The sun was surprisingly bright that day. The college campus bustled with life as Halia rushed across. She was late to her first psychology class.
"Sh¡t, sh¡t, sh¡t!" She exclaimed as she rushed down the halls. She had overslept. Her hair was a tousled blonde mess and her clothes were wrinkled.
She gathered up some courage to brave the embarrassment she would face in front of her teacher and classmates and pushed open the classroom's door.
Thirty pairs of eyes turned to stare at her.
A wrinkled Asian man frowned upon seeing her, but continued with the lesson. It was his job to teach after all.
Halia blushed and immediately sat down at the closest open space.
"Sorry is anyone sitting there?" Halia wondered a young man about her age sitting next to the seat she had chosen.
He had messy, dark brown hair that stuck up and green-blue eyes. He smiled at her.
"Nope!" He said, popping the p.
"Oh well thanks!" Halia told him.
"You're welcome. I'm Lysander by the way." He told her.
"Halia, Halia Aisling." She whispered back.
The teacher seemed to drone on about what to expect from the class. Eventually it ended.
"So... Halia, right?" Halia nodded. "What do you want to do?" Lysander wondered as the exited the classroom.
"I'd like my profession to be a therapist." Halia admitted. "I know it's a little weird, but-"
"I don't think it's weird." Lysander interrupted.
"Oh," Halia's face broke into a smile. "What about you?"
"I'd like to be a writer, but until I actually finished anything I plan on going to school to get a teaching degree." Lysander told her.
"Ooh what do you have so far?" Halia wondered, referring to his writing.
Lysander shrugged. "Not much."
"I've been told I'm great with constructive criticism." Halia winked.
Lysander's face turned red and he let out a bark of laughter. "We just met. You're going to have to get to know me better before I let you read my works."
"Darn!" Halia snapped her fingers. Her tone was joking.
"Speaking of getting to know one better, how would you like to hang out later? I'm a freshman so I don't really have any friends yet, besides my roommate." Lysander suggested.
Halia thought about his offer from a moment, before she nodded.
"Sure that'd be nice. I'm a freshman too and I don't know anyone."
"Cool, so my friend and I are going to be at Marty's at six. I'll see you later."
"Yep! See you! I've got to get to my next class."
At six she found herself in Marty's Smoothie Shack. She scanned the room looking for Lysander and found him and another freshman sitting at a table. The other freshman, she assumed, was his roommate. He had light brown hair, a bit of stubble, and an overall happy-go-lucky attitude to him. She walked over.
"Hey, Halia! Aiden, this is Halia from my Psych class. Halia, this is Aiden my roommate." Lysander introduced.
Halia held out her hand and Aiden took it, before winking flirtatiously at her.
"It's nice to meet you." Aiden said.
"I'm not sure I can say the same thing." The words just fell out of Halia's mouth. She hated flirts.
Aiden looked shocked, but Lysander burst out laughing. It was only a second before a smile crept onto Aiden's face.
"Okay she's pretty cool." He admitted.
Halia beamed.
They spent the rest of the night hanging out, playing video games in Marty's arcade and drinking smoothies. At one point Halia dared Aiden to flirt with a red haired girl across the room and he got a soda poured on him. Lysander and Halia decided never to let him live that down.
These two were alright. Maybe for once her life was actually going well. For once she could actually have some friends.
It was the start of an amazing friendship.
