"We're glad you decided to come in, Mr. King." Lysander's doctor, Dr. Poe told him.
"Is everything alright, doc?" Lysander wondered. Halia squeezed his hand. They were both incredibly nervous.
"I'm afraid not. We've run all our tests and it appears that you have a rare, recently discovered disease. Very little is known about it, but it hasn't claimed any lives yet."
"Yet? As in it could?" Halia asked, worried.
"I'm afraid so, Mrs. King."
"We're just friends." Lysander mumbled.
Halia was too busy thinking about the problem at hand to correct Dr. Poe. Lysander could die.
"Is there anything you can do to treat him? There's got to be something you can do!" Halia stated.
"Very little is known, but we are working on an experimental procedure that might be able to stop it. Until then I suggest weekly doctor visits to check on if you're improving or not."
"Well, that went well." Lysander said walking out of the doctor's office.
"Ly, take this seriously! You could die." Halia blurted out, terrified of losing her best friend. A flash of pain crossed Lysander's face. Halia immediately realized her mistake. "Sorry, Ly, you're probably more terrified than I am. It's just," Tears began welling up in her eyes. "I can't loose you."
Lysander pulled Halia into a hug. There was suddenly a weakness in his eyes that hadn't been there before.
If he died his family would be broken.
Halia already was struggling to cope with the idea. She had struggled with her emotions all her life.
This could break her.
He couldn't do that. He couldn't break the heart of the girl he loved.
"Halia," He whispered in her ear as she calmed down. "You're stuck with me. I'm not going anywhere."
Halia forced a smile. Nobody had died yet. And there wasn't any proof that anyone would.
He'd be fine. He had to be.
