and I love her." I answered.
She scoffed, "You're so full of it. You're no good for her."
"Shelly." Her father scolded.
"Did you know she was pregnant? We were having a baby, and we didn't know it. I regret letting her go out that night. I wished I stopped her, and she'd be at home and we'd still have our baby." I stated.
"She was pregnant?" He asked.
I sighed, "Yes. I didn't know until yesterday when I got here. It didn't make it."
"I'm so sorry, Caleb." Her father apologized.
I shrugged, "It's fine. She was about 5 weeks."
"Knock knock." A voice came from behind me. I smiled weakly as my little sister came into the room.
"Hey, Charis." I greeted.
"Hey," she whispered, hugging me. "Alan called me. I'm so sorry."
"It's fine." I muttered.
"What happened?" She asked.
"Drunk driver. She's in a coma." I answered.
"We're gonna go, Caleb. I'm sorry about today." Her father apologized.
"It's fine. We're all a little stressed." I shrugged.
He nodded and they left. Charis sighed and looked over at Avery. "Man. What's her condition?"
"Coma, head injury, fractured wrist and dislocated knee." I answered, "We lost the baby."
"She was pregnant?" She asked.
"Yeah. The only who know are you, her parents and the three guys. I didn't even know until the other night." I sighed.
"How is Juliet taking it?" She questioned.
"Honestly, inside her head, I'm not sure. I don't think she fully understands. She just thinks Avery's sleeping. I didn't know how to explain it to my six year old kid." I explained.
"Hey, you're doing the best you can. You're still trying to wrap this around your head, and with a child, that has to be hard." She reassured, "You're doing pretty great in this situation, if you ask me."
"Thanks." I muttered.
"It's fine. I'm pick up Juliet from school. Is that okay?" She asked.
I nodded, "Yeah. She'll be happy to see you."
"I'll be back." She mumbled. I nodded as she left.
I kneeled at Avery's bedside, taking her hand. I gently pressed her cold hand against my lips. I sighed, "It's only day two, but I miss you. Juliet misses you. She was asking about you last night, wondering why you weren't home. And I'm sorry about arguing with your parents. Your mom doesn't have faith in you, the doctors, or God. He's gonna take care you. And as soon as you're outta here, I'm taking you on a weekend trip. Me and you, and Juliet. Just us, because this made me realize something. I can't lose you, baby. I won't lose you. I'm not giving up, I said that the day we got married. I love you, baby."
"Daddy!" Juliet squealed.
I smiled weakly, "Hey, babygirl."
She ran to me and engulfed me in hug, wrapping her arms around my neck. Charis smiled and leaned against the doorway. "She's definitely a daddy's girl."
I smirked, "Like you."
She laughed, "That's just because she has an awesome aunt."
"That's partly true." I snickered.
"Daddy, is momma alive?" Juliet asked.
I looked up at Charis, her eyes were wide and she shrugged. "Baby, what made you ask that?"
"I told my teacher that I was tired, because we were here with momma. She said momma might not be here." She explained.
I bit at the inside of my cheek, trying to keep my anger in. How can you just a little girl that her mom might die? Why does no one have faith in Avery?
"Baby, momma is just hurt and is sleeping so she can get better. She'll wake up soon, she's alive. Okay?" I stated.
She nodded, "Okay daddy."
"Momma's gonna be just fine, baby. I promise." I whispered.
