1- I Never Thought This
| Caleb |
I never thought that in an instant my whole world would change for the worse. It happened before, but for the better, when my little girl, Juliet, was born.
I never thought that I'd be praying as hard as I could. Trying to stay happy and positive for my daughter, when in reality, I was breaking. I was slowly dying, crumbling to bits. I kept together, I had my daughter to take care of, and my career. If it wasn't for those two things keeping me together, I would have been broken ages ago.

I kissed my wife goodbye as she left. It was going to be night in with my daughter. Avery, my wife, was going out with her friends.
I sat down with Juliet as she resumed the movie, Tangled. She snuggled into my side as I threw my arm around her body.
Literally within minutes, Juliet was asleep. I turned off the movie, and stood up before carefully picking up my daughter.
I carried her to room, laying her in bed. I tucked her, and smoothed down her hair before kissing her forehead. "Goodnight, babygirl." I whispered.
I quietly got up and shut off her light, and shutting her door.
The house was silent as I walked back to the living room. I took out Tangled and put it into the proper case.
I grabbed the controller to the PS4, and turned on the console. I sat back down onto the couch and pulled up Netfilx. Only watching my favorite show, Friends.
I was woken by someone banging on my front door. I noticed my phone face down on the couch. I quickly picked it up, checking the time. It was 1 in the morning! What gives?!
I groaned, but got up to answer the door anyway. However, I was met with two police officers.
"Is this the home of Avery Grimm?" One of them asked.
I nodded, "Yeah. I'm her husband. What's this about?"
The other guy stayed quiet. The first one eyed me and sighed, "She's been in an accident involving a drunk driver."
"W-Where is she? Is she okay?" I questioned.
"I'm not completely sure. All we know is that she's being taken care of at Saint Thomas Hospital." He answered.
My heart sank. I cleared my throat, "H-How's the other guy?"
"He was dead on arrival. Your wife was unconscious when the first responders arrived. Would like to escorted to the hospital?" He asked.
I shook my head, "I-uh, no. I have to get my, uh, daughter. But thank you."
He gave a slight smile, "It's not a problem. We'll let you be now."
I nodded, "Thank you."
They simply turned around and left. I shut the door and leaned back against it. I was still trying to wrap my mind around the fact.
My love was in an accident and the other driver died. It only made me wonder about my wife's condition. I didn't want her to leave me and Juliet. I didn't want to raise our daughter by myself.
I sighed and shook my head. I made my way towards Juliet's room. I opened her door and she was sleeping quietly. I went over and kneeled in front of her bed.
I gently shook her, "Juliet, wake up baby."
She groaned and sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Daddy?"
"Yeah. It's me babygirl. We gotta go somewhere." I stated.
"Where?" She asked.
"Just somewhere. You can keep your pjs on, but go brush your teeth and put on your shoes. Okay?" I answered.
"Okay." She nodded.
I smiled slightly, "Thank you."
I kissed her forehead and got up. She did the same and left the room with me. She went one way, and I went to my room.
I shut my door quickly, and went to the bathroom connected to my room. I brushed my teeth, and went back into my room. I grabbed my black and white sneakers and laced them.
I walked back out to the livingroom, where Juliet was waiting patiently.
She smiled brightly at me, "I'm ready daddy."
"I see that, babygirl. Come on. We have to go." I stated weakly.
"Where's momma? Is she going with us?" Juliet asked.
"We'll see her. I promise." I mumbled, biting my lip.
I grabbed my phone and keys, then Juliet's hand. She followed me out to the car, and I buckled her in her carseat. I climbed in and drove.
I carried my sleeping daughter on my hip as I walked through the ER. I didn't know where else to go. I got to the desk and a nurse smiled warmly at me, "May I help you?"
"I'm, uh, looking for an Avery Grimm. She's my wife, she was in an accident." I stated.
I stood there and bit my lip, while the nurse typed away on her computer. "Avery Grimm?" She asked.
"Yes." I answered, "G-R-I-M-M."
"A-ha! I got it. She's up in the ICU." She nodded.
"Can you tell me where that is?" I questioned.
She smiled softly, "Okay. You want to go to the main lobby, and ask for the ICU building. Then ask the nurses there. Okay, sweetheart?"
"Yeah. Thank you." I smiled weakly.
Within minutes, I was being directed once again. Then showed the room where my wife was. I was shocked as my eyes landed on my wife, bloodied and beaten-looking.
The doctor turned and looked at me, "I'm sorry, no vistors, only family."
"I-I'm her husband." I stuttered out.
He sighed, "Then you may stay. Have you been told about her condition?"
I shook my head, "No."
"She's currently in a coma," he started. There again, my heart sunk. "Severe head trauma, a fractured wrist and a dislocated knee. And one more thing. Were you aware she was pregnant?"
I stared at him blankly. "S-She was pregnant?" I gaped.
"Yes sir." He nodded, "And no. The baby didn't make it."
"I, uh, didn't know." I muttered.
"I'm sorry, we also don't know if she'll survive. It'll take a giant miracle for her to live and walk away from this. I'm sorry, Mr. Grimm." He sighed and left the room.
My heart had just officially been broken into two. My wife was fighting for her life, and I lost a baby I didn't know I had.
